JIPMER under new leadership

Prof. T.S.Ravikumar completed his tenure in March 2015. We would like to place on record our
appreciation for all the good work that sir had undertaken for the development of JIPMER and
wish him all the best for his future endeavors.

Prof. Subash Chandra Parija has taken over the mantle of Director, JIPMER. Under his
leadership, we are sure that JIPMER will continue in its march towards greater success in all its
activities.

World Glaucoma Awareness Week was observed from March 8th to 14th 2015. The theme for
this year was “Beat Invisible Glaucoma”

The various activities that were organized include Glaucoma screening in the Eye OPD, Rural
and Urban JIPMER Health Centres, Glaucoma awareness Marathon, Essay competition on the
theme “Beat Invisible Glaucoma” for MBBS students and Poster exhibits on Glaucoma in Tamil
and English in strategic places in JIPMER
World Kidney Day

JIPMER observed World Kidney Day on March 12, 2015. This


coinciding with the completion of 1 year of renal transplant. This
year’s theme “Kidney Health for All”. The World Kidney Day has
added significance to JIPMER because it coincides with the anniversary of the kidney
transplantation program at JIPMER. The first kidney transplantation was done at JIPMER on 3rd
March 2012.

Since then, over the past 3 years JIPMER has performed FIFTY ONE successful kidney
transplant operations. This is the largest number of kidney transplantation operation done by any
hospital in Puducherry till date.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands


administration

Contingent from JIPMER visited the Andamans recently and signed the MoU at the behest of
Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh.

As per the MoU, patients referred by the specialists of GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair, to JIPMER
will receive cashless treatment as per the Central Government Health Services rates.
New initiatives & projects to augment community benefit.

Under the “Partnership for People” initiative a portion of Curie House (old hostel) has been
remodelled and renovated to provide short term as well as long term stay for patients’ families
and relatives.The facility has 74 room, nine bathrooms and a café all available at a nominal rent .

Department Of Dietetics celebrated 'Dietetics day' on January 10. The theme for this year was
“Healthy girl become healthy mother” & “Good nutrition is an investment like no other”. On this
regard, multiple activities in schools were organized by the department.
Exclusive centre for early screening and treatment of breast disorders

Established as an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence, the Comprehensive Breast Care Centre


will offer the gamut of services such as preventive/promotive health, risk assessment and risk
reduction for breast cancer, personalised treatment of breast cancer using multidisciplinary
expertise, cosmetic surgery and palliative care. The expert group at the centre include surgical
oncologist, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, plastic surgeon, pathologist, radiologist,
geneticist, physiotherapist and counsellors.

Conferences and CMEs Organized by the Department:

Workshop on BIOETHICS 2015

Organizing Co-chairman: Dr. C. Adithan, Organizing secretary: Dr. S. Sandhiya

ICMR sponsored workshop on "BIOETHICS" organized by, Department of Clinical


Pharmacology, JIPMER, Puducherry was held in Super Specialty Block auditorium, JIPMER on
24.01.2015. A total of 114 delegates attended the workshop .

At the end of the workshop there was panel discussion followed by valedictory function. The
valedictory function address was delivered by Dr. J. Balachander, MS, JIPMER.

This workshop was awarded by Tamil Nadu Medical council, Chennai – 2 Credit hours of
Category 2 CME credits and JIPMER, Puducherry - 2 Credit hours and 10 credit points.

Dr G Vikneswaran ( I yr DM student) has attended the AHA certified BLS & ACLS course held
on 12th -14th February, 2015 at JIPMER, Puducherry.

Genome Informatics (NCGI - 2015), organized by the Dept. of Bioinformatics, SRM University,

attended The Cell Press -TNQ India Distinguished Lectureship Series 2015, featuring Professor
Eric Lander, on the topic, "The Human Genome and Beyond: A 35-year Journey of Genomic
Medicine" held on February 25, 2015 at Chennai.

I. Pharmacovigilance Awareness Programme

Department of Clinical Pharmacology, JIPMER, conducted Pharmacovigilance


Awareness Programme for the following 12 departments: Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine,
Dermatology & STD, Pediatrics, Neurology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Medical
Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Medical oncology, Clinical immunology and Psychiatry

A total of 147 doctors and 171 nurses from JIPMER participated in this awareness programme.

II. ADR monitoring centre, JIPMER:

A total of 414 adverse drug reactions (ADR) have been reported by the ADR Monitoring Centre
during the months of January to March 2015

Significant Events in the Department

1.The Newborn Hearing Assessment program in coordination with the Dept. of ENT, JIPMER
and the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore has been started in March 2015.
Under this program faculty from AIISH will provide hearing screening and diagnostic services to
all neonates born in JIPMER.

2.Two workshops on Neonatal resuscitation and Essential Newborn Care were conducted at the
Nursing College, JIPMER under NRPFGM program on 17th-18th and 24th - 25th April, 2015.

clinical / basic sciences.’ in JIPMER Scientific Society on February 20 th, 2015.

2.For the seventh World Glaucoma Awareness Week this year from March 8th to 14th 2015, the
activities organised by Department of Ophthalmology were

Glaucoma awareness Marathon on 8th March 2015 (World glaucoma Day) at 5.30 am from
Gandhi statue jointly with Aravind eye hospital.

Glaucoma screening in the Eye OPD from 9am to 4pm from March 9th (Monday) to 14th

Glaucoma screening in Rural and Urban Health Centres of JIPMER on March 10th (Tue) and on
March 13th (Fri) respectively.

Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC& RI), Chennai, where she

programme conducted at MVJ Medical College & Research Hospital, Hoskote,
Bangalore, on 28th February, 2015. In the same CME, he also participated as a faculty in

•Dr.Ramesh K Goyal, the former Vice-Chancellor of MS University, Baroda visited the


department on 17th Jan 2015. He delivered a talk on “Development of innovative therapeutics
and diagnostics through genome-based biomarkers: a dream” andinteracted with faculty
members, PGs& PhD students.

•Dr.M.Raj Rajasekaran, Research Pharmacologist at the University of California, USA visited


the Department of Pharmacology, JIPMER on 19thJan 2015.

An interactive session with the post-graduate students and the PhD scholars was arranged and he
gave them useful advices and practical tips for carrying out the research projects.

•Three pharmacists from DPR-Korea were given training on various aspects of ‘Essential

The College of Nursing has conducted nine workshops (one - Training of Nurses (TON) on
HIV/AIDS, four - TB TON and four - TB ANM trainings on HIV/AIDS) under Global Fund
fight on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) project from the allotted five districts
namely, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Namakkal and Karur during the period of January
to March 2015.
