Some Major Challenges Faced by Civil Engineering Professional in the

Execution of their Profession.

By Franklin Ngosong Tougwa
One of the main challenges faced by the civil engineering profession in developing countries is
sustainability of the building . The challenges are seen to be sustainability of construction, improving
safety at the worksite, adequate management of groundwater, and the monitoring and improving the
deteriorating poor infrastructure.
These problems include waste management, pollution, analysis and design of transportation
systems, development of water resources, and the design, construction, and rehabilitation of built facilities
like dams, bridges, buildings, and freeways. For example, a civil engineer should design and supervise
construction of buildings, highways, airports, tunnels, and water systems. Civil engineers are held in this
societal duty of maintaining and properly adapting structures we rely upon in daily life, as well as being
involved in making sure infrastructure is adaptable to the challenges posed by natural disasters, human
population growth, and climate change.
They plan, design, and oversee the construction and renovation of new buildings, railroad and
road projects, bridges, irrigation and sewage systems, dams, and other physical structures. Most of the
civil engineers working hours are spent outside on the job sites, monitoring buildings and projects, and
solving problems related to the projects. Engineers must be familiar with the details of building
construction, including the electric and plumbing systems, as well as the function of their operation.
Graduates apply their skills and knowledge in the building of transportation systems, utilities,
buildings, dams, public health and environmental systems, irrigation, industrial facilities, municipal, and
community works, as well as surveying, mapping, and supporting design in the field of engineering.
Added to the strong mathematical foundation is a broad-based appreciation for fundamentals of materials
science, architecture, water and environment, soil, structure, and transportation systems engineering. Civil
engineering has undergone a number of changes over time, ranging from the introduction of new
materials like reinforced concrete, to the advent of computer programs to aid calculation or infrastructure
design.
The purpose of a bachelors degree program in civil engineering is to prepare graduates as civil
engineers to address present and future needs in societys infrastructural and ecological realms. The fourth
year includes the capstone of professional practice and design experience, elective courses in one of the
civil engineering subfields (or subfields)—most are combinations of engineering sciences and design
experiences—and elective courses that help students develop appreciation of the professional engineers
role in society.
Implementation is the point at which the work begins, with many civil engineers spending
significant time on the job site, checking on progress, and coordinating the entire build. What problems
there are generally few, suggesting their drawings are fine, and they are in full coordination with work
from architects and MEP engineers.
The fast growing population in the developing nations call for more infrastructures to be put in
place. There is need for maintaining the already existing ones, which are degrading. This is the duty of the
civil engineering professionals but they are face with a lot of challenges. The problem of sustainable
construction, improvement construction site safety, proper management of groundwater and the
monitoring and improvement of poor and degrading infrastructure are seen as some of the major
challenges.
In short, the building industry needs to keep up with current trends which aim at lessening
pollution, and that will require both using more sustainable materials, using cleaner energy, and new
building techniques which allow civil engineering to lessen its environmental footprint.
