SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

1. DEFINITION:
Social responsibility is a means to achieve sustainability. Adopting key CSR principles
such as accountability and transparency can help ensure the long-term viability and
success of any organization or system.
Social responsibility reflects the individuals’ and organizations’ responsibility to act in the
best interest of their society and engage in activities contributing to social development. In
essence, it explains the accountability of individuals and organizations toward society.

2. RESPONSIBILITY AS AN ENGINEER ENGINEERS’ SOCIAL


RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a professional whose work can have a significant impact on society,
engineers have several social responsibilities, including:
Safety: Engineers must ensure that their designs and products are safe for
use by the public and meet industry safety standards.
Sustainability: Engineers must design and implement sustainable solutions
that reduce environmental impact and preserve natura l resources for future
generations.
Ethical Conduct: Engineers must maintain high ethical standards in all
aspects of their work, including interactions with clients, colleagues, and the
public. They must prioritize integrity, honesty, and transparency in their
professional conduct.
Public Welfare: Engineers must consider the impact of their work on the
public and enhance the quality of life for all.
Collaboration: Engineers must collaborate with other professionals,
stakeholders, and the public to achieve common goals and create solutions
that benefit all.

Overall, engineers have a responsibility to use their skills and knowledge to


contribute positively to society and the environment, and to always act in a
socially responsible manner.

3. BLAME RESPONSIBILITY AND CAUSATION:


Causation helps us understand the relationship between events and
consequences, while blame responsibility involves moral judgments about
who is responsible for those consequences. Both concepts are important in
discussions about ethics an d moral philosophy, particularly in determining
who should be held accountable for actions and outcomes.

4. LIABILITY:
Liability refers to the legal responsibility that individuals or organizations
have for their actions or failures to act. In the context of engineering,
liability can arise when engineers design, manufacture, or provide services
that cause harm or damage to others. Engineers may be held liable for
professional negligence, product liability, or intellectual property
infringement. To avoid liability, engineers must ensure that their work is
performed to a high standard and in compliance with applicable laws and
regulations, and that their products or services are safe and free from
defects.

5. CONCLUSION:
As an engineer I have a social responsibilit y to ensure that my work
contributes positively to society. This includes designing products and
systems that are safe, accessible, and environmentally SUSTAINABLE while
acting ethically and with INTEGRITY.
