A fight for survival

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.” This quote, which
may or may not have been said by the famous scientist Albert Einstein, gives us a clear warning about the
importance of protecting the environment. But every year, more and more animal species become endangered – and
some even become extinct.
At least once a year, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – an organization in Switzerland –
updates its ‘Red List’. This list is the most important source of information we have about the environment. The first
Red List appeared in 1964, and it now contains information on over 75,000 of the world’s animal and plant species.
Each of these species is put into one of nine groups – from ‘Least Concern’ to ‘Extinct’. The latest list defines over
3,000 animal species as ‘Endangered’, including the black rhino, the Sumatran tiger and the Asian elephant – some of
the most recognisable and beautiful animals on the planet.
Why do animals become endangered? It’s almost entirely down to human activity. Many animals are overhunted
for their meat or body parts, while we also destroy animals’ natural habitats by cutting down trees for wood, or
building roads or homes. Also, pollution in the form of acid rain and oil spills is threatening many species of fish
and birds.
When an animal becomes endangered, it’s a clear sign that action needs to be taken. Governments need to set up more
nature reserves to protect endangered animals, and there need to be stricter laws against illegal hunting. Also, the public
can make a difference by avoiding products made from endangered animals, and donating to environmental charities
such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This organisation works to protect endangered animals around the world. All
in all, it’s up to all of us to take responsibility and take action ... before it’s too late.

3 Most of the species in the Red List are in the ‘Least Concern’ category. _____
4 When animals become endangered, humans are usually to blame. _____
