One example of lightweight structural design is the windscreen steel. The upper casting incorporates mounts for the soft-top
frame. On open-top vehicles, it is a part of the body that has very locking mechanism, wiring and seals. And because of the strict

Crash design features of the body (load transfer paths)

On account of the mid-engine concept, very specific requirements

apply to the crash design. During a frontal collision, for example,
the complete mass of the drive line must be absorbed by the
structure for the full duration of the collision. To achieve that, the
forces which occur during a frontal impact are transferred to the
other parts of the vehicle structure via 3 load paths. To dissipate
the impact energy, the side members should deform in a control-
led manner and transmit the residual energy to the next compo-
nent as effectively as possible.

When repairing such a complex body, it is important to keep these

defined deformation zones intact and not to disrupt the transfer of
forces. To guarantee that this is the case after repair work is
completed, the repair depths and repair methods are defined in
precise detail and described in the current ELSA service literature.

Soft-top operating button E137

The soft-top operating button is integrated in the centre console.

It initiates the soft-top raising/lowering sequence. If the soft-top
operating button E137 sends the "actuated" signal for about 60 s
(time-out), the static event "soft-top raising/lowering button –
implausible signal" is registered in the event memory. This can
occur, for example, if the soft-top operating button E137 is inad-
vertently continuously operated by an object (briefcase, mobile
phone etc.). As soon as the soft-top operating button E137 is free
again, the event memory entry changes to "sporadic". It is again

Automatic soft-top valve 3

Automatic soft-top valve 1 N272 directs the oil from the hydraulic N342
pump to the hydraulic cylinders that are responsible for raising and (locks and unlocks the soft-top compartment cover)
lowering the soft-top fins.
When the hydraulic pump is running, pressure is applied to the
piston-rod ends of the hydraulic cylinders, see page 36. It makes no
difference in this case in which direction the pump is rotating.
The piston ends (see page 36) of the hydraulic cylinders are differen-
tially actuated. That means that the direction of rotation of the
hydraulic pump changes according to the operation required.
Consequently, there is either pressure or no pressure acting on the
piston ends of the cylinders.
If pressure is applied to the piston ends of the cylinders, the piston
rods are forced out of the cylinders due to the larger effective
surface areas. Since the piston rods are attached to the soft-top
fins, the soft-top fins move downwards past the point of equilib-
rium and tension the soft-top.
If no pressure is applied to the piston ends of the cylinders, the
piston rods are forced back into the cylinders due to the pressure
constantly acting on the piston-rod ends. Since the piston rods are
attached to the soft-top fins, the soft-top fins move upwards and
release the tension on the soft-top.

Automatic soft-top valve 2 N341

Automatic soft-top valve 2 N341 is responsible for closing the

soft-top compartment cover. Valve 2 directs the oil from the
hydraulic pump to the hydraulic cylinders that are responsible for
moving the soft-top compartment cover.
When valve 2 switches over, the hydraulic fluid flows into the
piston ends of the hydraulic cylinders. No pressure is acting on the
piston-rod ends. When pressure is applied to the piston ends of the
cylinders, the piston rods are forced out of the cylinders. Since the
piston rods are attached to the soft-top compartment cover, the
soft-top compartment cover closes due to the action of the
mechanical linkage.

Automatic soft-top valve 3 N342

Automatic soft-top valve 3 N342 directs the oil from the hydraulic
pump to the hydraulic cylinders that are responsible for locking/
unlocking the soft-top compartment cover. When the hydraulic Automatic soft-top valve 1
pump is running, pressure is applied to the piston-rod ends of the N272
(raises and lowers the soft-top fins)
hydraulic cylinders. It makes no difference in this case in which
direction the pump is rotating.
The piston ends of the hydraulic cylinders are differentially actu-
ated. That means that the direction of rotation of the hydraulic
pump changes according to the operation required. Consequently,
there is either pressure or no pressure acting on the piston ends of
the cylinders.
If pressure is applied to the piston ends of the cylinders, the piston
rods are forced out of the cylinders due to the larger effective
surface areas. Since the piston rods are attached to the soft-top
compartment cover lock, the catches release the soft-top compart-
ment cover due to the action of the mechanical linkage.
If no pressure is applied to the piston ends of the cylinders, the
piston rods are forced back into the cylinders due to the pressure
constantly acting on the piston-rod ends. Since the piston rods are
attached to the soft-top compartment cover lock, the catches lock
the soft-top compartment cover due to the action of the mechani-
cal linkage.

