Analysis
1. Rosa Hubermann loves Liesel, but she is very strict and has high expectations for her
daughter. Though she calls Liesel names, makes her do chores, and disciplines her harshly,
she does love her. Liesel loves her mother as well but is not as close with her as she is
with her father.
2. Liesel’s brother dies on the train.
3. Rudy, who is a huge fan of Jesse Owens, decides to paint himself black with charcoal. He
then sneaks out of the house to the Hubert Oval and runs in front of an “imaginary”
crowd. Eventually his father angrily retrieves him and brings him home by his ear.
4. Papa asks Liesel to read, but she has difficulty reading any of the words. So, Papa gets
some sandpaper and teaches her the alphabet using letters and pictures.
