ArtVo Psychology

Unit 2, Area of Study 1: What influences a person’s perception of the

‘Immersive gallery’ world?
Sensation and perception: the influence of biological, psychological, and
social factors on visual perception, including depth cues, visual perception
principles and perceptual set.

Introduction
Stepping into a world of optical illusions, the larger-than-life murals allows
you to come face to face with wild animals, scale rocky crevasses and surf the
ultimate pipelines. You will not only be viewing the many artworks on display
but immersing yourself into them and applying your knowledge of the visual
perception principles covered in your Psychology class.
The artists have used foreshortening to create the murals, which is a
perspective technique in which you can create an illusion of objects receding
into the distance, this technique helps to give the impression of depth in the
artwork. This is much like the pictorial depth cues covered in class.

Instructions
Depth perception For each image you take, be sure to carefully stand at the photopoint and try
principles to interact with the artwork.
In the session you will be able to see examples of the Pictorial Depth Cues:
Texture gradient
Height in the visual field
Relative size
Interposition
Linear perspective

And the Gestalt Priciples:

Similarity
Proximity
Closure
Figure-ground
