Peculiarities of spindle drives

The spindle tape is a power transmission element, used as an

alternative to the tangential belt in the yarn processing industry:

Peculiarities of spindle drives

A spindle tape usually drives One tangential belt usually drives a

less flexible are polyamide belts.

What is “better”?

Spindle belt drive OR Tangential belt drive

Both systems have advantages and disadvantages. It is at the discretionary

of the machine manufacturers to choose the one or the other system.

Habasit is the leading supplier of spindle tapes and tangential belts, therefore
we do not give any opinion in this matter.

Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 8

Peculiarities of spindle drives

When a yarn breaks and has to be rejoined,

the spindle is stopped during the splicing
procedure (approx. 30 sec).

The spindle tape is continuously running

over the stopped whirl and drives the other
spindles with the nominal speed (usually
15,000 to 20,000 rpm).
Stopped spindle

Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 9

Peculiarities of spindle drives

Demand on the spindle tape while a spindle is stopped:

Minimum drop of speed of the running spindles

… in order to continue producing uniform yarn quality

 Low heat generation

… in order to prevent the tapes from early failure

contradiction!
Spindle stopped
Requirements:
Low coefficient of friction on the whirl side for the stopped spindle
High coefficient of friction on the whirl side for the running spindles

High coefficient of friction on the driving pulley side

Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 10

Peculiarities of spindle drives

Demand on the spindle tape after the stopped spindle is released:

Accelerate the released spindle to the nominal

speed in the shortest possible time
… in order to continue producing uniform yarn quality

Spindle released
Requirements:
High coefficient of friction on the whirl side
High coefficient of friction on the driving pulley side

Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 11

Peculiarities of spindle drives

Low coefficient of friction required on the whirl side when spindles are
stopped, high coefficient of friction required on the same side to
accelerate and drive the spindles with constant high speed – a clear
contradiction!
Habasit spindle tapes fulfill this almost impossible task in perfection
Market leader Habasit was already setting the standards for spindle tapes
decades ago and is still highly appreciated by our customers around the
world
Habasit offers a very broad range of spindle tapes with the right product
for every customer and every requirement

TS-5 and HS-5

The ultimate and mostly used spindle tapes in the world!
The tapes of choice for applications with braked spindles.

TS-10
Specially absorbent polyamide fabric on both sides makes it ideal for
operations where humidity is present. Only suitable for braked spindles if
humidity is present!

TS-55
TS-5 with a thin polyamide traction layer, therefore thicker, stronger and
higher k1%-value. Heats up faster than TS-5 if it runs over braked spindles.

HS-5 and HS-55

Economically priced alternative to TS-5 and TS-55, with similar design and
properties.

Selection of the optimal spindle tape

Note: TS- and HS- tapes are the first choice for the use on machines
with “1 jockey pulley”.

Reason: In the “1 jockey pulley” drive, the spindle tape is not only 90°
twisted, but is also to a certain extent laterally forced:

The Thermofix joint of TS- and Lateral force combined with

HS- tapes withstands lateral twist may lead to reduced
force without influencing the service life of the Flexproof
service life negatively joint on W-8 and W-16.

 No No

Why? Tape side with high friction on driving pulley!

Tape side with low friction on spindle whirl side!
Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 39
How to install spindle tapes

The correct installation of the spindle tape is of paramount importance for

trouble-free operation, high yarn quality and long service life.

Consequences if the tapes are not correctly installed:

High friction and heat generation during spindle stop will lead to spindle
tape failure.
High friction during spindle stop is leading to slippage on driving pulley
and reduction of spindle rpm on the 3 remaining spindles which are still
in operation.
This reduction of spindle rpm is leading to reduced yarn twist, reduced
yarn quality, reduced yarn strength and reduced machine efficiency in
the twisting and weaving section due to increased yarn breakages.

Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 40

How to install spindle tapes

Note:
Do not use different types of spindle tapes on the same machine!

Reason: Different position of the neutral layer leads to unequal number

of twists in the yarn quality defect!

Influence of the neutral layer on spindle speed

Introduction
Often different spindle speeds are found after a change-over from one type
of spindle tape or spindle tape brand to another type or make.
This is not due to different coefficients of friction nor due to slippage!
The true reason is the difference of the position of the neutral layer:
TS-5 W-8 Other type
Whirl side
Neutr. layer

Driving side

Because the neutral layer has a slightly different position in

different types of spindle tapes, the actual spindle speed will
differ when changing from one type of spindle tape or spindle
tape brand to another type or make.

Increase of spindle speed (example) + 1.64 %
Habasit I Product Knowledge of Spindle Tapes I René Seiler I May 2011 45
Influence of the neutral layer on spindle speed

The change from a polyamide spindle tape to W-8 will slightly change the
spindle rpm due to the different position of the neutral layer.

If for example TS-5 is replaced by W-8, the spindle speed will increase by
about 1.6 % (depending on the whirl diameter).

The same effect will take place when changing a competitor spindle tape to
the state-of-the art W-8 spindle tape (speed increase usually in the range of
1 to 2%).
Note: The difference in spindle speed does NOT affect the production
volume (kg/h), but the number of twists in the yarn (T/m).

Due to the fact that a higher number of twists is usually not required, the
input speed (rpm of the driving pulleys) can be reduced accordingly.
This has also an energy saving effect.

Habasit is the leading supplier of spindle tapes. A broad range of spindle

tapes provides the right product for every customer and every requirement.

Due to their special design and used materials the tapes have excellent
features, e.g. for applications with braked spindles.

TS-5 and HS-5 are the mostly used spindle tapes in the world! They are
very resilient. Extraordinary service life can be reached.

The polyester spindle tapes W-8 and W-16 are the perfect solution for high-
