forming a rock band, showcasing their dreams and challenges in rural life. Village Rockstars was India’s
official entry to Oscars in 2019. "Bulbul Can Sing" (2018) tackles family dynamics and societal pressures
through a young woman's quest for freedom. Das's debut feature, "Man with the Binoculars:
Antardrishti" (2016), explores loneliness and longing, while her recent film, "Tora's Husband" (2022),
delves into themes of masculinity and societal expectations. These are just a few examples of Das's
impactful storytelling, highlighting the lives of Northeast India and establishing her as a leading voice
in independent cinema.
Project Objectives
After discussion with Flying River Films (henceforth, FRF), the major problems were identified in the
areas of brand outreach, awareness, and funding for FRF. These problem areas were captured in 4
major buckets as listed below:

1. Increase Brand Awareness: Make Flying River Films more recognizable among film
enthusiasts, social justice advocates, and relevant communities.

2. Boost Engagement: Create a more interactive online presence that encourages conversation
and community building.

3. Drive Traffic to Films and Website: Direct potential viewers to watch their films and learn more
about their work.

4. Secure Funding and Collaboration: Build relationships with potential co-producers,

distributors, and sponsors to increase funding opportunities and broaden reach.

Target Audience
We have divided the audience for the niche and independent movies into 3 major categories:
• Independent Cinema Enthusiasts: Fans of independent Indian cinema, particularly those
interested in regional stories and diverse voices.

• Socially Conscious Individuals: People interested in social issues explored in Flying Rivers'
films, such as gender equality, youth empowerment, and cultural identity.

• Vernacular Urban Cinephiles: This primarily includes the people of Northeast and other
regions of India with an interest in regional cultures, stories and can afford streaming platforms
to consume such content.

Transmedia promotional strategy

One of our core learning from the course is the techniques of transmedia marketing by involving
fans/viewers as a core part of the promotional narratives across platforms while theme remains the
key storyline of the movie.
Flying Rivers content portfolio is predominantly independent films with no continuing story lines and
built-up fan following (like that of Hunger Games or Harry Potter). However, each movie revolves
around Northeast culture and social issues, with a touch of artistic cinema. Transmedia promotional
strategy can be leveraged by catering to the defined target audience with a touch of the key storyline
of a particular movie.

For any movie, Flying Rivers can work with marketers on transmedia strategy by delving into necessary
core information on the storyline. We have attempted to illustrate a transmedia strategy for Flying
Rivers’ most acclaimed work “Village Rockstars.”
Village Rockstars

Figure 1 Landing page of Village Rockstars on Netflix

The story
of Village Rockstars is set in rural Assam where a single mother fights to raise her two children. The
elder son wrestles with school, while his curious younger sister finds an escape in music. United by a
wild dream of forming a rock band with other village kids, their makeshift instruments become a
symbol of hope. The film delves into the beauty and struggles of their life, showcasing the mother's
unwavering strength and the girl's innocence against the backdrop of poverty. It's a story of family,
resilience, and chasing dreams in a challenging world.

Crafting transmedia promotional strategy for Village Rockstars

1. What is my brand story?
Tweaking this to align with the film’s storyline.
“An open and impactful take on life in rural assam focused on girl-child empowerment and
progressive thinking.”
2. Who is my audience?
Defined earlier as key audience of Flying Rivers. Additionally, the target audience has access
to internet and independent film content, leading a majorly urban lifestyle.
3. What story should I tell them?
Storytelling focused on the following themes like
- Rural, agriculture focused lifestyle
- Girl-child empowerment
- Quest for art/music production
- Northeast states’ culture and way of life
4. What digital and physical platforms should we use
Existing currently with Flying Rivers: Website, Instagram Profile, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube
Additional platforms required: Regional television.
5. How does the story unfold across platforms with audience participation?

We propose certain initiatives to carry out transmedia promotional campaign for ‘Flying Rivers’ with
emphasis on user generated content and audience participation.

Constraints for transmedia promotions:

• Independent films do not have an established fan following.

• Excessive reliance on the personal brand of director and producer, Rima Das
• Need to delve the right bits of storyline and overall theme.

