Research question:

How does hosting a Formula 1 race affect the economy of a country?

Briefly explain why you have chosen this question and topic.

Formula 1 is quickly becoming a worldwide sport with many nations

waiting in the wings to have their name on the F1 calendar. Viewership and
attendance figures are higher than they have ever been and so I wanted to
ask the question, how positive or even negative the economic impact can
be on the nation hosting.

I have always had a passion for automobiles and over the last 2 years have
been enjoying motorsport. The knock-on effects of a grand prix are what I
aim to tackle with this article and what the future of F1 is with regards to
the length and quality of the calendar. This can be achieved by taking a
deep dive at circuits that have delivered positively in the past and those
that haven’t so. Factors such as promotion, quality of the venue,
population and of course, the overall spectacle, the racing, among others,
play a massive role on whether the nation has lived up to its expectations.
One big example of a massive winner in recent Formula 1 is the US grand
prix that happens in Austin. The taking over of F1 by Liberty Media and the
release of drive to survive on Netflix have greatly raised interests in F1 in
the region. On a race weekend, subways are packed, hotels are all booked
and the atmosphere of the circuit paves way for many other events to take

place. One not so successful example, is the Buddh circuit in India.

Viewership figures were low and the conflict between the Indian
government and Formula 1s bosses, found it unfitting to race there. Having
taken a brief look at both sides of the argument, I see it as the best topic
for me in relation to my passion and due to the scope of the question.

Outline the research method(s) you will use and explain how this will help you to
answer your research question.

My secondary sources primarily comprise of web articles and books that

talk about how F1 makes its big bucks and I hope to dissect all the
information I gather, and write it in my own words to effectively answer my
question.

My primary data will be collected from business professors as they will

know everything that goes into organizing a sporting event of this scale and
calibre and hopefully if I’m lucky, I can get into contact from someone in
the field of motorsport or maybe even someone from F1 itself to answer
my questions and give me insider views that wouldn’t normally be found in
an article or a book.

My chosen method of primary data will be through interviews. Preparing

surveys for this kind of topic will be difficult as everyone I plan on
consulting will be specializing in different things and pre-prepared
questions won’t satisfy my needs.

Outline the main sources of information you have identified for the project.
