1. A. Define the term national value.
 National Values can be defined as a representation of the paramount values upheld throughout the common
cultural experience of the nation.
 It can also be defined as the accepted principles or standards of a group of people
 Values are standards, rules and criteria that influence and determine how the individual should behave in a
society. (2Marks)
B.. Explain four (4) factors that promotes national value
 CONSISTENCY – This is the attitude of doing what is right all the time and this has the tendency of
promoting good moral values in the society
 TRUST – This is the attitude of having confidence in someone in doing what is right. This will promote
societal and individual value system.
 TOLERANCE – The ability to tolerate other people’s behaviours when they go wrong will help to sustain
value system as such values will be improved upon.
 FAIRNESS – We should learn to treat other people in the society fairly so that our values will not be
destroyed
 INTEGRITY – This is the attitude of having the sense of probity and accountability and when this attitude
is present in our society, our value system will be promoted and sustained (8 Marks)
2. A.. Explain the meaning of the following terms:
o Rights are claims of individuals as citizens of a country. These rights include right to life etc
o Duties are the obligations and actions which are expected from citizens in return for the rights of
freedom they enjoy as citizens of a country. For example it is our duty as citizens to pay tax etc (4
marks)

3. A.. Define the following terms: (i) National consciousness (ii) National identity
I. National Consciousness is also known as Nationalism. This is the feeling of love for one’s country. The
love for one’s country is paramount in the mind of such individual.
II. National identity refers to the characteristics by which a Nation can be recognized.
Identity is a situation in which things are the same or alike.
B.. State four (4) items in the Nigerian Coat of Arms and there meanings.
THE COAT OF ARMS

 The black shield represents the good soil of Nigeria.


 The Eagle represents the strength of Nigeria.
 The horses represent the dignity and pride of Nigeria.
 The Y shape on the shield represents the Rivers Niger and Benue which flow through the parts of Nigeria.
 The flowers stands for the beauty of Nigeria as seen from flower called cactus spectabilis commonly found in
most parts of Nigeria. (8 Marks)
4. A.. Define common crimes
 Common crimes are misconducts that are prevalent in the society whish are punishable by law.
 Any act of breaking the law that is punishable by the governing authority of the society. (2 marks)
B.. Explain four (4) causes of common crimes.
I. Weakness
People are not bad by nature, but sometimes simply too timid to resist the vicious demons that play on their
weaknesses and cut their bond with the source of their Power.
lack of faith, not believing enough in the power of one's own internal weapons (against inner demons),
such as:
imbalance - most criminals are simply too strong physically, pumping up the body muscles, but not
enough the mental and emotional muscles.
II. Poor judgment
Lack of proper education and great role-models causes many to fail to distinguish right from wrong.
III. Lack of love
Being raised in a dysfunctional family, or coming from a disadvantaged background, or feeling
discriminated, none of it alone can cause crime
IV. Poverty
Poverty is often blamed for leading to crime, however underneath is something more vital - society
bombards us with commercial values, making us want more and more material things, to the point when
some would do anything (including criminal acts) to get them. (8 marks)
5. A.. List one state occupied by the following ethnic groups in Nigeria.
I. Yoruba ---- Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Lagos and in parts of Kwara, Kogi and Edo states.
II. Hausa ----- Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Adamawa
III. Igbo ------- Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo and parts of Delta and Rivers States.

B. Identify three (3) ways of promoting national unity.

I. TOLERANCE: When we tolerate one another, we can live as brother and sisters and the peace of the
Nation will be sustained.
II. HOSPITALIYT: This is the act of receiving one another in a friendly atmosphere. The habit of treating
one another as brother’s keeper, this will remove hatred, and peace and unity will be promoted.
III. NON-DISCRIMINATION: This is to relate with one another on equal basis and terms. Everyone
should not think of himself more highly or superior than others.
IV. INTER MARRIAGE: When people from different ethnic groups marry one another, we learn from one
another and known our cultural differences which will bring about unity.
V. SUPPORT GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME: When we all support government programmes,
governance will be smooth and easy. We will all be the beneficiaries of the dividends of democracy; we
will see ourselves as one.
VI. We should not run down one another we should share in our joy and sorrows (6 marks)