That means that the direction of rotation of the hydraulic pump
changes according to the operation required. Consequently, there
is either pressure or no pressure acting on the piston end of the

If pressure is applied to the piston end of the cylinders, the piston
rod is forced out of the cylinder due to the larger effective surface
area. As the piston rod is attached to the linkage for the soft-top
lock catches, the catches open and release the soft-top from the
windscreen frame.
If no pressure is applied to the piston ends of the cylinders, the
piston rod is forced back into the cylinder due to the pressure

close and lock the soft-top to the windscreen frame.

Automatic soft-top valve 5 N504

hydraulic pump to the hydraulic cylinders that are responsible for
moving the soft-top compartment cover.
When valve 5 switches over, the hydraulic fluid flows into the
piston-rod ends of the hydraulic cylinders. No pressure is acting on
the piston ends. When pressure is applied to the piston-rod ends of

The Audi R8 Spyder is fitted with an electric rear window as stand- Rear window
ard. The rear window can help to reduce air turbulence in the
passenger cell and thus increase ride comfort. The rear window can
be opened and closed manually (pulling/pushing and holding the
switch) when the soft-top is up or down. During the automatic
soft-top sequence it can only be opened (one-touch operation of
the switch). If the soft-top is in an intermediate position, the rear
window cannot be operated.

653_084

Operation

The rear window is moved up or down by means of the rear window

button E361. The rear window can be extended or retracted when
the soft-top is up or down. The rear window has 3 different raised
positions.

Rear window
1. Wind deflector position:
The rear window can only be set to the wind deflector position
when the soft-top is down. In the wind deflector position, the
rear window is slightly lower than in the fully closed position.
The purpose of the wind deflector position is to reduce air
turbulence in the passenger compartment.
If the rear window button E361 is pulled back and held, the rear
window automatically stops when it reaches the wind deflector
position.

2. C
 losed position:
The window can only be moved to the closed position when the
soft-top is raised. In the closed position, the rear window is
slightly higher than in the wind deflector position.
The purpose of the closed position is to seal off the passenger
compartment from the outside.
If the rear window button E361 is pulled back and held, the rear 653_085
window automatically stops when it reaches the closed position.

3. C
 leaning position:
The purpose of the cleaning position is to make it easier to clean
the rear window. The window is thus extended further than the
wind deflector position. To set the window to the cleaning
position, it first has to be moved to the wind deflector position.
The rear window button E361 then has to be pulled back and
held again. In addition, within 1 second, the soft-top operation
button E137 also has to be pulled back and held until the
window reaches the cleaning position. The window can only be
set tot he cleaning position when the vehicle is stationary.

the button forwards lowers the rear window and pulling it back
raises the window. The rear window button E361 is located on the
centre console on the right of the soft-top operation button E137
as seen when facing forwards.
The soft-top operation control unit J256 processes the signals from
the rear window button E361 and monitors the length of time the
button is held. If the rear window button E361 sends the "actu-
ated" signal for about 60 s (time-out), the static event "rear
window button – implausible signal" is registered in the event
memory. This can occur, for example, if the rear window button
E361 is inadvertently continuously operated by an object (brief-
case, mobile phone etc.). As soon as the object is removed and the
rear window button E361 is free again, the event memory entry
changes to "sporadic". The rear window can then be operated

Rear window module

As already familiar from the previous model, the
Audi R8 Spyder (Type 4S) also has a rear window module. In
contrast with its predecessor, the rear window module is now
made of plastic, while the rear window itself is still made of glass.

The rear window has four different functions:

• It forms part of the raised convertible top and can be raised and
lowered when the top is up.
• When the top is down, it can be used in addition to the wind
deflector to further reduce air turbulence in the passenger
compartment.

In addition to the functions listed, the rear window also has a

cleaning position. This allows it to be extended beyond its normal
limit of upward travel, see page 55.
