VII. READING COMPREHENSION

 More than two hundred years ago, the term “environmental pollution” was quite strange to
people. They lived healthily, drank pure water and breathed fresh air. Nowadays, the situation
7
SÁCH BÀI TẬP ANH VĂN BUỔI 2 – Lớp 9 – HKII – HẬU GIANG 2022 - 2023
is quite different. People all over the world are worried about things that are happening to the
environment. Actually it is man that is destroying the surroundings with many kinds of wastes.
Motorbikes and cars people use cause air pollution; waste factories produced pollute water and
soil; scattering garbage does harm to people’s health. What should people do to protect the
environment?

1. More than two hundred years ago, people knew nothing about
environmental pollution. ______
2. Nowadays, many people are concerned about the environment. ______
3. Air pollution can be caused by vehicles. ______
4. Littering does not do harm to people’s health. ______

6. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. People used to live healthily.
B. Our environment today is not the same as it was.
C. People shouldn’t do anything in this situation.
D. Things that are happening to the environment are worrying.

 Today I’d like to begin a discussion on the problem of the heating up of the earth. First,
we’ll touch on the relationship between fluorocarbons and the ozone layer. You probably
remember that the ozone layer is the protective shield around the earth. It is important to all
life, because it filters out harmful ultraviolet light from the sun. Ozone itself, a form of oxygen,
is regularly destroyed by natural chemical processes.
The problem now is that too much of the ozone layer is being destroyed. Scientists suspect
that certain chemicals, such as fluorocarbons, are contributing to the depletion of the ozone
layer. And how do we use fluorocarbons? The most common uses are in spray cans and
cooling systems. The chemical pollution from these fluorocarbons can account for some of
the ozone losses that have been reported. There are, however, new studies linking the sun
itself to the depletion of the ozone layer.
1. The most important purpose of the ozone layer is protecting the earth ______
2. Ultraviolet light from the sun is filtered by the ozone layer. ______
3. The ozone layer is made of shields. ______
4. Fluorocarbons are used in spray cans and cooling systems. ______

VII. READING COMPREHENSION (1.5 pts)

Every day on radio, on TV, and in the newspapers, we hear, see, or read about many problems in
the world, for example, pollution problems.
Air pollution is the first kind. It mostly comes from fumes released from motorbikes, cars,
airplanes, trains, and poisonous gases emitted from factories. Also, waste is dumped anywhere,
even in the city where many people are living. The second pollution problem is sea pollution.
Many people earn their living from fishing in the sea, and the fish they catch feed many people.
But the sea has become so polluted from oil spills and factory waste that the fish are dying. This
pollution is not only killing the fish, but is also affecting those people who eat fish.
Seldom do you find a place nowadays that is not polluted. This problem is growing more difficult
every day. We must find a good solution that makes the world a better place to live.

VII. READING COMPREHENSION

Many people still believe that natural resources will never be used up. Actually, the world’s
energy resources are limited. Nobody knows exactly how much fuel is left. However we also
should use them economically and try to find alternative sources of power. According to
Professor Marvin Burnham of the New England Institute of Technology, we have to start
conserving coal, oil and gas before it was too late, and nuclear power is the only alternative.
However, many people do not approve of using nuclear power because it is very dangerous.
What would happen if there were a serious nuclear accident? Radio activity causes cancer

The weather is not beautiful all of the time. Perhaps you can remember a day when bad weather
made you afraid. One kind of bad weather that scares many people is called a thunderstorm. This
is what happens when there is a thunderstorm. First you see a sudden flash of bright light. A few
seconds later you hear a loud rumbling sound. This quick flash is called lightning, and the loud
sound is called thunder. Lightning is colorful, but it can cause serious problems. Lightning is
55

two clouds, or between two parts of the same cloud. The lightning heats the air around it. This hot

thought you were imagining things.
Recently, however, there have been many more reports of UFO sightings. Many of these objects,
too, have been seen by more than one person, so it is not easy to laugh at them. Occasionally,
photographs have been taken which show that there was something there. But what was it? There
is still such a lot we don’t understand about the world we live in.

