The challenge is not merely describing an object, place, or event but doing so in a way that captivates
the reader's imagination and leaves a lasting impression.

Ian van Eyck Essay
Jan van Eyck was a master in style and symbolism, establishing a firm superiority in
glaze technique and delicately and elaborately applying subtle, yet powerful religious
references to what at first glance may seem simple portraits.
Van Eyck s drawing, Saint Barbara, completed in 1437, is an example of the artist s use
of fictional exotic or Romanesque style structures, suggestive of those from the Old
Testament. (p.99 textbook) Other symbolism includes the walled city that resembles a
ziggurat, and on the church, the three windows on the second level, feature the Trinity,
the symbolism of their octagonal structure, and baptism.

Mary is seen on multiple levels of the church.
Technically, Van Eyckwas ingenious in his use of glazing. He would apply several
coats of glazes with pigments in linseed oil, one over the other, and his final coats of
varnish allowing him to build up an enamel like surface that had the depth and
translucency of precious gems. (p.100 textbook) In Madonna in the Church, Van Eyck
uses small and intricate details as well as his color and light techniques to blend form
and symbol.
The Arolfini Wedding Portrait of 1434, a tiny piece representing the marriage of a
young, well off couple, is rich in both religious symbolism and technical skill. The artist
placed a certain emphasis on the use of disguised religious symbolism to play up this
civil ceremony as a sacrament of the church.
Among the many symbolic references in this work, Van Eyck alluded to the
representation of hollowed ground by having the subjects remove their shoes and cover
their heads. The shiny, clean mirror and crystalline beads depict the purity of the bride,
while the single candle in the chandelier can represent the presence of Christ at the
ceremony. The statuette of Saint Margaret can be seen as a reference to the woman s
role as wife and mother, and the clothing colors (green, blue, and white) are Late Gothic
symbols of the affection of a lover, faithfulness, and purity.
Rocky Statue Of Philadelphia Analysis
The Face of Philadelphia; an Analysis on the Effects of the Rocky Statue The Rocky
statue in Philadelphia, PA serves as an iconic symbol that has shaped the image of
Philadelphia, while demonstrating that location influences the way people see art. The
statue stands tall next to the Rocky Stairs, and plants into the minds of the people ideas
of inspiration, self determination, and pride in accomplishment, which all help raise
Philadelphiaup as a proud and progressing city. It s presence at the art museum also
demonstrates the effects of location on a piece of art. Location works like a
manipulation in that it influences the way people see the artwork. Would People look at

The part about the Rocky statue that makes it so universal is that it represents the tale
of an underdog. This underdog tale not only relates to Philadelphians, but it inspires
people everywhere. An interview was conducted where boxers were asked to talk
about Rocky s impact on Philadelphia. Justin Sargus, a boxer in Philadelphia says The
impact it has had on fighters, and what they think they can do, and endure, and the
way they go about training and style is certainly still felt today. A world championship
is a possibility, based from being a relative unknown . (Dinero 1) The statue gives
Philadelphia something monumental to stand on and something to represent all the
hardship the city has been through. The Rocky character also embraces the culture,
and lifestyle of a true Philadelphian. He eats at the same restaurants, runs through the
same streets, and speaks like a Philadelphia. This gives the statue a personal
connection to the people of the city, one they can claim as their own. The places and
stores seen in the movie are very popular tourist attractions in the city. Zeke Ferguson
from Di Brunos Bros, a popular site from the movie says It is an iconic story of an
underdog which I think all Philadelphians have been at, at one time or another, and it
shows you can succeed in the face of overwhelming odds (Dinero 1) The city is filled
with an enormous amount of diversity and just as the city and its people have been
through hard times, so has Rocky. The statue also appeals to people worldwide not
only because of its iconic underdog story, but because of its ability to appeal on a
personal level. Whenever failure is upon someone, Rocky inspires them to come back
strong because if you work hard you can achieve your goals. Justin Sargus says The thing
about the Rocky movies is that they make it seem like you can take an enormous amount

