Call to protect coral reefs

FIJI’s coral reefs are a beautiful world of amazing biodiversity but part of it is dying at a
rate that could mean that this generation might be the last to witness its colorful
features.

Diving at the Great Sea Reef (GSR) off the coast of Macuata on Wednesday,
5 Fiji’s permanent representative of the United Nations (UN), Peter Thomson called on
the world to protect coral reefs.

Mr Thomson, who was last year appointed as a UN special envoy on oceans,

went diving along a portion of the GSR. On Tuesday, the GSR was nominated by Cabinet
to become a Ramsar-approved Site (A Ramsar Site is
10 a wetland site designated of international importance under the Ramsar
Convention).

"There was enough to see that the reef is recovering well from its recent bleaching.
There is beautiful coral down there, hundreds of varieties and colours. The sea life with
good size fish is very encouraging,” Mr Thomson
15 said.

"I was praying that after all this rain, we would get some beautiful weather and look at
this beautiful sunshine. There is also a great protective barrier of Fiji here and it is also
a bunker of biodiversity in Fiji."

WWF-Pacific, which works with the fish basket (qoliqoli) owners of the Great
20 Sea Reef for its conservation, chose Mr Thomson to become a champion and advocate
for the GSR to raise its international profile.
The role means Mr Thomson will in part advocate to raise awareness and raise money
needed to finance the conservation needs of the structure,
which covers more than 260 kilometres of ocean.

25 Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who officially launched the

International Year of the Reef (IYOR) after Mr Thomson’s dive expedition said, the
conservation of the GSR is a critical priority so it is nominated, that part of the GSR
be protected under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands. "It's a shocking fact
that our generation could be the last to
30 witness the beauty of our reefs," PM Bainimarama said.

"It is an important day for Fiji to formally launch the IYOR 2018. Thank you for the
honour of choosing Fiji to highlight the state of the world’s reefs. This has particular
resonance for the Fijian people because of where we are today, we are on the edge of
one of the most precious natural assets."

Passage II (5 marks)

It was a homework-free weekend. Derek suggested going swimming. He had just

completed his swimming course and was eager to display the skills he had learnt.
His friends gladly agreed. They headed straight for their neighborhood swimming
pool. It was quite crowded. They changed
5 quickly and with great excitement, jumped into the pool. They swam around in the
shallower end. A lifeguard was keeping a watchful eye on all the swimmers. Derek
challenged his friends for a swim over in the deep end. They refused as they
knew it was dangerous for them. Besides, they did not swim that well after all.
Derek insisted that he was
10 a better swimmer and set out to prove it. He walked over to the deep end and
plunged in.
At first everything seemed alright and his friends cheered. Suddenly, Derek
gave a shout and started flapping his arms. He was having difficulties! His
friends were too shocked to react.
15 Luckily, the lifeguard noticed him and quickly dived in. When he was safely out of
the pool, the lifeguard gave him a tongue lashing for fooling around. Derek
apologised. All the way home, he had to endure his friends making fun of him.

She gives us food and shelter, just salute it...

5 With Global Warming, it's in danger,

Let's save it by becoming a strong ranger...

With dying trees and animals, it's in sorrow, Make

green today and green tomorrow...

With melting snow, one day it will sink,

10 How can we save it, just think...

Trees are precious, preserve them,
