ASSIGMENT: FOR CLO CLEARENCE

Q NO 1: A stepped shaft ABC consist of two solid circular segments is subjected to torques T 1 = 2300 N.m
and T2 = 900 N.m acting opposite directions, as shown in Figure 1. The larger segment of the shaft has a
diameter of d1 = 58 mm and length, L1 = 760 mm; the smaller segment has a diameter of d2 = 45 mm and
length, L2 = 510 mm. The material is made up of steel with shear modulus G = 76 GPa,

(a) Calculate the maximum shear stress in the shaft and the angle of twist (in degrees) at end C.

(b) What is the required diameter of segment BC and resulting twist at end C? if the maximum shear stress
in BC is same as AB.{CLO 1}

ANS:
T1= 2300Nm; d1= 58mm; L1= 760mm
T2= 900Nm; d2=45mm; L1=510mm
G= 76GPa
Reaction at A:
∑T= TA- T1+ T2 = 0
TA= T1- T2 = 2300Nm- 900Nm
=1400Nm
Segment AB:
Cut segment AB, according to the torque equilibrium for left-hand side:
∑T= TAB+ TA= 0
TAB = -1400Nm
Ip = πd/32
(τab)max = T (d/2)/Ip
=16T/πd3
=16(-1400000Nmm)/3.14(58mm)3
=-36.5MPa
|(τab)max|=36.5MPa
Φab=TL/GIp
=TL/G 32/πd4
=16(-1400000Nmm)/3.14(58mm)3
=-36.5MPa
|(τab)max|= 36.5 MPa
ϕAB= TL/GIp =TL/G 32/πd4
=[(-1400000Nmm)*(760mm)*32]/[ (76*10 3MPa)π(58mm)4]
=-0.0126rad
Segment BC:
Cut segment BC, according to the torque equilibrium for left-hand side:
∑T= TBC+ TA- T1= 0
TBC= -TA+T1= 900Nm
Ip= πd4/32
(τBC)max= T(d/2)/Ip
= 16T/πd3
= 16(900000Nmm)/3.14(45mm)3
= 50.3MPa
Φbc = TL/GIp
= TL/G 32/πd4
= (900000Nmm)*(510mm)*32/(76*103MPa)π(45mm)4
=0.015rad
Comparing |(τAB)max| and |(τBC)max| give maximum shear stress in the bar is 50.3MPa
The angel of twist at point C is:
ϕAB+ ϕBC = -0.0126 + 0.015
= -0.0126+ 0.015
=0.0024rad
=0.138o
Q NO 2:
Determine the reactions from the equations of equilibrium for the beams shown in Figure 2.

ANS:
1)
HA = 0
-P2(b)+RB(L)=0
-P2(L-b)+RA(L)=0
2)
HA=0
-P2+RA=0
-P2(b)+M=0
QNO3: Write down the formulas to calculate the normal stresses and shear stresses on the top
and bottom of the rectangular beams?
Q NO 4: The hoisting arrangement for lifting a large pipe is shown in Figure 4. The spreader is made up
of steel tubular section with outer diameter 70 mm and inner diameter 57 mm. The length of spreader is
2.6 m and its modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa. Using the factor of safety of 2.25 with respect to Euler
buckling of the spreader, what is the maximum weight of pipe that can be lifted? Assume pinned
conditions at the ends of the spreader. (CLO 4)

SOL:
E= 200GPa, d1= 57mm, d2= 70mm
L= 2.6m, n=2.25, α= a tan (7/10)
I= π/64 (d24 –d14) = 6.6*105 mm4
Critical load for pinned-pinned column:
Allowable load on AB:
Pallow = Pcr/n
=85.8kN
Force balance at point A:
∑ FH = 0 -P + Tcos (α)= 0
∑ Fv = 0 Tsin(α) - W/2=0

Therefore, the maximum weight Wmax is

Wmax= 2Pallow tan (α) = 120kN
