favourite sports team has been involved in a sports scandal connected to sports
betting. Your editor has asked you to write a feature article about the event and
the issue of sports betting.
● Write a feature article for the school magazine.

● Describe the incident, how it was discovered and potential penalties the
people involved face.
● Include an interesting title for your article.
3. Learning English through Workplace Communication
You read a news article about the laws and regulations regarding sickness
allowance around the world. You notice that different countries have different
policies regarding paid sick leave, and you think more places should provide
sickness allowance to their employees.
● Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper about the issue.

● Describe the issue, why you think more places should adopt new paid sick
leave policies and why that is beneficial to the society.
● Include an appropriate title for your letter to the editor.
4. Learning English through Social Issues
In a recent epidemic, many public health experts have promoted non-

pharmacological intervention techniques such as social distancing to help
prevent the disease from spreading in the community. However, many people
have complained that doing so would be devastating to their livelihood.
● Write a letter to the editor about the issue.

● Describe the intervention technique and its importance, and explain why it
is difficult for some people to adopt it and how you think those difficulties
can be mitigated.
● Give your letter an appropriate subject heading.
5. Learning English through Debating
Your school is holding its annual debating competition. In order to take part in it,
you have to submit a debate speech on the motion ‘Fake news is a product of the
Internet Age’. You can choose either the affirmative or negative position.

● Explain your stance, give your main arguments and use examples to
elaborate on your stance.

You came across the following comment on an online forum:
‘All these new social media platforms are confusing and frustrating me. One
comes up after another, and peer pressure has me installing a new one and
updating an old one every few months. They’re all essentially doing the same
thing: pretending it’s all free while shoving targeted ads at naïve users. Social
media should be banned for all of our sakes!’

You have been asked to review one of your favourite songs by a magazine
editor.
● Write a review of a song by an artist of your choice. Include the name

of the song.
● Explain the meaning of the song and describe how it makes you feel.

Your local library is holding a fan-fiction competition. You have decided to take part
in it by writing a short story based on the characters in your favourite novel.
