Background
Geospatial Technology is an emerging field of study that enables us to acquire georeferenced data and
use it for analysis, modeling, simulations and visualization. Remote sensing imageries and derived
products are a direct input for geospatial data generation, monitoring resources and providing citizen
services. As of now, geospatial technology has made inroads into various sectors in India both in the
public and private domains. The major sectors using this technology are agriculture,
telecommunication, oil & gas, environmental management, forestry, public safety, infrastructure, and
logistics. The current plans and initiatives call for geospatial capabilities that are larger than what the
geospatial industry can currently provide. Hence there is an urgent requirement for trained human
resources in the area of geospatial technology and its applications.

About IIRS
Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a unit under Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO),
Department of Space, Government of India is a premier Training and Educational Institute set-up for
developing trained professionals in the field of Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics and GNSS Technology
for Natural Resources, Environmental and Disaster Management. Formerly known as Indian Photo-
interpretation Institute (IPI), founded in 1966, the Institute boasts to be the first of its kind in entire
South-East Asia. While nurturing its primary endeavor to build capacity among the user community
by training mid-career professionals, the Institute has enhanced its capability and evolved many
training and education programmes that are tuned to meet the requirements of various target user
groups in the society, ranging from fresh graduates to policy makers including academia.
The training and education programmes at IIRS includes the short duration customized courses, PG
Diploma, Master’s Degree (M.Tech and M.Sc.) in various disciplines. IIRS also conducts distance
learning courses for mass scale capacity building under IIRS Outreach Programme.

IIRS Outreach Programme

IIRS Outreach Programme focusses on strengthening the Academia and User Segments in Space
Technology & Its Applications using Online Learning Platforms. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing
(IIRS)/ ISRO has started its Distance Learning Program in the year 2007. The distance learning program
was started with the basic objective of creating awareness among students and working professionals
in the areas of fundamentals and advanced concepts of Remote Sensing technology and its applications.
Later, the programme was also extended to meet the training and capacity building requirements of
user departments in central and state government using online learning platforms. Till December 2021,
IIRS has successfully conducted 125 online courses in Live & Interactive mode and also launched five
online courses under e-learning/MOOC initiatives. Currently IIRS distance learning programme is
being conducted through following two modes:
1. Live and Interactive classroom sessions (https://eclass.iirs.gov.in)
2. E-learning/MOOC based online courses (https://elearning.iirs.gov.in)

Live and Interactive classroom

The use of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Global Navigation Satellite System and
associated geospatial technologies is increasing rapidly, creating an urgent demand for trained human
resources. The live and interactive mode of distance learning is enabled through indigenously
developed online learning platform of IIRS i.e. E-Class portal. The programs are available without any
cost to the user. The live and interactive sessions will be conducted by experts from IIRS-ISRO and
other knowledge Institutions. IIRS has successfully conducted 125 such courses so far with
participation of over 445072+ participants from 3007+ academic institutions, government departments
and industry.
Course Announcement
All the online courses of IIRS are announced at- https://www.iirs.gov.in/EDUSAT-News.
The course guidelines are available at -
https://eclass.iirs.gov.in/assets/guidelines_for_participants.pdf

How to Join?
A. Become IIRS Nodal Centre (INC):
IIRS-ISRO online courses are an innovative approach for mass scale training and capacity building on
geospatial technology and its applications. IIRS has setup a network of academic and professional
Institutions in India under its outreach programme. Till December 2021, total 3007+ Institutions are
networked under IIRS Outreach Network (ION) where each network Institute is known as “IIRS Nodal
Centre (INC)”. To become Nodal Centre for conducting online courses of IIRS at
Institute/Organization level, the Interested Institute has to identify one senior officer or faculty
member as coordinator. The identified coordinator has to register themselves in IIRS website at-
https://elearning.iirs.gov.in/edusatregistration/coordinator. The Instructions re also available at -
https://elearning.iirs.gov.in/edusatregistration/coordinatorInstructions.
There is no registration fee to become IIRS Nodal Centre.
B. Registration of the participants:
The participant can register for the course under any identified INC. The coordinator of selected INC
will review the participant’s registration and approve for the course. All the approved participants will
receive login credentials for IIRS E-CLASS platform for participating in the course. The course
guidelines for the participants is hosted at-
https://eclass.iirs.gov.in/assets/guidelines_for_participants.pdf
If the Institute/Organization of any participant is not listed in course registration page of IIRS online
courses then the participant has to approach his/her Institute to become IIRS Nodal Centre. The
participant can also register as individual learner for the course. In such cases, the participant will be
self-responsible for his/her course management and name of his/her Institute/Organization will not
be printed in the course certificate.

Course Delivery & Programme Reception

The Live & Interactive courses will be delivered through IIRS-ISRO active learning platform E-CLASS
(https://eclass.iirs.gov.in). E-CLASS platform provides reception of live & interactive sessions,
download of study materials, access to offline sessions, auto-attendance recording system, notice
board, self-assessment and examination system, feedback system etc.
No specific hardware /software required. However it is recommended good internet connectivity at
user end. However, to run the programme is remote class room mode at Institute level following
computer hardware may be required:
