Assignment (Week 5): Limit and Continuity

Instruction: Answer all the questions.

1. For the limit

lim (x3 − 3x + 4) = 6
x→2

illustrate Precision Definition of a Limit by finding values of δ that correspond to ε = 0.2 and ε = 0.1.
2. Find a number δ such that if |x − 3| < δ, then |5x − 15| < ε, where ε = 0.1.

3. Prove the statement using the ε, δ definition of a limit.

4 x2 − 2x − 8
(a) lim (3 − x) = −5 (b) lim =6
x→10 5 x→4 x−4
(c) lim x2 = 0 (d) lim (x2 − 4x + 5) = 1
x→0 x→2

4. Given that limx→3 x2 = 9. Prove that one possible choice of δ is δ = min {2, ε/8}.

5. Prove, using Precise Definition of an Infinite Limit, that lim = ∞.
x→−3 (x + 3)4
6. Use continuity to evaluate the limit.

(a) lim x 20 − x2 (b) lim x2 tan x
x→2 x→π/4

7. Find the numbers at which f is discontinuous. At which of these numbers is f continuous from the right, from
the left, or neither? Sketch the graph of f .

x
 if x < −1 1 + x
 if x ≤ 0
(a) f (x) = x if − 1 ≤ x < 1 (b) f (x) = 2 − x if 0 < x ≤ 2

1/x if x ≥ 1 (x − 2)2 if x > 2

8. For what value of the constant c is the function f continuous on (−∞, ∞)?
(
cx2 + 2x if x < 2
f (x) =
x3 − cx if x ≥ 2

9. Use the Intermediate Value Theorem to show that there is a root of the given equation in the specified interval.

(a) x4 + x − 3 = 0, (1, 2) (b) 3 x = 1 − x, (0, 1)
