What This Module is About

This module takes up the effects of the environment on the life

cycle of organisms. Our environment affects the life of living things.
When there are changes in the environment, the organisms are
directly affected.

2
The effects of the environment on living things may be good or it
may also be bad on the organism.

As you go along with this module, you will be able to describe

the effects of the organisms to the environment.

Notes to the Teacher

Dear Teacher,
This is a self-paced module with various
activities to be done at home by the learners.
Clear and careful instructions must be given
to the learners to ensure safety and avoid
misconceptions in performing the activities.

i
i
What I Need to Know

Living things live in an environment with the following

components: air, water, sunlight, soil, and temperature. These

3
components are what we call the abiotic factors. Changes in abiotic
factors will always have an effect on the lives of the living things
growing and living in an ecosystem.

The life of an organism is a cycle. It is a series of changes that

take place in the life of an organism from the beginning of life until the
end. The stages in a life cycle may differ from one kind of organism
to the other.

Changes in the abiotic components in the ecosystem may affect

any of the stages of the organisms.

Learning Objectives:

1. Name the different abiotic components in an ecosystem.

2. Give the importance of abiotic components in an ecosystem to
living things.
3. Describe how living things affect the abiotic components in an
ecosystem.
4. Describe the effects of the environment to the life cycle of
organisms.

To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:

• Take your time in reading the lessons carefully.

• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and

exercises diligently.

Lesson Effect of Air on the Life

1 Cycle of Organisms

Living things constantly interact with their environment. Each kind of

environment is made up of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living things)
components that interact and depend on one another in different
ways.
One of the abiotic components is air. Biotic (living things) components
like human, animals, and plants need air to survive. Air is made up of
essential gases that living things need to endure. These include
oxygen and carbon dioxide..

Importance of Space in the
2 Life Cycle of Organisms

Living things need space, not the outer space but actually an
actual space to live and breed. Overcrowding, especially in animals
can result in stress and diseases. Living thins things need enough
space just like humans do.

What’s In

Quick Check!
Directions: Below are statements about air. Write T if the statement is
a true and F if it is false. Write your answers in your
Activity Sheet or Science Activity notebook.

___1. Air pollution is harmful to all living things.

___2. Smog makes breathing difficult.
___3. Living organisms can live even without air.
___4. When oxygen is not available, animals can use nitrogen.
___5. Common pollutants in the air come from the burning of
gasoline, diesel and oils by cars and factories.

14
What’s New

Let’s Examine!
Directions: Write Yes if it shows a good space for a living organism
and No if it shows an overcrowding. Write your answers in
your Answer Sheet or Science Activity notebook.

____2. A corn plant surrounded by grasses.
____3. A dog that can play freely around in the backyard.
____4. Four puppies born to a dog with six nipples.
____5. Five monggo plants growing beside each other.

What is It

Learning Circuit
Plants, animals, and humans need enough living space in
order to survive and multiply. When there are too many
organisms in a given space, overcrowding occurs.
Overpopulation or overcrowding is not good to the health of the
organism. Lack of enough space will result to the following:
1. Lack of food - when there are too many of the same kind of
animal or plants competing for one food
source.
 organisms are not healthy
 many will die of starvation or diseases
2. Wandering – overpopulation results to lack of food. Some
animals will go to other places in search for
food. Outside their habitat, may be harmed
or may harm others.

3. Disease – overcrowding may spread diseases faster.

Guide Questions:
15
1. What resource is lacking if there is overcrowding of space?
2. Why diseases spread fast when there is overcrowding?
3. What makes animals wander to other places when there is
overcrowding?

What’s more?

growing around it. Study the drawing and answer the
questions below. Write your answers in your Activity

Effect of Sunlight on the
3 Life Cycle of Organisms

The sun is the source of all energy, heat and light. The amount
of sunlight available in a place determines what living thing can
survive there. All plants use sunlight to make food in a process call
photosynthesis. They store the food in their leaves and in the fruits.
The energy stored in the plants flows or is transferred to the animals
that eat these plants.

Animals and humans need fresh water for our organs to function.
We get water from drinking it and from our food. Water makes our
bodies absorb vitamins and minerals from the food we eat. It also
helps to regulate our body temperature.

Water also provides a home for water or aquatic plants and

animals. It also provides a breeding ground or temporary home for
animals which spend part of their lives in water like frogs and some
