In communication, there are many ways of communicating, either its talking with oneself or
with another. An excellent example of a great conversation with others is an interpersonal
communication. Interpersonal communication is not just mainly about what is being said, the
language being used, and an exchange of information. It is also about how it is said, tone of the
voice, facial expressions, gestures and others. If two or more people says something and the
others respond to that statement, no matter how subtle or unintentional it is, then a
communication is taking place.
However, even without speech people still receive messages through their own way of
perspective using such forms as non-verbal behavior. The various types of possible
communication will cluster under these four basic categories; the verbal, listening, written, and
non-verbal communication. On the other hand, there is something that is called intrapersonal
communication. Intrapersonal communication is defined as communication with oneself or like
the one you are doing right now, talking with yourself would be a great example. It does also
include reading aloud, thinking, writing, singing and analyzing which usually takes place when
your alone or even bored. There are three different types of intrapersonal communication,
namely self-concept, perception, and expectation. So far these 2 types of communication are
necessary in ways we don’t expect them to be.
Additionally, in communication there are 5 types of Speech Styles. The first one is called the
frozen style, also known as fixed speech. Frozen style uses the complex grammatical sentence
structure and vocabulary known only to experts in a particular field. It is also often used in
respectful situation or formal ceremony, specifically pledges, anthems, and laws would fit the
example. The second is Formal Style, it is most often seen in writing than in speaking. This
speech style is expected to be presented in complete sentences with specific word usage and it
does not include slang words, colloquial language and normally does not include contractions
such as hasn’t or doesn’t. for instance a family sharing ideas, very close friends sharing secrets,
and announcements. The third is Casual style or Informal style, it is appropriate to use casual
language in situations where speech is improvised and is not prepared in ahead of time. It is like
when you want to get someone to know them better on a more personal level and you want
the person to feel at ease. It includes slang or other words or phrases that work well in
interpersonal communication when people are comfortable with each other. The fourth one is
known as Intimate Style, usually used in conversations between people who are very close and
know each other. It is characterized by an economy of words, with a high incidence of
significant nonverbal communication, such as gesture, facial expression, eye contact and so on.
There is easy and free participation of both the speaker and listener. Last but not least, the
Consultative Style. Consultative Style is known as the Third level of language. These speech
style uses listener participation and feedback and is less appropriate for writing. The features of
this style are the speaker supplies background information and the listener participates
continuously.
