INTRODUCTION

1.1 General Bridge Construction

The construction sector is now recognized as a competitive business, and many of

the associated corporations have made major efforts to create the technology needed. On
addition to the use of arts and sciences in building sites, which has been viewed as an art
rather than a single science, the construction business also includes design, construction
operations, and project management. The function of a bridge is to provide pathway over a
physical obstruction, generally something that would be dangerous to cross otherwise, such
as a body of water, valley, or road, without blocking the path underneath.
Bridge building requires careful planning and scheduling since it has a significant
influence on people's daily lives. For bridge building, social, scientific, and technological
aspects must be taken into consideration. The choice to build a bridge across any obstruction
is made to benefit the communities that are located on either side of the project. Some
significant bridges help the entire nation.
One of the skills necessary for effective construction project management is planning
and scheduling. For two key reasons, proper scheduling is crucial. First off, good scheduling
influences the planning and setting of project deadlines, which affects how other people see
your dependability and competency as a project manager. Additionally, planning and
scheduling frequently decide the Resources and, as a result, the contract's or project's
commercial viability.
The project management application Microsoft Project 2016 can plan, organize, and
manage resource tools as well as provide resource estimations. Planning, scheduling, cost
control and budget management, resource allocation, collaboration software,
communication, decision-making, quality management, and documentation or
administration system can all be managed by the programme, depending on its level of
sophistication.

1.2 Project Title

Planning & Scheduling of Minor Bridge Construction by Using MS Project 2016.

1.3 Objectives

 Prepare work breakdown structure (WBS) of Minor Bridge

 Assigned activities with respective duration and predecessors

1.4 Scope of Project

1.4.1 Planning and Scheduling

Due to the significant influence that bridge building would have on people's lives,
planning is necessary. For bridge building, social, scientific, and technological
aspects must be taken into account. The choice to build a bridge across any
obstruction is made to benefit the communities that are located on either side of the
project.
Basically, scheduling is figuring out how the various project tasks interact
with one another. Following a list of the activities, an estimation of their duration
based on prior experiences is made. These software programme cannot be utilized
for tasks for which the duration cannot be exactly calculated, such as research work.
Prior to being allocated to the mentioned activities, the resources are first created
and their cost per shift is determined. Resources include people, things, and money.
A baseline must be established each time the project is updated by assessing the work
completed on the site in order to track the progress made to that point.

1.4.2 Bridge Construction Project

The project management processes for building a road include five phases:
feasibility, design, procurement, construction, and operation and maintenance.
However, in this study, we will just discuss the construction phase.

2

Method of Measurement
Description:
The descriptions identify the work covered by the respective items, but
the exact nature and extent of the work is to be ascertained from the
Drawings & Specifications.

Quantities
1 The quantities shall be computed net using dimensions from the
drawing, unless directed otherwise by the client's site engineer. No
allowance shall be made for bulking, shrinkage or waste. No other type,
terms or regulation for computing the quantities will be used and
accepted. For any kind of work and item, the net dimension will be used
for computing the quantities. Quantities may be rounded up or down
where appropriate. Fractional quantities are not generally necessary and
should not be given to more than two places of decimals.

Unit of measurement
The following units of measurement and abbreviations shall be used.
Unit & Abbreviation:
Millimetre = mm
Metre = m
Square millimetre = mm²
2 Square metre = m²
Cubic metre = m³

5 shall be included either in the site installation costs or in the item rates.
No additional costs will be paid.

Infrastructure at bridge site, access roads, contractor's yard, construction

6
site, laborers camp and so forth.

All necessary accommodations like stores, workshops, etc. required for

proper execution of works shall be provided, built, maintained and
removed by the contractor at his own cost and within the working time
period. The following points are important to be fulfilled:

a) all necessary safety measures and efforts to avoid accidents and

damages to the property.
b) sufficient labour camp with properly maintained sanitary facilities,
7 drinking water and supply of electricity (if available).
c) proper waste management at site and labour camp.
d) construction materials to be deposited and stored well under shed
e) a temporary drainage system at the site. The contractor shall build no
infrastructure without prior approval by the client. The client shall

laying the concrete. Concrete samples in form of cubes shall be taken
from different batches during the pouring of the concrete and the cubes
12 have to be tested for strength. The contractor can either choose to have
the testing facilities set up at the construction site or get the tests done
from a reputable laboratory. The contractor has to bear the expenses for
all the tests that are required for building the bridge to the specifications
stipulated in the drawings, BoQ, technical specification and other
documents of the contract.