Intelligence Correlations Between Brothers Decrease With Increasing Age Difference
Topic Background/Introduction
In this article, the researchers is the study how the age difference between brothers affect
the correlation between their intelligence test scores. They describe how there has not
been much research on the effect of age difference between siblings (specifically
brothers) on intelligence. There have been many other studies that have shown that while
both genes and differences in one s environment may create differences between people,
familial similarities are caused mostly by shared genes (SSS. Studies using participants
that were adopted show that intelligences seems to vary with age. For instance, the
correlation between the intelligence test scores of young children who are not related is
much higher than that of the same children during adolescence. Other studies, using
twins, suggest that shared environmental effects are present in childhood and early
adulthood, but are absent in late adulthood. The researchers mention that studying
adopted children, who are usually brought into affluent and well functioning? Homes,
show that they are not representative of the entire population. There are many more
factors, when studying adopted siblings, and identical/fraternal twins that can lead to an
overestimation or underestimation of the effects of either the shared environment or
familial genetics. The researchers suggest that new data in needed to solve
Analysis of Zoot Suit Essay
The book Zoot Suit has symbolic significance for Mexican Americans and tells about
the riots during World War II. The Sleepy Lagoon Murder was one step in the fight for
the rights and respect of Mexican American s. This riot involved young servicemen and
civilians who clashed in the streets of the city with young Mexican Americans who wore
the noticeable quot;Zoot Suit. quot; At their height, the riots involved several thousand
men and women. In the end no one was killed and only a few were injured but even
today, the Zoot Suit riotsare remembered for their significance.

Throughout the play there are underlying theme that suggest different ideas. The themes

The Zoot Suit represents a changing society that the general population isn t ready to
accept it so they blame the crimes and the murders on those who dare to vary from
quot;normal. quot; This is going on during World War II and many of the Mexican
Americans feel like they have no place fighting the war and that the real war is the war
between soldiers with their tight button up collars and the hang loose Zoot Suiters who
are mostly Mexican American.

Pachuco asked Henry, quot;Off to fight for your country? quot; (p. 30) Henry replies,
quot; Why not? quot; (p. 30) Pachuco then states, quot;Because this ain t your country.
Look what s happening all around you. The Japs have sewed up the Pacific. Rommel
is kicking ass in Egypt but the Mayor of L.A. has declared an all out war on Chicanos.
On you! quot; (p. 30) This quote brings up the issue relating to whether WWII should
be fought by Mexican Americans or not. Pachuco, in this scene, seems to feel that it isn
t a war to be fought by the Mexican American but it is a time to begin a war to gain
respect for this culture.

Pachuco says, quot; The city s cracking down on pachucos, carnal. Don t you read the
newspapers? They re screaming for blood. quot; (p. 29) This quote implies that the
press is exaggerating the stories it tells in order to sell more papers. The press may have
contributed to the Zoot Suit Riot with their influence on public beliefs. He refers to the

Website Analysis Paper
INTRODUCTION
The level of usability of a website is determined by how simple it is for a visitor to use
and explore a website (Stokes, 2013, p. 95). Eataly is a company that sells Italian
products online and in their various locations which also feature restaurants and
activities that all relate to Italian food and products. The purpose of this paper is to
assess the level of usability of the Eataly website and how four specific design topics,
navigation, search options, professionalism, and breadcrumbs, impact the usability.
NAVIGATION/CONSISTENCY
The navigation of a website determines how site users move about the site and how they
get to the page that contains the information that they are seeking. (Stokes, 2013, p. 95).

The color scheme of the site is consistent across the site and is in line with the
company s logo. The site also doesn t have any features that would distract or intrude
while using the site such as ads or popups that ask for customer info. Another note is
that links on the site that enable users to sign in or check their order popup in an
overlay of the current page when clicked instead of taking users to a different page. An
example of this is that when something is added to a shopping cart the site doesn t force
the user off the current page to go to the cart and the cart can also be viewed on any page
without leaving the current page.
BREADCRUMBS
A breadcrumb is a visual design element on websites, usually featured just below the
header, that shows users of the site where they are on the site and allows for them to be
able to navigate the site faster since it shows them previous page links (Domagalski, n.d.).
Breadcrumbs are utilized in the sites design on every page besides the home page. The
breadcrumbs are located right below the far left side of the sites header but are not
sticky like the header. The usage of breadcrumbs allows users of the site to quickly see
which page they are located on and see which pages led them to it and go back to those
pages quickly. An example of this is on the delicate olive oil page that shows the
following breadcrumb: Home Extra Virgin Olive Oil
