stick them somewhere you can see them.

Painting a wall at school

At our school, our playground looked a bit boring, so our teachers asked everyone for ideas to
make it look more exciting. One student had a great idea: we could all paint pictures on one of
the school walls.
Each class did a different section of the wall on a different day. One class chose to paint
children playing, and another class chose to paint a rainbow. My class decided to paint
dinosaurs for our section. First, we had to draw the dinosaurs on pieces of paper. Next, we
decided where to put all the different dinosaurs on the wall. Then we went outside into the
playground and started painting our huge picture on the wall.
I painted a big dinosaur, a Brachiosaurus, eating leaves from a tall tree. Another student in my
class painted a Tyrannosaurus Rex. That was my favourite. Now the wall is finished, it looks
amazing and really colourful, and it makes us all feel happy, even when it’s raining!

Running and picking up rubbish

My name’s Luke. I’m eleven years old and I live in Brighton, a city in England. All my family
love sport and we like going running together on Saturday afternoons.
Brighton is on the coast, and people love coming here to swim and play games on the
beach. When they go home, some people leave rubbish like plastic bottles, paper or cans
behind. It makes me angry because if this rubbish goes into the sea, it’s dangerous for fish
and anything else that lives in the water. Some people say that 80% of the plastic in the
world’s oceans comes from rubbish that people threw away on land.
So we decided that we should do something to help with this problem. Now, when my
parents, my sister and I go running, each of us carries a plastic bag. When we see any
rubbish on the ground, we stop and pick it up. We always wear gloves to protect our
hands. There’s usually some rubbish in the street, and the park that we run through, but
most of it is on the beach. Then, when we get home, we empty our bags and recycle the
cans, plastic, paper and glass. We use the same plastic bags every time we go running, of
course!

Example:

0 How often do Luke and his family go running?

a every day
b every week
c every month

26 Why is Luke upset about the rubbish on the beach? [1]

a He’s worried about sea animals.
b He thinks it should be in the sea.
c He’s scared it’s dangerous for him.

27 How many plastic bags do Luke’s family take with them? [1]

Tall Ships Festival

By Orla Farrell
Tall ships are big ships that people travelled on more than a hundred years ago. There is a
special festival called the Tall Ships Festival in my city every May. Hundreds of people go to
it every year.
Last year I went to the festival with my uncle, who loves all kinds of ships, but tall ships are
his favourite. It was fantastic and I took lots of photos! We could go onto some of the ships,
and that was exciting! On one ship, called The Heron, the people who worked there showed
us all the different parts of their ship. The ship wasn’t moving, but I walked around and
imagined that I was travelling to mysterious and exotic places.
In the afternoon, we watched four of the smallest ships taking part in a short race. It was
exciting because there was quite a lot of wind and the ships moved fast. Then, in the
evening, we went to a feast on one of the ships. We had to pay, but it didn’t cost a lot of
money and the food was delicious. There was music too, and later, there were some
fireworks. They were really noisy and a bit scary!

The amazing octopus

The octopus looks very different from many other animals because it has eight arms and a
soft body with no bones. But it is a clever animal which can learn new things very quickly
and do quite difficult puzzles. An octopus’ brain is quite large, but it is very different from a
human brain, and also smaller. The central part of an octopus’ brain contains only about
10% of its brain cells. The two parts of the brain which the octopus uses to see contain
about 30% of its brain cells. The other 60% of its brain cells are in its arms. That’s like
having a small brain in each of its eight arms!
An octopus doesn’t have lungs. Instead, like fish, it has things called gills which it uses to
breathe. An octopus can take in oxygen from the water that moves past its gills. Every
octopus also has three hearts! The biggest one sends blood around its body and the two
smaller ones help blood get to and from the octopus’ gills.
Every octopus also has blue blood. That’s because octopus blood contains something
called hemocyanin, which helps the blood carry oxygen round the octopus’ body in
very cold water.

Example:

0 An octopus is like a lot of other animals. F

26 An octopus is slow to learn new things. [1]

27 Most of an octopus’ brain cells are in its central brain. [1]

28 An octopus has more than 50% of its brain cells in its arms. [1]

29 Only one of the octopus’ hearts sends blood to the gills. [1]

30 If the water is really cold, oxygen can go round an octopus’ body. [1]

Part 5
Read the text about books. For each question, circle the correct answer

My favourite book
Leila
My favourite book is about a village in the middle of a forest. Nobody who isn’t from that
village ever goes there. The people who live there want their life and their village to be a
secret. They’re friends with all the animals, too, even frogs! I’d love to go to that village,
but nobody knows where it is! I’m going to read the book again, I think.
Fran
My favourite book tells the story of a girl’s life, from the time she’s very small until she’s
a teenager. When she’s small, her family live in a big house in the countryside, then they
move to a flat in the city. She loves the city, but she sometimes misses her old life, too.
When I finished the book, I went back to the first page and started it again!
Zack
My favourite book’s about a boy who goes camping with his older brother in the
mountains. One day, they see an absolutely enormous snake which is as big as a car!
They run away really fast! I don’t like thinking about that snake! But I love the book
because it’s so exciting. I was glad I wasn’t in the mountains with them when I was
reading it, but safe at home!

Example:

0 Who has read their favourite book twice?

a Leila b Fran c Zack

23 Who read a scary story? [1]

24 Who read a book about changes? [1]

a Leila b Fran c Zack

25 Who describes a mysterious place? [1]

26 Who talks about a huge animal? [1]

Part 6
Read the article about a trip into a rainforest and the questions below.
For each question, circle the correct answer.

Toni’s trip into the rainforest

Last summer, I went on holiday with my family to Costa Rica, in Central America. One day, after
an early breakfast in our hotel, we got on a bus with two other families and drove to a national
park. When we arrived, our guide, Bernardo, was waiting for us all and took us into the
rainforest.
We walked for an hour and like in films about the rainforest, there was howling, buzzing and
chirping everywhere. It was my first trip anywhere so amazing and I couldn’t stop smiling! Some
people asked about dangerous animals, but Bernardo said that there weren’t any near us.
Bernardo showed us some plants and trees which are used to produce medicines. He also told us
about the way that rainforests reduce greenhouse gases, taking carbon dioxide from the air and
then releasing oxygen. That’s why they’re so important for everyone in the world.
Then, suddenly, Bernardo pointed at something in a tree. At first, I couldn’t see anything, but
then, I could just make out a sloth! And then, another tiny one! A mother and her baby were
moving extremely slowly towards the canopy. That was the most incredible thing that happened
during our trip.
On the bus back to the hotel, I felt a bit sad. But my parents had Bernardo’s email address, so we
could send him some photos after our holiday. I looked out of the bus window and I thought,
‘When I’m older, I’m going to be a scientist and study rainforest animals and plants!’

Example:

0 Who went into the rainforest with Bernardo?

a two families
b three families
c only Toni’s family

27 How did Toni feel when they were walking in the rainforest? [1]
a surprised about the noise
b excited about being there
c worried about some of the animals

28 Bernardo explained [1]

a how rainforests help the planet.
b how natural resources are disappearing.
c how people make things in the rainforest.