Improving Presence
The media and entertainment industry is undergoing a period of unprecedented transformation. The
rise of streaming giants, evolving audience preferences, and technological advancements are forcing
film studios to improve presence across the board. In this dynamic environment, Flying River Films,
like all studios, must carefully consider its approach to media creation and distribution to remain
competitive.
The improvement of brand presence is analysed below in 3 major parts:

• Content Strategy
o Existing Content Strategy
o New Content Strategy
• Platform Optimisation
• Community Building
Content Strategy
In the ever-competitive world of film, a captivating content strategy is the lifeblood of audience
engagement. This analysis delves deep into Flying River Films' current approach, dissecting its
strengths and weaknesses. We'll explore how effectively the studio utilizes various content formats,
engages with target audiences, and builds anticipation for upcoming releases. By identifying areas for
improvement and drawing inspiration from industry leaders, we'll craft a roadmap for a content
strategy that soars, propelling Flying River Films to new heights of success.

Existing Content Strategy

This segment analyses Flying River Films' current content strategy and proposes improvements. By
leveraging the principles of strategic management and understanding the specific challenges and
opportunities facing the film industry, we can identify ways for Flying River Films to thrive in this
evolving landscape.
• Develop a Consistent Brand Voice: Rima Das and her reputation is only brand associated with
Flying River Films. She would need to define a unique voice that reflects Flying River Films'
values and resonates with the target audience. This could include her attempts to teach, shape
or educate niche and regional directors from the indie industry.

Figure 2 Examples of Rima Das's attempt to influence niche indie industry

• Create Diverse Content: There is a need to create buzz about existing and past projects
through different projects. This can be done by mixing short film clips, behind-the-scenes
glimpses, interviews, social impact stories, & audience interaction prompts.

Figure 3 Behind the shots for Village Rockstars movie shared with audience

• Utilize Relevant Hashtags: As per discussion with Rima Das’s team, there is no quantifiable
analysis of hashtags used in social media. There is a need to employ targeted hashtags to
reach new audiences interested in film, social issues, and independent cinema.

Figure 4 Sample hashtags used by FRF

• Leverage Storytelling: Currently, only still images or posters are being shared by FRF. There is
a need to share captivating narratives about the films, their impact, and the communities they
represent. One sample as shown below is Rima’s interview snippets where she talks about the
need for diversity and inclusivity with leading directors of Bollywood. This elevates both her
and FRF’s branding across the board.

New Content Strategy

In this, we try to analyse how FRF can come out with newer content for her own targeted audience.
We have applied the Content Creation Framework for Independent Directors Framework for this
analysis.

Figure 6 Framework for Independent Director Films

• Originality - Have similar films been made? Flying River Films prioritizes originality. They
breathe fresh air into familiar themes by reimagining classics or subverting genres. Untapped
stories are their focus, amplifying underrepresented voices (like "Tumbaad") and delving into
local narratives. Artistic exploration can be encouraged, with magical realism and non-linear
storytelling finding a home in their productions. This dedication to originality ensures their
films are impactful and linger with audiences.

• Feasibility - Possible to produce given budget limitations? Recognizing budget constraints as

a reality in the independent film scene, Flying River Films embraces resourcefulness to bring
their stories to life. They prioritize smaller-scale narratives, allowing them to focus on strong
character development and impactful storytelling without requiring extensive sets or large
casts. Creative solutions like embracing improvisation and minimalist aesthetics further their
reach. Additionally, exploring alternative formats like short films or web series will grant them
greater flexibility and a lower barrier to entry. To bridge any remaining funding gaps, Flying
River Films can actively pursue grants, awards, and even crowdfunding opportunities. This
multi-pronged approach ensures they create compelling content while staying within realistic
budgetary limitations.

