Lesson No. 1: Aquatics and Water Recreational Activities
Swimming is the act of propelling oneself through water by means of the arms and legs. It is the
act or the art of floating or moving progressively in the water by the hands and feet. Is an
individual or team sport and activity.
Breathing—it comes completely naturally to all of us. It is an activity that will function without
interruption or conscious thought under the control of the autonomic nervous system
DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. Aerobic exercise means long duration exercise that requires continuous supply of oxygen.
For example--aerobic exercise in the water means working against water's natural resistance.
2. Anaerobic exercise refers to any form of exercise that requires less oxygen. For example--
short wim sprints.
3. Action in swimming is a movement of the limbs.
4. Breathing means moving air into and out of the lungs.
5. Catch/catch point is the moment when the hands start to exert pressure on the water during
an arm stroke.
6. Crawl is a stroke which is used in freestyle racing.
7. Drill is practiced exercise to improve specific aspects of technique.
8. Flutter kick is alternative vertical kick used in front crawl and backstroke.
9. Glide means streamlined arrow-like positions as the body moves thru water with no leg
action.
10. Freestyle is the common term for front crawl stroke.
11. Oxygen deficit means a temporary shortage of oxygen in the body created by exertion.
With practice, your body will learn to cope with less oxygen when you are swimming.
12. Kick is that part of the stroke performed by the legs and feet.
13. Kicking is training drill in which only the legs are used.
14. Pull is that part of the stroke performed by the arms.
15. Pulling is the training drill in which only the arms are used.
16. Recovery means movements which return the limb to the position from which they started.
17. Push is the part of arm action after the pull and before recovery.
18. Stroke is a method of propulsion thru the water.
19. Sculling refers to small inwards and outwards movements with the hands and arms.
1) Water Polo This is very energetic and involves a full body workout, as players must
swim and defend the ball as well as try to score in the opponent's goal.
2) Rafting Thrill-seekers and extreme sports aficionados treasure this action-packed water
sport. An inflatable raft must be maneuvered over rather through or dangerous water by a
team of around 4-12 people.
3) Rowing is a sport in which athletes compete in boats on rivers, lakes or the ocean,
depending on the type of race. The force of the athletes on the oar blades of the boat while
rowing, work against the water forces to propel the boat forward.
4) Synchronized Diving What’s there to it, step off a board and jmp. Actually, this water
sport is a little more complex than that. Particular diving and jumping forms and rules exist
and in some cases, acrobatics while falling must be performed.
5) Synchronized Swimming A combination of swimming, gymnastics and dance,
synchronized swimming is performing elegant synchronized moves in the water with music
played in the background.
6) Kayaking This water sport, where a small boat called a kayak is used to move across
water, can be done in while water, river, seas, or lakes for different purposes, such as
recreation, expedition, touring, adventure, or competitive purposes.
7) Canoeing is done in a small boat called a canoe which is pointed at both ends. It can be
done individually, or with group of people in rivers, lakes or even water sparks.
Yachting Technically speaking, yachting is sailing or boating on a vessel called yacht. These vessels
or yachts are designed to sail fast and are hence used widely for racing.
RECREATIONAL WATER SPORTS
Recreational water sports are fun-filled, great stress-relievers and help you relax,
refresh, and rejuvenate. They are very popular and major tourist attractions as
1. Snorkeling - Snorkeling is swimming on the surface or through water with a diving mask, fins
and a hollow tube called snorkel(a pipe that helps you breathe underwater).
2. Spearfishing
Spearfishing is an ancient method of fishing using sharpened ticks to catch fish.
Technology has changed spearfishing-which not involves the use of air powered spearguns or
slings along with invanous diving equipment. 3. Underwater Photography
If you love photography, this will be an ideal sport for you. Diving in the deep blue
waters equipped with a camera offers exquisite, exciting, and photographic moments.
4. Water Aerobics
Water Aerobics is a form of exercise where aerobics are performed in a shallow water.
It is beneficial for one and all, including the elderly.
5. Parasailing
A parasail is a parachute that specially designed to be the towed behind a boat. You can
enjoy a breathtaking view of the water and horizon with a fun filled ride.
6. Scuba Diving
It is type of underwater diving using a scuba set-that generally consists of an air hose,
mouthpiece, regulator, harness, back plate, and an air tank-to breathe underwater.

1. Mask - It serves as the viewing device in appreciating the world beneath the water.
2. Snorkel - It is a piece of equipment that makes it possible to breathe at the surface
while the face is submerged in water.
3. Snorkeling Fins - Speed and efficiency in swimming are what one gains in wearing fins.
They provide the necessary locomotion to propel effortlessly in the water.
4. Snorkel Vest- Small and inflatable, which provide more buoyancy while floating on
water.
5. Skin Protection - In order to protect the skin from the heat of the sun, one may use a
good biodegradable sunscreen or a better choice will be wearing a long sleeve rash guard.
6. Swimming Caps - It is a big help in keeping hair out of the snorkel and the faces as well.
It will also help in preventing the scalp from burning on a sunny day.
