ENGR 4426 – Air Pollution Control

Assignment 1
Due: February 28th, 2023

Question 1
A chemical manufacturing plant produces a new bio-plastic in Country X. As a
product of the processing, two pollutants are released – particulate matter A and
chemical B.

Data is collected at the exit of the reactor and reported using the attached
spreadsheet.

Assuming that particulate matter A can be removed from the exiting stream using a
scrubber, and chemical B can be removed using an adsorption system. What is the
required efficiency of both units to meet the regulatory standards for Country X
given below?

Regulations for the emission of Particulate Matter A

Related to operations used for the production of bio-products, Particulate Matter A
should not exceed the following levels:

- Emissions must never exceed 1.0 kg per tonne of product

- The hourly rolling average emission rate must not exceed 0.8 kg of A per tonne of
product
- Total emissions of A per day must not exceed 5 kg
Regulations of the emission of Chemical B
Common to all industrial operations, Chemical B is a controlled substance and must
be monitored in 15 minute increments. Emission rates must be controlled such that:

- Emission rates must never exceed 0.2 kg of B per 15 minute increment

- The rolling average emission rate over a two-hour period must never exceed 0.9 kg
of B per tonne of product

Question 2
Using the provided excel spreadsheet (last two tabs), or by hand if you wish,
calculate the required horsepower for the fan in each of the two systems outlined in
the attached sketches (next page).
Question 3
A new coal supplier sent you a sample from two separate mine sites, with the
ultimate analysis of the dry coal given below:
Component Coal A (%) Coal B
C 75 77
H 5 6
O 10 5
N 2 1
Ash 8 11

How much energy is released from perfectly combusting 1kg of each coal (C and H)
under standard conditions?

How much air is required to burn that 1 kg? Assume that the system is operated
with 40% excess air, measured at 35°C, 1 atm, and 70% relative humidity. (Note: the
saturation pressure of water vapour at 35°C is 5.63 kPa)

Based on the above analysis, what coal would you recommend? What are 3 other
factors that may need to be considered for this decision?

Question 4

A gas mixture of 80% methane and 20% ethane is burned in an industrial furnace,
assume that each are 95% completely combusted. Assume that the furnace utilizes
35% excess air, what is the composition of off-gas at standard conditions?
Question 5

An industrial oven you are tasked to design is supposed to burn coke (assume pure
carbon) as the fuel source, and your task is to examine preheating the air for its
effect on the flame temperature produced in the system and the relative cost.

Based on the current design, all inlets to the system are to be at STP and the
combustion will be completed with 20% excess air.

The energy balance for the flame system has been determined through previous
testing that the energy loss to the surroundings (not including off-gas) is a function
of temperature, specifically: 0.001T2 + 0.2T (kcal, where T is in °C).

Hint: do this question on a basis of 1kg of coke.

A. What is the adiabatic flame temperature for the combustion of coke under these
conditions?
B. What is the actual flame temperature in the operation?
C. Assuming the following:
- the cost of preheating the air is based on an electricity cost of $0.103/kWh,
and the heater is 100% efficient
- additional revenue is tied to operational temperature (up to a maximum
operating temperature of 1800°C) according to the equation:
-0.00001T2 + 0.03154T ($, where T is in °C)
What is the optimum preheating temperature to maximize the additional profit of
the operation?

Given:
Heat of combustion of carbon = 7834 [kcal kg-1]
Specific heat of N2 = 0.302 + 0.000022T [kcal m-3 °C-1]
Specific heat of O2 = 0.302 + 0.000022T [kcal m-3 °C-1]
Specific heat of CO2 = 0.406 + 0.000090T [kcal m-3 °C-1]
