Introduction
A closer examination of psychiatrist reveals the Greeks as pioneer of some manuals about
mental disorders. In addition, the beginning of psychiatry as a medical specialty is dated to the
middle of the nineteenth century

What does psychiatrist stand for?

Psychiatrist deal with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with mental,
behavioral and emotional disorders.

What should be the duties of a psychiatrist?

First of all, he is evaluating and diagnosing patients. If the patient shows warning signs, the
psychiatrist will actually prescribe medications. But we’d better know that medications are not the
only forms of treatment, we can also find out: psychotherapy or electroconvulsive therapy.

Secondly, psychiatrist should be able to be aware of the factors that affect the physical health and
well-being of people who have mental illnesses and be able to intervene appropriately.

For sure, there are some requirements to apply for this job:

It is important to remind people that a psychiatrist works in a specialized branch of medicine that
fixed on diagnosing, treating and preventing behavioral mental and emotional disorder.

As a result, those qualifications are:

 The ability to manage uncertainty
 Dealing with difficult emotions
 A broad understanding of illness

Afterwards, these are the educative precondition:

 Psychiatrist attend medical school and gets an MD or Doctor of Medicine


 Then they can go on for additional, specialized training in psychiatry during a residency for
three or four years

Do you know someone famous doing this job?

Arnold Cooper was born on March, 9th 1923 and died on June 2011.
He was the Tobin-Cooper Professor Emeritus in Consultation-Liaison psychiatry at the Weill Cornell
Medical College and the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic. He was a supervising and training analyst
at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.

Cooper is famous within the psychoanalytic community for his elaborations on the interdependence
between narcissism and masochism.

1974 until 1994, he was the Vice Chair for Education and the Residency Training Director for the
department of psychiatry at Cornell. He was a president of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
He was graduated from Columbia University and the University of Utah School of Medicine.

Is it cool to be a psychiatrist?

Yes, it is. But we may find just a few advantage.

Could you relate those benefits of being a psychiatrist?

The main advantage is actually the help that they provide. For example, if a patient
suffers from mental disorders associated to traumatic experience, he will get satisfaction from
helping his patient. This satisfaction is a great reward. Another advantage is wherever they work,
psychiatrist generally work in peace and private for their patient’s comfort.

What do you know about the inconvenient of this job?

Talking of it. There is significant number of inconvenient, such as:


 Dealing with difficult patients
 Emotional draining and cognitive dulling or mentally draining
 Psychiatrist often make difficult decisions, such as depriving people of their liberty.

To sum up, psychiatrist helps one to understand the exact cause of their stress or
disorder and also provides treatment for helping in reduction of social disorders peaked. It is
paramount to remind people that we are all crazy in our own way.
