Task 5: Republic Act 9147

1. What is RA 91475 known as ?


Answer: This Act shall be known as the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.”
2. What is RA 91475 about ?
Answer: Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. (Republic Act No. 9147). An
Act providing for the conservation and protection of wildlife resources and their habitats,
appropriating funds therefor and for other purposes.
3. Enumerate 4 objectives of the act as identified in the Declaration policy of RA 9147 ?
Answer: According to Section 2 of RA 9147 the Declaration of Policy. It shall be the policy of the
State to conserve the country’s wildlife resources and their habitats for sustainability. In the
pursuit of this policy, there are 4 objectives and these are the ;
(a) to conserve and protect wildlife species and their habitats to promote ecological balance
and enhance biological diversity;
(b) to regulate the collection and trade of wildlife;
(c) to pursue, with due regard to the national interest, the Philippine commitment to
international conventions, protection of wildlife and their habitats; and
(d) to initiate or support scientific studies on the conservation of biological diversity
4. What is biological resources?
Answer : Biological resources are the biologically derived renewable and non-renewable
resources that ecosystems provide. They include certain minerals, plants, animals and all of
their derivatives such as genetic information. Biological resources refer to the living landscape ;
the plants, animals, and other aspects of nature that occur on farmland, forests, and other
natural lands.
5.What is Biosafety ?
Answer: According to chapter III CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES
of RA 9147 in Section 16. Biosafety - All activities dealing on genetic engineering and
pathogenic organisms in the Philippines, as well as activities requiring the importation,
introduction, field release and breeding of organisms that are potentially harmful to man and
the environment shall be reviewed in accordance with the biosafety guidelines ensuring public
welfare and the protection and conservation of wildlife and their habitats.
6. What is meant by Endangered Species ? Give one example in the Philippines ?
Answer: Endangered species” refers to species or subspecies that is not critically endangered
but whose survival in the wild is unlikely if the causal factors continue operating;. One example
of endangered species here in Philippines is the “ Philippine crocodile” one of the most
endangered crocodilian species, with estimates of wild populations fewer than 100. Their major
threats include hunting and habitat destruction.
7. What is meant by Endemic Species? Give one example in the Philippines.
Answer : Endemic species” Means species or subspecies which is naturally occurring and found
only within specific areas in the country. One example of Endemic Species is the “ Philippine
Eagle” this Species is endemic and found on only four islands in the Philippines: Leyte, Luzon,
Mindanao, and Samar. The majority of the population is found on Mindanao.
8. What is meant by exotic species ? Give one example in the Philippines.
Answer: “Exotic species” means species or subspecies which do not naturally occur in the
country; One example of the Exotic species is the “ golden apple snail” (Pomacea canaliculata)
is a freshwater snail listed among the top 100 worst invasive species worldwide and a noted
agricultural and quarantine pest that causes great economic losses.
9. Define Wildlife Laundering .
Answer : Wildlife traffickers exploit weaknesses in the financial and non-financial sectors, to
move, hide and launder their proceeds, enabling further wildlife crimes and damaging financial
integrity.
10. Enumerate (2) possible consequences violations of RA 9147 .
Answer : (a) imprisonment of a minimum of six (6) years and one (1) day to twelve (12) years
and/or a fine of One hundred thousand pesos (P100,000.00) to One million pesos
(P1,000,000.00), if inflicted or undertaken against species listed as critical;
(b) imprisonment of four (4) and one (1) day to six (6) years and/or a fine of Fifty thousand
pesos (P50,000.00) to Five hundred thousand pesos (P500,000.00) if inflicted or undertaken
against endangered species;