VII. READING COMPREHENSION (1.5 pts)

Humans have long been fascinated by outer space, and have wondered if there are intelligent life-
forms elsewhere, which we might be able to contact. Naturally, we’ve seen space creatures on our
TV and cinema screens, but “aliens” like these owe more to the convenience of using human
actors to play the parts than to any real form of scientific investigation.
However, many serious space researchers are now beginning to turn their attention to the question
of what alien life might actually look like. One early result is Arnold the Alien, designed by biologist
Dougal Dixon. This strange being, unlike humans, has its eyes, ears, and limbs in groups of three
instead of pairs, but, despite its odd appearance, its behavior is not very different from our own.
29. People have been interested in creatures from outer space for a long time. ______
30. Most space creatures in films are based on real forms of scientific investigation. ______
31. According to Dougal Dixon, aliens live in groups of three. ______
32. The alien designed by Dougal Dixon has three arms and three legs. ______

A. the real appearance of space creatures.
B. intelligent life-forms in outer space.
C. space creatures on our TV and cinema screens.
D. space creatures’ behavior.
34. What is the passage mainly about?
A. life on other planets. B. scientific research on space
C. aliens D. The biologist Dougal Dixon.

UNIT 6
Our Oceans are becoming extremely polluted. Most of this pollution comes from the land, which
means it comes from people. Firstly, there is raw sewage, which is pumped directly into the sea.
Many countries, both developed and developing, are guilty of doing this. Secondly, ships drop
about 6 million tons of garbage into the sea each year. Thirdly, there are oil spills from ships. A
ship has an accident and oil leaks from the vessel. This not only pollutes the water, but it also kills
marine life. Next, there waste materials from factories. Without proper regulations, factory owners
let the waste run directly into the rivers, which then lead to the sea. And finally, oil is washed
from land. This can
be a result of carelessness or deliberate dumping of waste.

UNIT 7
Are you looking for a cheap, clean, effective source of power that doesn’t cause pollution or waste
natural resources? Look no further than solar energy from our sun. At present, most of our
electricity comes from the use of coal, and gas, oil or nuclear power. This power could be provided
by the sun. One percent of the solar energy that reaches the Earth is enough to provide power for
the total population.
Many countries are already using solar energy. Solar panels are placed on the roof of a house and
the Sun’s energy is used to heat water. The energy can be stored for a number of days, so on
cloudy days you can use solar energy too.
Sweden has an advanced solar energy program. There, all buildings will be heated by solar energy
and cars will use solar power instead of gas by the year 2015.

UNIT 9
If you live in an earthquake zone, you should take some time to look around your house. Place
heavy books on the bottom shelf of your bookshelves. Block the rollers on your fridge and washing
machine to prevent them from moving. Put hanging potted plants in plastic containers. Check the
mirrors in your bathroom and bedroom. Make sure they can’t move. Don’t put your bed next to a
window.
Planning where you are going to be during an earthquake is very important. The first thing to
remember is to stay inside. Then you should sit under a strong table or doorway, or stand in the
corner of a room.

UNIT 10
Good evening. Welcome to our Science for Fun Program. This week we’ve received a lot of
questions asking about life on the moon. We’ve talked to some experts and this is what we’ve
found out. There is no water or air on the moon. It is all silent because there is no air. Of course
there will be no music, no sounds. There are no rivers and no lakes. At night it is very cold. The
temperature goes down to 1500C below zero, but during the day the temperature rises to 1000C
above zero.
There are great round holes on the moon. They look like big lakes. They are called craters. There
are more than 30,000 craters on the moon. There are also high mountains. The highest mountains
on the moon are about 26,000 feet or 8,000 meters high.
And here is something very interesting to know: on the moon you weigh one sixth of what you
weigh on earth. If you weigh 50 kilos, on the moon you weigh only a little more than 8 kilos. You
will be able to jump very high, even higher than an Olympic Champion. You can take very long
steps as well. And…maybe you won’t sleep very well because one day on the moon lasts for two
weeks.
So, is there life on the moon? I’ll leave the question for you to answer yourself.
