Quota policy: AD 131 is a required course for all first year students in the Faculty of Economics and
Administrative Sciences.
Since all first year students in the Economics as well as in the Political Science and International Relations
Departments are required to take AD131 in the fall term of 2022 the course is available only to first year students
from the above Departments as well as students from the Faculty who are entitled to repeat AD 131 in accordance
with the policies of the Department and the Faculty.

Students who encounter difficulty with registration and are in need of manual consent are required to

Course Title: Introduction to Law
Course Credits: 3; (ECTS: 4)

Course Objectives:
An introductory law course with an international and comparative legal perspective that is designed for non-
lawyers. The course is designed so as to provide students with a working knowledge of the fundamental legal
concepts, practices, and specialist legal terminology.
Examinations:
One midterm (50%) and a final (50%) exam
The midterm and final exam consist of multiple-choice test questions based on the material in the relevant chapters
of the designated reading material as well as the material in the instructor’s lecture handouts.
Grading scale:
The official grading scale as prescribed by the Faculty is as listed below:
AA: 90-100; BA: 85-89; BB: 80-84; CB: 75-79; CC: 70-74; DC: 65-69; DD: 60-64; F: 00-59
Material for the course:
Lecture presentations and handouts prepared and provided by the instructor of the course in respect of each lecture
together with reading material indicated for that lecture selected either from the supplementary material to be
provided and/or current reports/cases, as and where deemed appropriate by the instructor.

 The study of law as a subject in itself and its connection with other subjects, in particular with Management,
Economics and Political Science and International Relations; The legal profession; Law as an interdisciplinary
academic subject at university
 The development of legal cultures; the concept of legal culture; legal structures and concepts
 Divisions and families of law/the variety of legal cultures – Part I: Civil law
 Divisions and families of law/the variety of legal cultures – Part II: Common law
 Sources of law: custom, judicial precedents, case-law, la doctrine
 Sources of law: Legislation and Codification (Codes Statutes/Acts); Equity; Subsidiary Sources of law;
 Sources of Turkish law (Turkish law: Its history and development (The hierarchy of laws in Turkey; the
Turkish judicial system)
 International law; International public law; International private law; International treaties
 Judicial institutions and structural mechanisms of the legal system
 Branches of law (Public law: Constitutional law; Administrative law; Criminal law)
 Branches of law (Private law: Civil law; Law of Persons; Family Law; Law of Succession (Inheritance Law);
Law of Property
 Law of Procedure (Civil procedure; Criminal procedure)
