3. Familiarize yourself with the different technological/online tools which can facilitate
effective communication; and
4. List down common cross-cultural barriers and communication strategies that overcome
those barriers.
Digital natives
- Individuals who were born and raised in a world of gadgets, computers, and internet.
Online communication tools
- Is a form of communication, using the various channels available on the Internet to
communicate and interact online to relay a message to a targeted audience.
- The ultimate goal of the online communication is generally increasing the visibility of a
good or service or enhancing the image of an organization, and sometimes it is just
entertaining communicating and having fun.
Roles of online communication tools
- Communication tools handle the capturing, storing, presenting and communicating the
information, usually written but increasingly including audio and video as well.
- Interactive tools handle mediated interactions between a pair or group of users.
- They focus on establishing and maintaining a connection among users, facilitating the
mechanics of conversation and talk.
Kinds of Online Communication Tools or Software
A. Instant messaging
- Instant messaging application allows one to communicate with another person over a
network in real time, in relative privacy.
- One can add friends to a contact or “buddy” list by entering the person's email
address or messenger ID.
- If the person is online, their name will typically be listed as available for chat.
Clicking on their name will activate a chat window with space to write to the other
person, as well as read their reply.
B. Electronic mail (e-mail)
- A computer-based system for exchanging messages through mail servers.
- Is a store-and-forward system: A message delivery system in which messages are
forwarded between servers and then stored on those servers until they are picked up.

- Online chat technologies allow users to join chat rooms and communicate with many
people at once, publicly.
- Users may join a pre-existing chat room or create a new one about any topic.
- Once inside, you may type messages that everyone else in the room can read, as well
as respond to messages from others.
- Often there is a steady stream of people entering and leaving. Whether you are in
another person's chat room or one you've created yourself, you are generally free to
invite others online to join you in that room
D. Forum
- A web-based discussion and advice- sharing site; more feature-rich type of
newsgroup
- Users register on the web site so that their posts will be identifiable
- A forum thread is a post along with all the comments to it
- Many companies have tech support forums for their products
E. Internet forum
- These allow users to post a “topic” for others to review.
- Other users can view the topic and post their own comments in a linear fashion, one
after the other.
- Most forums are public, allowing anybody to sign up at any time. A few are private,
gated communities where new members must pay a small fee to join.
F. Blogs and Microblogs
- Short for web logs, are like online journals for a particular person.
- The owner will post a message periodically, allowing others to comment.
- Topics often include the owner's daily life, views on politics or a particular subject
important to them
a) Blog
- A web page containing personal experiences and opinions, with posts listed
most-recent-first
- Blogging has also become fashionable in business settings by companies who
use such as IBM Lotus Connections
b) Blog platform
- A web server that hosts the blogs of individuals, either free or for a small fee.
Examples: WordPress, Typepad, and Blogge
c) Microblog
- A service that allows the posting of short messages. A status update service
such as Twitter, limited to a very few characters per post. Unlike , microblogs
can be seen by anyone and can be commented on by anyone
G. Newsgroups
- Newsgroup-An online discussion group; predates the web, forerunners of web-
based forums that are popular today
a) Usenet
- A global distributed discussion system of servers hosting public newsgroups
b) Newsreader

- An application used by people to read Usenet articles, or an email client that


supports newsgroups; organizes incoming messages from newsgroups and
allows users to read and respond to them
- NNTP (network news transport protocol)transports news articles between
news servers and clients reading and posting articles
H. Social network services
- These allow people to come together online around shared interests, hobbies or
causes. For example, some sites provide dating services where users post personal
profiles, locations, ages, gender, etc and are able to search for a partner.
- Other services enable business networking and social event meetups
- An Internet-based system enabling users to interact in real-time and by using
messaging programs
- Umbrella term for sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+
- User creates a profile and posts status updates, writings, photos, and forwards
- Some services use tags, or hashtags (#) which are searchable labels that can be added
to posted content allow other people to find like-minded users
- Some social network are specialized (Instagram for photos, Vine for video, Reddit for
news, YouTube for video-sharing)
I. VoIP Voice over IP (VoIP)
- Is used to make voice calls via the Internet
- Turns the voice message into data packets and sends them as if they were other
Internet data
- IP, short for Internet protocol, is used to identify individual devices that are connected
to the Internet and to route calls between them.
- Skype and Truphone are popular VoIP apps
- Some IM clients also allow you to make voice calls
- Apps like Skype and Facetime also allow video chat
J. Videoconferencing
- Is feature-rich, group video chat
- Can include computer application sharing, voice, text chatting, and document
collaboration
- Uses the same underlying protocols as VoIP uses, but it requires much more bandwidth.
- Enables multiple people to video chat at the same time

Characteristics of each online communication tool


1. Email
- Used when a quick response is not essential
- Good for formal messages
- Provides permanent records
- Instant messaging
- Quick answers, conveying short messages quickly
2. Social networking (personal)

- Useful for informing friends what is happening in your life


- Good for posting photos and videos of recent events you’ve been involved in
3. Social networking (business)
- Increasingly used for advertising
- Many social networking sites are dedicated to matching job-seekers with employers
4. Blogs
- Expressing your personal opinions and providing updates about yourself
5. Microblogs
- Very short summary updates you want existing followers to see
6. Forums
- Discussing topics of shared interest
- Communicating as part of a community
7. VoIP calls
- Chatting with friends or business associates
- Keeping in touch with families
- Required a reliable high-speed web connection
8. Videoconferencing
- Appropriate mainly for the workplace or schools
- Allows groups of people to interact visually
