Question 1

As a student, I think the topic is very interesting and relevant to our society today. I agree
that social media has revolutionized the way we interact with each other and how we view
the world. With billions of people actively using social media, it is clear that it has become an
integral part of our daily lives.

On the other hand, social media is now a significant marketing tool for businesses and the
economy. With the emergence of influencers like Mihlali Ndamase and Lasizwe Dambuza,
businesses can easily connect with their target audience through social media channels.
Also, entrepreneurs can now showcase their products and services to a larger audience with
the help of social media.

Furthermore, social media can be a powerful tool in tackling youth unemployment in South
Africa as Lasizwe suggests. By using social media to promote their skills and talents, young
people can gain exposure to potential employers and showcase their strengths beyond
geographical boundaries. Social media could also be used to create job opportunities for
young people by providing useful information and training on career paths and job openings.

According to (Wong, 2023) social media has things a person should develop. These things
include a set of rules by which you will evaluate each new social network of connections.
These things are:

· Know your target market

Instead of joining an unfamiliar platform and trying to get your audience to it, it makes more
sense to reach them where they are already together. By understanding who your target
market is, the platforms they use, and the type of content that interests them, you can create
more relevant and effective content that resonates with them. This will make it easier to
reach and engage them.

· Keep up to date with social media statistics

Every time an upcoming social media network appears, it's a must to understand the
difference between a flashy novelty toy and a rapidly developing platform with staying power.
Although no one can predict the future, comparing a platform's statistics to those of well-
established social media networks might help determine whether it will survive. For example,
if a new social media network has a low user base compared to well-established networks, it
is likely that its content will remain limited and its reach will be limited as well. This might
indicate that it will not have the same staying power as those with more users.

· Grow to your primary company goals

To make those goals a reality, you need a well-crafted social media plan that works in
tandem with your overall business objectives. Some key tactics include creating quality
content, engaging with your audience, utilizing paid advertising, and monitoring your
analytics. This is to measure success and adjust as needed. Don’t forget to also stay up-to-
date on the latest social media trends and best practices to ensure you're maximizing the
potential of these platforms for your business.

2
Positive aspects of social media

Social media allows individuals to express themselves creatively through various forms of
content such as photos, videos, and music. It enables users to connect with like-minded
individuals and build communities around shared interests and values. Many social media
accounts and channels are dedicated to education and learning, providing users with access
to valuable information and resources. Some platforms offer a wide range of entertaining
content, from funny videos to engaging stories, providing users with a break from their daily
routines. Social media also offers platforms for individuals and businesses to promote their
products and services, reach a wider audience, and build their brand.

Overall, social media has the potential to be a powerful tool for personal and professional
growth, as well as a source of entertainment and connection.

Negative aspects of social media

While social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have many positive
aspects, they also have some negative aspects such as cyberbullying, addiction, privacy
concerns, incorrect information, and unrealistic expectations. It involves using technology to
harass, intimidate, or embarrass others online, and can have serious consequences for the
victim's mental health and well-being. Spending excessive amounts of time on social media,
difficulty disconnecting from social media, neglecting responsibilities, and negative impacts
on mental health are growing concerns for a social media addict. On TikTok, cyberbullying
can take the form of inappropriate comments or messages, targeted harassment, or even
the creation of videos that mock or humiliate others. Similarly, on YouTube, users can leave
hurtful comments or create videos that bully or ridicule others. Instagram can also be a
platform for cyberbullying, where users can post hurtful comments, spread rumors, or share
embarrassing photos.

To prevent all these negative things from happening, it is critical for users to be mindful of
their own behavior online. In addition, they should report any bullying incidents they witness
or experience. Social media platforms have policies in place to address these issues. Users
can report harassment or abuse incidents to the platform's support team. Parents and
educators should also educate children and young adults about social media dangers and
how to stay safe online.

CONCLUSION

I agree that social media is a crucial part of human life, providing a means of connection,
entertainment, learning, and earning. However, we must be mindful of its negative effects.
One way to address this is to raise awareness of the potential risks associated with social
media. Educating people about the dangers of cyberbullying, addiction, and privacy
concerns can encourage safe and responsible use of social media platforms. The platforms
themselves can lighten up these issues by implementing policies and features that protect
users privacy and promote safety and well-being. As users, it is our responsibility to behave
responsibly online, such as by limiting our social media activity to prevent addiction and
reporting instances of bullying or abuse. In conclusion, social media can be a positive force if
used responsibly.

QUESTION 2

2.1 According to (can social networking boost literacy skills?, 2018) the studies conducted in
Britain exhibit concerning statistics, however, it's crucial not to generalize that children and
teenagers don't read. Instead, it's essential to identify the possible reasons contributing to
their reluctance and encourage them to explore different types of reading both inside and
outside the classroom.

2.2 According to (Hierarchy of influences - reese - wiley online library, 2019) technology has
transformed journalism, with the rise of social media, the ubiquity of mobile devices, and the
development of artificial intelligence all having significant effects. Now journalists have
access to a wealth of data and resources that were previously unimaginable, and news is
disseminated more quickly and widely than ever before. In addition to creating challenges for
journalists, new technologies have also created issues like fake news.

2.3 According to (Repairing Confident Information Coverage Holes for Big Data Collection in
Large-Scale Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, 2019) social media
influencers are able to influence public opinion due to their large following. However, fake

news has caused both influencers and their audiences to face dangers. As a result,
false information can spread easily and be believed, leading to serious
consequences including panic, misinformation, and harm to individuals or society at large. It
is therefore imperative for influencers to take responsibility for the accuracy of the
information

2.4 According to (Self-service media: Public Radio Personalities, reality podcasting, and ...
2019) new technologies and changing listeners' habits, the radio industry in South Africa is
facing challenges. Traditional radio audiences are declining as a result of streaming
services, podcasts, and other digital platforms. Many industry experts expect radio to
continue to play a vital role in South African media in the future, particularly in rural areas,
where access to digital media is limited.

2.5 According to (Hodges & Edwards, 2014) public relations and advocacy aim to
influence public opinion and policy, but public relations focuses more on managing an
organization's image and reputation, while advocacy seeks to change a particular problem or
set of problems.