• Drama - Will story resonate emotionally? At the heart of Flying River Films lies a commitment
to creating deeply emotional experiences for their audience. They weave universal themes of
love, loss, hope, and overcoming challenges into their narratives, ensuring a connection that
transcends cultural boundaries. This impact can be further amplified by the relatable
characters they craft - individuals with flaws and desires that mirror our own. Flying River Films
should not shy away from employing powerful visuals and music to heighten emotions, adding
layers of anticipation and suspense that keep viewers engaged. They can further enrich their
stories by drawing inspiration from the real-life experiences of Assam and Northeast India.
Showcasing local culture and traditions within their narratives fosters a sense of authenticity
and personal connection for a wider audience. This dedication to touching hearts through
emotionally resonant narratives is a cornerstone of Flying River Films' philosophy.

• Responsibility- Does film enrich our lives? Flying River Films understands film's potential to
do more than entertain. They weave social issues like poverty or mental health into narratives,
sparking conversations and raising awareness. Furthermore, they celebrate cultural richness
by showcasing traditions of Assam and Mumbai, fostering understanding. Finally, their films
explore personal growth through relatable stories of self-discovery and resilience, inspiring
audiences. This commitment to social responsibility, cultural exploration, and personal growth
elevates their content beyond mere entertainment.

• Interest- Does the story grab attention? Capturing audience interest is key for Flying River
Films. They weave local elements into established genres, offering fresh takes on familiar
themes. Effective promotion through social media, film festivals, and collaborations with other
filmmakers and organizations further ensures their stories reach a wider audience and leave a
lasting impact.

• Screenplay Potential- Script sustain feature film? When assessing potential scripts, Flying
River Films prioritizes depth and complexity. They seek layered concepts that offer fertile
ground for exploration and development throughout the film. Subplots and character arcs are
crucial elements, which will enrich the overall narrative tapestry and creating a more engaging
cinematic experience. Linear narratives, lacking intrigue or opportunities for expansion, are
avoided in favor of richer stories that can unfold naturally over a feature film's length. This
focus on well-developed concepts ensures their films have the potential to captivate audiences
for the full run time.
• Personal Choice- Theater-worthy film? Flying River Films thrives at the intersection of passion
and audience engagement. Their films are driven by the filmmakers' artistic fire, evident in
every frame. However, they understand the importance of connecting with viewers. Universal
themes are explored, but with a unique twist or a local lens for a fresh perspective. Diversity
is championed, broadening their thematic range and attracting a wider audience. This balance
ensures their films resonate on a personal level while captivating audiences on the big screen.

• Richness and Complexity- Repeat viewing adds depth? Flying River Films transcends a one-
time watch. They craft layered narratives with subtle details, foreshadowing, and nuanced
characters who unfold over time. Symbolic depth through visuals, recurring themes, and
character motivations adds further meaning. Open-ended questions spark discussions and
invite repeat viewings, rewarding audiences with a richer understanding with each encounter.
This commitment to complexity ensures their films stay with you long after the credits roll.

• Timeliness- Timeless concept? Flying River Films prioritizes creating timeless stories. They
explore universal struggles and aspirations, like love, loss, and self-discovery. Current issues
are integrated organically, avoiding fleeting trends. Their focus lies on characters and their
enduring connections, ensuring the story's core resonates for years to come.

• Critical Response-Best/Worst Review Potential? Anticipating critical reception is a key part of

filmmaking for Flying River Films. They strive for strong narratives that garner praise for their
originality and emotional impact. However, they also realistically acknowledge potential
shortcomings like predictability or technical limitations. To mitigate any potential criticism,
their focus remains steadfast on compelling storytelling, professional production values, and
creating content that resonates deeply with audiences.

Platform Optimization:
To gain a greater mind share, platform optimisation is a crucial step. Currently Flying Rivers has a
social media presence in the following ways:

be brought in through AMAs, chat forums and on set tours. Interaction videos with audience can also
be posted to enhance relatability.

