Regulation

AMC 20-27 (Acceptable Mean of Compliance)

This document addresses and defines airworthiness and operational criteria related to RNAV
systems approved for RNP APCH based on GNSS with or without vertical guidance based on
APV(*) BARO-VNAV.
Compliance with this AMC does not, by itself, constitute an operational authorisation to conduct
RNP APCH operations.
Aircraft operators should apply to their national authority.

Since this AMC has been harmonised with other RNP implementation and operational criteria
outside of Europe, i.e. USA/FAA, it is expected to facilitate interoperability and ease the effort in
obtaining operational authorisation by operators.

* APV: Approach Procedure with Vertical guidance

Regulation

ATR 72-600 AFM (Limitations)

1 – GENERAL

The FMS Thales 220 in association with one or two GPS TOPSTAR T200NG LPV, complies with
Perfomance Based Navigation (PBN) requirements for LNAV/VNAV (and APVBaro—VNAV approach)
requirements in accordance with AMC20-27.

Single or dual GPS configuration is approved for RNAV(GNSS) LNAV/VNAV(an APV Baro-VNAV approach)
provided:

 The crew respects the published DA.

 The published approach procedure is referenced to WGS 84 coordinates.
 Before starting the approach, crew checks that at least one FMS and one GNSS is operating and no GPS
INTEG message is displayed on ND.

 For final approach APPR annunciation is displayed in green on PFDs (HSI); also, lateral and vertical
deviations are displayed with black background.

NOTE: Pilots intending to conduct a LNAV/VNAV procedure must be on the leg at least 2Nm before FAF
otherwise the system will not switch to APPR mode (RNP and lateral deviation scale will remain at 1Nm)
Regulation

 RNAV(GNSS) LNAV/VNAV approaches are performed only if a LNAV/VNAV approach procedure is available
at destination or at alternate airport.

 For dualGPSconfiguration:
No crew action for RNAV(GNSS) LNAV/VNAV approaches in case of a single GPS loss.

 For single GPS configuration:

RNAV(GNSS) LNAV/VNAV approaches must be aborted in case of GPS loss unless visual
references are acquired and can be maintained up to landing.

 Temperature compensation function must be activated whenever temperature at destination is outside the
published temperature range.

 VNAV performances were demonstrated for approach with FPA up to 4,2°.

 VTA (Vertical Track Alert): indications flashing are a reminder for pilot to select ALT SEL correctly to fly the FMS
vertical profile. (e.g.:1 minute before reaching: TOD without lower ALT SEL selection, a STEP TO) -- available
in CRUISE

 VPCA (Vertical Path Change Alert): indications flashing announce an A/C pitch change due to VNAV guidance.

VNAV Policy

• Whenever LNAV is engaged, in all flight phases including approach and go-around, it is
recommended to use VNAV
• VNAV IAS, VNAV PATH, VNAV VS or V-FP as appropriate

• Exceptions
• LOC only approach
• When forbidden by local regulations
• If descending below Transition Level without AIRFIELD pressure
• Early descent, if descending before TOD-5 minutes

• Temperature compensation must be activated

• When proposed by FMS or
• Whenever outside published temperature limits

• When leaving LNAV mode, eg. Radar heading, deselect VNAV with VS in descent or IAS
in climb before selecting any other lateral mode.

99
EVENTS
PBN Navigation Policy

 Without failures, the following additional capabilites are provided with

VNAV option:

• RNP APCH – RNAV(GNSS) approach to LNAV/VNAV minima

• No credit is allowed for VNAV option for other types of non-precision
approach

EVENTS
PBN Navigation Policy

ABNORMAL situations

 In case of loss or unavailability of VNAV or V-FP, no particular action or

communication is required. Of course for approach, minima for LNAV without
VDEV credit must be used

 In case of loss or unavailability of LNAV, VNAV is not available

 In case of loss or deselection of VNAV (for example radar heading, downgrade to

PITCH HOLD), ensure compliance with published altitude constraints and flight
profile. It may be necessary to modify ALT SEL and/or IAS/VS target

 In case of inability to maintain altitude constraints and/or speed constraints using

VNAV, inform ATC or change vertical mode

 In case of TOO STEEP PATH AHEAD it will be necessary to inform ATC or

change vertical mode.

After take-off

 Weather avoidance: ensure correct altitude constraint and new vertical mode
selected before selecting HDG SEL

 Speed constraints: may be entered in FMS or using manual speed, VNAV IAS will
respect speed auto or manual

 Altimeter setting: STD should not be set until all altitude constraints based on QNH
are passed

 Altitude constraints: will automatically be converted between altitude and FL

according to coupled side altimeter setting, however refer to above policy

Before descent – descent

 FMS Setting
Arrival and Approach must be extracted from database; NO WAYPOINT INSERTION
OR MODIFICATION OF LATERAL OR VERTICAL FLIGHT PLAN ALLOWED.

 Heading changes
Ensure ALT SEL and vertical mode are compatible with heading changes

Approach – Before Landing – General Guidelines

 Failure or loss of VNAV prior to commencing approach can result in rebrief for an
alternate procedure and LNAV/VNAV minima must not be used

 Any failure which can be resolved before FAF/P, approach may be continued

 Any failure after FAF/P, go-around before reversion to alternate procedure

Go-around - Extraction

 In case of normal go-around, initial settings:

ILS, LOC, LPV, LP = HDG SEL+IAS, when possible, NAV SRC FM and LNAV/VNAV
with final go-around selected in ALT SEL

 All other approaches = VNAV with final go-around selected in ALT SEL

 If go-around due to navigation discrepancy, initially HDG SEL IAS, remain HDG SEL
and follow conventional NAVAID until discrepancy resolved. Ensure ALT SEL is in
accordance with altitude constraints

 In case of autopilot or flight director loss, LDEV and VDEV or conventional NAVAID
may be followed in raw data if necessary
