Vaccination & Drenching Program of Livestock in Kohistan

District Kohistan Profile:


The population of Kohistan District according to 1998 census report is 472,579 with an average annual growth rate of 0.09%. Kohistan comprises of three Tehsils (Dassu, Palas and Pattan). Dassu has the highest population of 184,746 persons, with 102,800 male and 81,880 female. Tehsil Palas comprises of 165,613 people, with 92,330 male and 73,283 female. Tehsil Pattan has the total population of 122,244 with 66,746 male and 55,465 female respectively.

SDF Team Members during the Survey

The total area of the district is 7492 sq.km with population density of 63.1 persons per square kilometer. The Average household size is 6.4 persons. According to 1998 census report the whole District consists of rural population. The District Headquarter (Dassu) and the Sub-divisional Headquarters (Pattan & Palas) have the characteristics of urban areas but none of them have been declared as urban area so far. The disabled persons constituted 1.05% of the total population of the district, among them 0.47% are female and 0.5 8% are male.

Justification and Introduction of the Area


As district Kohistan is one of the deserving and backward district of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa on the basis of some social, physical and natural limits. By this way Kohistan is subject to different hurdles like, being the most hilly area social barriers are still on its peaks, being one of the most far sited area is a little bit neglected, and third is seasonal barrier are also one of A view of Vaccination of small and large animals LEP Unit Salik Development Foundation

3 the main reason of its backwardness. The recent floods improve this pity condition of District Kohistan. The second tragedy which worsened the situation more is the inaccessibility to the flood affected area due to sliding and roads damages. In this scenario Most of humanitarian organizations were unable to reach for rehabilitation process. The aftermath of flood devastation brought a lot of miseries to the district of kohistan and affected every segment of life. Being a hilly area district kohistan agriculture and livestock is the only major source of earning. In this regard due to flood and other natural barriers agriculture source disturbed and in the consequences the livestock also tremendously disturbed. Due to recent winter season and heavy snowfall livestock suffered from lack of animal feed which caused different type of diseases in animals. Most of the people have no sources to feed and cure their animals. This type of miseries cause low income and increase the ratio of poverty. Due to above facts observance Salik Foundation with the collaboration Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund decided to launch Vaccination drenching program in district of kohistan.

Survey Analysis
In this regard Salik Foundation conducted a survey to draw out the ratio of diseases which are common. After the conducting the survey the analysis and report showed that most of the animals area affected from H.S(Hemorrhagic Septicemia(Urdu, GHAL GOTA in local language its called GHUNDARI) , Deworming and Entortoremia, SDF team vaccinating small animals during campaign diseases. These diseases are very common. The sing and symbol of Haemorhagic disease are temperature upto105 / 107, Salivation. The death ratio in this disease is up to 90%. The second most common issue with animals is worms, these worms are intestinal, lungs worms, Tap warms, Round warm are commonly born in lungs etc. signs and symbols of this disease are rough skin coat, low in meat and milk, reproductive deficiency and mortality ratio is 40%. To eradicate the stated diseases vaccination and drenching campaign is decided to be launched in Union Council of Dassu and Komila. For the prevention of stated diseases H.S. Vaccine, Nil zan plus, zainil, Systormax.

Opening Ceremony of Vaccination Campaign


The ceremony was started with recitation of Holy Quran. Aslam Khan recited few verses from Holy Quran. After recitation Admin Officer of Salik Foundation Jamal Shah invited President Salik Foundation, Mr. Janzab Salik for introductory address. After the address of president Salik Foundation, ACO, district kohistan and EDO agriculture expressed their view points about the program and they appreciated the vaccination program of salik Foundation they also thanked Pakistan Poverty

5 Alleviation Fund (PPAF) for such valuable activities. He further said that through this way the poor people of kohistan can be developed as most of the people belong to this profession and this is the only source of their income.

Area Selection Criteria.


Four points are selected on the basis of its vulnerability because most of the people migrate their families with their animals to the valleys summer season and in winter season these migrated People come back from valleys. So those area were selected where most of the people shifted to valleys. So in this regard in Union Council Dassu(1)Cheragh Abad, (2) Koshi (3)Louter (4) Logro were selected and in Union Council Komila (1)Kas Bala, (2)Kas Payein, (3)Zaal (4)Rango were selected. So the said areas are easily accessible for the people to bring easily their animals.

Starting of Activities
1) Total five veterinary doctors with twelve vaccinators participated in the vaccination campaign. President Salik Foundation Jan zeb Salik vaccinated the first animal in the presence of ACO and EDO agriculture district kohistan. In Dassu Cheragh Abad total 1734 animals are vaccinated in which there are 1262 small and 472 were large animals respectively. Community members also help and participated in vaccination campaign. 2) The union council of komila Kas Payien was selected. In the area the vaccination and drenching were completed. The area of Kas payien is also a congested area. Total eleven hundred and sixty seven 1167 small and large animals were vaccinated. The total figure includes nine hundred and sixty 960 small and two hundred and seven 207 large

6 animals. 3) Zaal Village in the union council of Komila is another point suggested for deworming vaccination and drenching. Total eight hundred and forty nine 849 numbers of animals are vaccinated, which include sex hundred and twenty 620 small and two hundred twenty nine 229 large animals. The locality of Zaal Komila is a hard hilly area but most of the people brought their animals to vaccination point.

4) The forth point for vaccination is kas Bala of komila union council. In this point Total 683 animals vaccinated drenched. 473 small animals and 210 large animals were drenched and vaccinated at this point. 5) The village of Baik Payin union 6) council Komila was the fourth point for vaccination. The village Baik payen is selected on bases of its grass rich mountains. Most of the people View of Medicine Arrangement in the area use to live there just because of, to feed their animals easily. In the village of Baik Payin total number of four hundred and ninety three 493 animals was vaccinated and drenched in which 241 small animals and 153 large animals included. 8) In the union council of Dassu village Uchar Nalla vaccination and drenching Campaign conducted. In this area total no of 497 animals vaccinated and drenched. In which four hundred and fifty one small animals and 46 large animals included. 9) Village Rango of union council Komila is covered in the campaign too. In this village total 1206 animals in which 884 small and 322 are large animals included.

Social Impacts/Out comes


Awareness raising about identification of animals different diseases. People are able to use available livestock for the solution of their problems. Eradication of Hemorrhagic Septicemias, and dewarming, Due to these vaccination schemes the economic status of the people improved. Health status improved and protected due to favor and clean supply of milk from germs and different epidemic diseases. Clean and protected environment. Awareness and practice of saving will be improved in community members. Due to all these efforts, decrease in poverty. View of Medicine Arrangements for vaccination

Impacts on SDF. Salik Foundation becomes more effective and famous in the community. Salik Foundation has become more equipped and furnished due to PPAF support. SDF got a new experience by completing the project successfully.
