Introductory Message

This Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each ADM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each ADM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this ADM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

What’s New
By the time you have finished your Senior High School journey, you will be very excited
to enter the next chapter of your life as a student and that is to enter in a college or university.
However, how well-equipped are you in writing an application letter for your chosen school or
university?

Securing a job is the next step you will do after spending four or five years in college.
Preparing pertinent papers like a resume is something that a graduate must have for him/her
to land to a job. How knowledgeable are you in preparing a comprehensive resume to
ensure that you will get a job in the future?

In a corporate world, a person must be aware of


the different forms of correspondence like letters,
electronic mails, and memos. How aware are you of
the differences among these? Do you know how to
write one?

In this lesson, you will learn about purposeful


writing for professions. This lesson will also help you
how to write professional correspondences that you will
need when you enter to the corporate world.

What is It

A Resume is a tool that summarizes your skills, educational background, experiences,


and other qualifications. It is also called curriculum vitae, but this is a more detailed. It can be
considered as a sales tool in the sense that it helps you market your skills to a potential
employer, in the same manner that a product is advertised in a magazine.

The purpose of a resume is to introduce yourself to employers, present your


qualifications, and secure a slot for an interview. The goal of writing a resume is to showcase
your experience, education, and skills in a standardized format which is easy to read.

The key elements of a resume are as follows:

1. Personal Information: Name, Current/Permanent Address, Telephone/Cellphone


number and E-mail address.

2. Objective: In one short sentence, summarize your goal for your job search. The goal
statement should be related to the specific position for which you are applying. It is
also effective to highlight your skills in the goal statement.

Examples:
a. Seeking a position as a social worker providing service to the aged.
b. Seeking a position that utilizes my skills in counseling, research, and proposal
writing.

3. Education: Name of Primary, Secondary or Tertiary school where you finished your
studies.Iindicate if you received any awards and certificates.

4. Work and Related Experience: Summer jobs, Internships, Volunteer work (include
position title, company/organization, and dates.

5. Skills
a. Soft skills: (e.g. being responsible, loyal, hardworking, energetic, outgoing.)
b. Hard skills: (e.g. research and writing, Microsoft Publisher 2000, Public
speaking.)

6. References (2-3 people) Teacher/Professor, Work supervisor (current or past),


Character reference (Pastor, Headmaster, or someone who knows you well). Include
the name, relationship to you, organization, contact phone numbers.

College Admission Application Letter

A college admission application letter shows your interest in the college/university


while justifying why you are qualified at the same time. It also serves as a cover letter for all
your other college admission documents. As with any other correspondence, it follows a
standard letter format. Generally, a college admission application letter presents your
academic qualifications, accomplishments, and reasons for applying for admission.

Parts of a College Admission Application Letter

A. Introduction

1. State who you are and what you are applying for.
2. State an eye-catching statement about yourself that will cause the reader to continue
reading through your qualifications.
3. Show your enthusiasm to study in the university you are applying to.

B. Body

1. Present your academic qualifications, extracurricular involvements, community activity


engagements, and some personal qualities with specific evidence/s.
2. Organize your thoughts and segregate them into paragraphs. You may separate
paragraphs by theme (one paragraph for academic qualification and one for
extracurricular activities and so on).
3. State the benefits the university can obtain by admitting you. Do not just give facts,
explain how these facts will benefit the university.

C. Conclusion

1. Indicate your interest for an interview.


2. Indicate how the interviewer can contact you.
3. Express your hope for a positive response from the Admission Director.

Job Application Letter

A job application letter or cover letter is a type of personal business correspondence


which states your intention to work in a particular organization. It should always be attached
with your resume. While some online job applications do not require an application letter,
corporate experts say that employers are more likely to read a resume which is accompanied
by a cover letter.

A cover letter can be a response to a job advertisement, an unsolicited inquiry to a


prospective employer as part of your direct mail strategy, or a letter to a recruitment agency.
Regardless of the circumstance you may find yourself in, it is wise to research about the
company and the job you are interested in. You may also call the company’s Human Resource
department for further information or to get a copy of the company brochure.

Parts of a Cover Letter

A. Introduction

1. Introduce yourself and state your purpose in writing to the receiver.


2. Indicate your source of information in learning about the job vacancy. Was it through
a newspaper, magazine, the Internet, or a personal contact?
3. Add an interesting statement about yourself that will cause the reader to continue
reading through your credentials.
4. Show enthusiasm to work in the company.

B. Body

1. Present your work experience/s, academic qualifications, trainings, and some


personal qualities with specific evidence/s.
2. Organize your paragraphs accordingly. You may segregate them by theme (one
paragraph for work experience and one for education) or by function (management,
financial, technical).
3. Explain the benefits to the employers if they hire you. Do not simply give facts; explain
how these facts will contribute to the company.
4. For instance, instead of merely telling the company about all the trainings you
had, you may say, “I have extensive training in copyediting. You will save both time
and money because I will need little training on this area.”
5. In the last part of the body, direct the reader to a specific part of your resume that
suggests your strongest credentials for the position.

C. Conclusion

1. Indicate your interest for an interview at a time most convenient to the employer. If
possible, specify the time you are available for an interview.
2. Indicate how the interviewer can contact you.
3. Express an expectation of a positive response from the employer.
4. Thank the employer.

An electronic mail, more commonly known as e-mail, has been a vital part of our everyday
communication since its inception. We use it to send messages to everyone, from friends and
family to colleagues and superiors. Indeed, the e-mail has revolutionized interpersonal
communication.

An e-mail can serve many purposes. It can be used for directives, transmittals,
documentations, confirmations, explanations of procedure, recommendations, status reports,
and inquiries.

Advantages of Communicating through E-mail


1. It reaches the target reader fast.
2. Confirmation of acceptance is easy.
3. It is cheaper and easy to use.
