Full Marks: 40 Answer all questions Time: 2 Hours

1) Using diagrams highlight the main features of Transparent and Translucent lightpaths. [4]

2) Suppose host A wants to send a large file to host B. The path from host A to B has three links of data rates R1=400 kbps,
R2=100 kbps and R3=2 Mbps, connected serially. Assuming no other traffic in the network, what is the throughput of the
file transfer? Assuming infinite buffer is available in the intermediate routers, state the time required to transmit 6×10 6 bytes
from host A to host B. [4]

3) Draw a block schematic for a strictly nonblocking 8 × 8 optical switch, employing 2×2 electro-optic switching elements
as the building block in Spanke’s architecture. [4]

4) Consider an optical communication link operating between two cities, using WDM transmission over the C band of a
single-mode fiber. If the link uses 32 wavelengths, each operating at 10 Gbps, calculate the effective transmission capacity
(in Gbps) of the link. Estimate the maximum allowable value of chromatic dispersion for each wavelength, if the link length
is 100 km and the laser linewidth is 100 MHz. Ignore polarization mode dispersion. [5]

5) Consider that the asymptotic unavailability of the TDM PON components is given by Ux, with x representing the various
elements/devices. Using the following values of Ux’s, estimate the worst-case availability of the ONU connections in the
Type-B TDM PON. Assume that the PON has a feeder length of 10 km and the distribution fibers are all within 5 km.
Asymptotic unavailability:
OLT: UOLT = 5.12 × 10−7,
ONU: UONU = 5.12 × 10−7,
optical fiber: UF = 3.42 × 10−6/km,
optical switch: UOS = 4 × 10−7,
remote node (RN) using optical splitter (OSP): URN = UOSP = 10−7. [6]

6) (a) Why CSMA/CD protocol cannot be used for Passive Optical Networks?
(b) Explain the following procedures:
[I] Transmission of frames from one ONU to another ONU connected to the same OLT using Point-to-Point Emulation
mode.
[II] Transmission of frames from one ONU to all other ONUs connected to the same OLT using Shared Mode Emulation.
[4+4=8]

7) (a) State True/False:

We can get multiple local optimum solutions if we solve a linear regression problem by minimizing the sum of squared
errors using gradient descent.

(b) State which of the option(s) are correct:

[A] Gradient descent will always find the global optimum, [B] Steps are taken proportional to the gradient of the function
at the current point, [C] The starting point could affect if a global optimum is found, [D] The descent continues until the
gradient is very large.

(c) Which of the following statement is true about outliers in Linear regression?
[A] Linear regression is sensitive to outliers, [B] Linear regression is not sensitive to outliers, [C] Can’t say, [D] None of
these.

(d) We have been given a dataset with n records in which we have input attribute as x and output attribute as y. Suppose we
use a linear regression method to model this data. To test our linear regressor, we split the data in training set and test set
randomly. Now we increase the training set size gradually. As the training set size increases, what do you expect will happen
with the mean training error?
[A] Increase, B) Decrease, C) Remain constant, D) Can’t Say.

(e) Explain the disadvantages of the conventional methods used to estimate the BER of a new lightpath request to be setup.
Suggest a Machine Learning technique that can be used for this purpose. Justify your answer. [1+1+1+1+5=9]
