In the triangle PQR, M is the midpoint of PQ. Given that QR = 5.3 cm, ∠PQR = 90°
and ∠QRP = 56°, calculate ∠MRQ. [3]

SOLUTION

a)
i. Consider △ABC

AB = 6.47 cm

ii. Consider △ACD

Three points, A, Y and E, are on level ground. Y is the foot of a vertical flagpole YX. S
is 40 m due south of Y and E is due east of Y.
i) Angle of elevation of X from S is 15°. Calculate the height of the flagpole. [2]
ii) The bearing of E from S is 037°. Calculate the distance ES. [3]
iii) Calculate the shortest distance from Y to the line ES. [3]
iv) Calculate the angle of elevation of X from E. [4]

SOLUTION

i) Consider △XYS [consider XYS and XSY]

XY

In the diagram, C represents the foot of a vertical tower CT. the points A, B and C are
on horizontal ground, where ∠CAB = 90°, AC = 70 m and BC = 100 m.
Given that the angle of elevation of T from A is 26°, calculate
a) the height of the tower,
b) ∠ABC,
c) The angle of depression of B from T. [6]

SOLUTION

a)
CT
i. Tan ∠TAC = AC [to find height of tower, consider △ACT and tan∠TAC]

∴ CT = 70 tan 26°

A ship sails 8 km from P to Q. it then sails 5 km from Q to R on a bearing of 075°.

i) Given that ∠PQR = 140°, calculate
a) the bearing of Q from P,
b) how far Q is east of P,
c) The distance PR. [7]

ii) The ship finally sails from R to a position T, which is due north of Q.
Given that ∠QTR = 40°, calculate
a) the distance RT,
b) the shortest distance between the point Q and the ship as it sails from R
to T. [5]

SOLUTION

i)

49° S

5 R
Q 75°

140°
8

a) ∠PQT = 360° - 140° - 75° = 145°

∠NPQ = 180° - ∠PQT [∠s between // lines = 180° – 145° = 35°]

∴ bearing of Q from P = 035°

NQ
b) sin ∠NPQ =
PQ
NQ
sin 35° = 8

NQ = 8 sin 35° = 4.589

∴ Q is 4.59 km east of P.

c) (PR)2 = (PQ)2 + (QR)2 − 2(PQ)(QR) cos ∠PQR [by cosine rule]

= 82 + 52 − 2(8)(5) cos 140°

= 150.2836
∴ PR = 12.259
= 12.3 Km (3 s.f)

ii.
RT QR
a) = sin 40° [by using sin e rule]
sin 75°

∴ 𝑅𝑇 = sin 40° × sin 75°

= 7.514
= 7.51 km (3 s.f)

b) ∠QRT = 180° – 75° – 40° = 65°

𝑄𝑆
sin ∠QRT = 𝑄𝑅

QS = 5 sin 65° = 4.532

∴ the shortest distance is 4.53 km
