Experiment 2

Dielectric constant
AIM: To determine the Dielectric constant of a dielectric substance.
APPARATUS: variable capacitor, test capacitor, radio frequency oscillator, dielectric substance,
ammeter of micro range.

THEORY:
The dielectric constant εr , can be calculated by means of diagram. This is

Where, C0 = capacitance of test capacitor

C1 = capacitance of variable capacitor (without dielectric substances)
C2 = capacitance of variable capacitor (with dielectric substances)

PROCEDURE:
1. Connection should make as per instruction.
2. At a genuine frequency of RF oscillator; note the values of C1 and C2 from a given
measurement kit by adjustment of capacity of variable capacitor.
3. Repeat serial no. 2 for different frequencies.

1 3 17
2 4.5 14
3 6 10
4 7.5 8

CALCULATIONS:

RESULT & CONCLUSIONS:

The dielectric constant of a dielectric substance is ________

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Resonance should be checked for whole frequency range by noting the resonance for
lowest and the highest frequency of RF oscillator.
2. The dielectric disc must be attached tightly into the capacitor.
3. The dielectric disc should be removed carefully without defecting capacitor.

QUESTIONS:
1. How will you define dielectrics?
2. What is the difference between insulators and dielectrics?
3. What is the significance of relative permittivity ?
4. What is polarization?
