Giving Expanded Definition of Words

Background Information:
People often judge others by their outward appearances. In the same way, people also
judge you by how you speak and express yourself. This is why it is so important to expand your
vocabulary. Getting the meaning of a word is not enough. Expanding your vocabulary bank is
important for comprehension.
Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process and is critical to reading
comprehension. Words and their meanings are important because you need to be able to
communicate your ideas and feelings concisely.
According to Rao (2017), language is symbolic that is used to represent ideas, objects,
and feelings. Connotation and denotation are parts of language and communication. They are
two principal methods of describing the meanings of words. The connotation of a word or term
adds elements of emotion, attitude, or color. The meaning or use of denotation and connotation
depends partly on the field of study. Knowing the denotation and connotation of words is useful
for students to improve their writing style. Therefore, connotation and denotation play a vital role
in learning language and comprehending literature. Words can be used for positive or negative
connotations based on the context and need.
By keeping yourself engaged in answering activities in this lesson, you will encounter
notes and tasks that will help you improve your vocabulary skill in giving expanded definition of
words.
Denotation and Connotation
Denotation and connotation are two principal methods of defining the meanings of words.
Denotation is the precise, literal definition of a word that might be found in a dictionary, whereas
connotation refers to the wide array of positive and negative associations that most words
naturally carry with them.
Denotation is the specific, exact, and concrete meaning of a word. It remains the same
regardless of culture and personal experiences. Scientist and philosophers focus on the
denotations of words in order to communicate exact meaning.
Example:
The denotation of skinny is “very thin.”
Connotation is the attitude, feeling, and emotion aroused by a word. A word can have
positive or negative connotation. Sometimes words have different connotations to different people
because of their experiences. Writers of literature rely more heavily on connotation in order to
evoke an emotional response in the reader.
Examples:
Negative: Skinny suggests “too thin.” Skinny has a negative connotation.
Positive: Slender suggests “attractively thin.” Slender has a positive connotation.

From “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
. I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Adapted from “Sympathy” by Paul Lawrence Dunbar

I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,

When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore,—
When he beats his bars and he would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings—
I know why the caged bird sings!

E. Read the paragraph below. Look for at least two unfamiliar words, and then do the tasks.

When Gautam met Jennifer, he found her honesty refreshing. He had never met anyone
who could be so candid, even when it might be easier to lie. Once, Gautam wore a shirt Jennifer
didn’t like. “You look like a clown!” she said, with a laugh. Another day, Gautam asked Jennifer if
she thought that Sonal might be interested in him. “Not a chance!” she replied with her usual
frankness. Then one day, when they were out with their friends, Gautam sprinkled too much garlic
on his pizza. Again, Jennifer’s criticism was straightforward. “Someone give this guy a breath
mint!” she exclaimed. That’s when Gautam realized that being blunt was overrated.