Key Learnings
The media and entertainment industry pulsates with creativity, but navigating its ever-changing
landscape requires a keen strategic mind. As audience preferences evolve and technology disrupts
traditional models, the key to success lies in continuous learning and adaptation. This exploration of
strategic management principles has equipped us with essential tools to thrive in this dynamic
environment. We'll delved into crucial areas like mastering content creation, analyzing market trends,
and fostering innovative leadership styles. By gleaning these key learnings, we gained the confidence
to navigate the exciting complexities of the media and entertainment industry. In this segment, we try
to summarise our key learnings from the course from the different case studies, guest lecture, and
discussion sessions in the classroom.
1. Ride the Disruption Wave (Disney, Disruption in Movie Making)
The business world is constantly in flux, and the challenge lies in understanding how digitalization and
evolving consumer behaviour are disrupting entire industries. Take Disney case study for example, a
company that has long dominated movie making. Now, they face the disruption of streaming services
that are fundamentally changing how people watch movies. The solution to staying ahead of the curve
lies in adaptation. By making strategic decisions, like Disney's strong focus on building its own
streaming platform, companies can leverage innovation to not just survive disruption, but to thrive in
the new landscape.
2. Content is King (Marvel)
The key to captivating audiences and building a powerful brand lies in mastering the art of content
creation. Think of Marvel, whose success hinges on crafting compelling stories with rich characters and
worlds. But content alone isn't enough. To truly engage the audience, we need to leverage the power
of storytelling across various platforms. This means utilizing digital and social media to create
interactive experiences, fostering a sense of community, and fostering two-way communication. By
mastering both captivating content and audience engagement techniques, we can build a strong brand
that resonates deeply with our target audience.
3. Business Model Evolution (Saregama)
In today's dynamic business environment, simply understanding the various models at play isn't
enough. Companies need to be adept at analysis – like Saregama India, a music label that thrived in
the physical media era. With the rise of music streaming, they faced a critical challenge. Here's where
the power of innovation comes in. By analyzing the new landscape and consumer behavior, Saregama
adapted. They didn't resist streaming, but instead embraced it, licensing their vast music library to
streaming platforms. This innovative approach allowed them to stay competitive and even thrive in
the digital age. Analyzing existing models and fostering a culture of innovation are crucial for
companies to not only survive disruption but also emerge stronger.
4. Lead Like a Director (Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani)
The world of film production is a whirlwind of creativity, collaboration, and tight deadlines. To navigate
these complexities, leaders need to uncover the most effective styles for managing creative teams.
Successful Indian filmmakers like Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani with their leadership styles
encompass a blend of visionary inspiration and a deep understanding of their teams. By applying the
lessons learned from such leaders, aspiring film producers can develop their own approach. This might
involve fostering a clear vision for the project while still allowing space for creative input from their
teams. Effective leadership in film production is all about striking a balance between guidance and
empowerment, ensuring everyone is working towards a shared goal while nurturing the artistic spirit
that brings the project to life.
5. Think Globally, Act Locally (Passion of Christ)
In a globalized world, understanding how strategies and challenges differ across regions is crucial. A
film like "The Passion of Christ" offers a prime example. While it resonated deeply with some
audiences, it faced criticism in others due to cultural sensitivities. This highlights the importance of
comparison – gaining insights into different markets and their unique needs. The key lies in adaptation.
By learning how successful companies navigate global trends, we can find ways to cater to specific
regional preferences. This might involve tailoring marketing campaigns, adapting product features, or
even developing entirely new offerings for markets. By embracing both comparison and adaptation,
we can ensure our message resonates globally while still respecting local sensibilities.
6. Make Informed Decisions (Hunger Games)
Let's look at the power of analysis and informed decision-making. Imagine the world before the
phenomenon of "The Hunger Games." To successfully launch a new book series, publishers need to be
masters of analysis. They must dissect the competition, understand current market trends for young
adult fiction, and assess their own internal capabilities – do they have the marketing muscle and
distribution network to support a potentially groundbreaking series? By thoroughly analyzing these
factors, publishers can make informed decisions. In the case of "The Hunger Games," the analysis likely
revealed a gap in the market for a dystopian story with a strong female lead. This insight, coupled with
a strong belief in the story's potential, probably fueled the decision to take a chance on the series. This
example highlights the importance of both analysis and informed decision-making. By carefully
dissecting the business landscape, companies can make strategic choices that lead to success.

success in the ever-evolving media and entertainment landscape. We navigated key challenges like
digital disruption and shifting consumer behaviour, advocating for adaptation through strategic