Various
It is understood that all the above costs are included in the site
installation . By signing the contract, the contractor confirms that all
efforts and costs to fulfill the tasks listed above as a part of site
13 installation are included in the rates. The mode of payment for the site
installation shall be as follows:-
a. 80% after the site installation is complete
b. 20% after the site is restored to its initial shape and condition or as
per the instruction of Client/site engineer

PREPARATORY WORKS
NO. ITEM DESCRIPTION UNIT OF MEASURE QUANTITY OF WORKS UNIT PRICE TOTAL AMOUNT

EARTHWORK
NO. ITEM DESCRIPTION UNIT OF MEASURE QUANTITY OF WORKS UNIT PRICE TOTAL AMOUNT

Excavation work
The contractor shall be deemed to have made himself fully acquainted
18
with the full nature & complexity of the work, the location and
character of the site and means of access to the site.
The rates and work descriptions have to include all activities and all
costs necessary to complete the work. The erecting, use and dismantling
of necessary working platforms, scaffolding and related structures have
to be included in the rates. Construction of coffer dams, guide bunds,
sheet piles etc. if required for diversion of the river in order to get the
working space or to control seepage during excavation shall also be
19
included in the rates. The relevant drawings are an integral part of these
tender documents. The contractor has to study all drawings in detail. By
submitting the tender, the contractor is declaring that he has understood
the drawings and all the works involved and is prepared to complete all
construction work in a competent manner. Only the highest degree of
accuracy and quality will be accepted.

The Contractor confirms also to be fully aware of the soil condition. He

agrees not to ask for additional payments due to changed soil
conditions. The word "soil" in this context refers to all types of soil,
earth, rock, stone, sand, boulders, gneiss, clay, gravels, mica schist and
so on. In other words, the rate quoted for the soil excavation shall apply
for all the excavation materials; soil, earth, rock - hard and/or soft,
requiring or not requiring blasting. Irrespective of the type of
excavation material, the contractor shall be paid at the same rate - the
rate quoted by the contractor for 'soil' excavation. Therefore, while
submitting the rates, the contractor has to estimate the proportion of
various materials (soil, ordinary rock, hard rock) in the excavation
depending on the site condition and quote accordingly. The fact that
20
some of the excavation works will be at the river side, in the river and
below the water level will also not justify any increase in the costs. It is
important that the contractor does careful study of the site condition
prior to submitting the tender. The excavation shall be paid as Solid
Volume. Solid volume is the volume of excavation calculated directly
from the foundation dimensions of the structure without allowance for
bulking, shrinkage, wastage, working space, slope cutting etc. But the
contractor has to be aware of the fact that the soil cannot be dug
vertically and that additional excavations would be required for getting
the working space around the foundations, slope cutting etc. and the
contractor has to account for these additional quantities while setting
rates for the excavation works.

Clearing & grubbing of site including uprooting all vegetation, grass,

bush shrubs, saplings and trees of girth up to 1200 mm, removal of
stumps of trees of girth of all sizes including removing stumps of trees

serviceable materials as directed by engineer with all leads and lifts etc.
complete

Excavation in ordinary/hard rock for foundations of abutments and

intermediate piers. Here excavation means soil and rock cutting up to
the level shown in the drawing. Controlled balsting would be permitted.
The volume of soil excavation is calculated as solid volume as per
drawings but the contractor has to consider the fact that it maynot be
22 possible to excavate the foundation vertically for deeper foundations m3 1940.00 60.00 116400.00
and should therefore keep provisions for slope cutting, working space
etc. in the rates including dewatering by bailing out or pumping out
water. The loading, offloading and transportation has to be included in
the rate. The quantity is for abutments at both banks and also for
foundation for two intermediate piers.

Backfilling around and behind the foundations, abutments & return

walls. Handling, loading, offloading, transportation, watering and all
necessary works shall be included in the rate. The back filling shall be
done as per the instruction of site engineer and in layers not more than
23 m3 550.00 80.00 44000.00
300mm thick and compacted well with earth rammer or compactor. The
Client's site engineer will strictly supervise this to make sure that full
compaction is achieved. The quantity of backfilling is only upto the end
of abutments at both the banks.
