PAPER 4 Alternative to Practical

NOVEMBER 2009 SESSION 1 hour

1. An experiment was carried out to determine the percentage purity of a
sample of sodium carbonate.

A: is an impure solution of 3.8 g/dm 3 sodium carbonate.

B: is 1.0 mol dm3 hydrochloric acid

25.0 cm3 of A was pipetted into a conical flask. Methyl orange

indicator was added. Solution A was titrated with B from a burette.

The diagrams show the initial and final burette readings.

(a) Use the burette readings to complete the table of results.

Table of results

Titration number I II III

Final burette
reading / cm3
Initial burette
reading / cm3+
Volume of acid
B used / cm3

Tick the best titration results.

Summary

25.0 cm3 of A required _________________ cm3 of B. [4]

(b) Give the colour of methyl orange indicator

(i) before the end point

(ii) after the end point _______________________

(c) Write a balanced equation for the reaction.

[1]

(d) Calculate the number of moles of hydrochloric acid in the

volume of B used.

[1]

(e) Calculate the number of moles of sodium carbonate in the 25

cm3 fo A.

[1]

(f) (i) Calculate the number of moles of sodium carbonate in

one dm3.

[1]
3
(ii) Calculate the mass of sodium carbonate in one dm .

(Ar : Na = 23; C = 12; O = 16)

[1]

(g) Use your answer in (f)(ii) and the mass concentration of A to

calculate the percentage purity of sodium carbonate.

2. An experiment was carried out to investigate the rise in temperature

produced when 1.0 moldm-3 sodium hydroxide was added to 1.5
moldm-3 nitric acid.

Experiment I

When 2 cm3 of sodium hydroxide was added to 25 cm 3 of nitric acid

the highest temperature recorded was 27oC.

Experiment 2, 5, 7 and 9.

Experiment I was repeated using 5 cm 3, 20 cm3, 30 cm3, and 40 cm3

of sodium hydroxide respectively.

The diagrams show the highest temperatures recorded.

(a) Record the temperatures in the table of results.

Table of results

Experiment Number Volume of sodium Temperature / oC

hydroxide added / cm3
1 2.0 27.5
2 5.0
3 10.0 32.0
4 15.0 36.5
5 20.0
6 25.0 39.5
7 30.0
8 35.0 31.5
9 40.0
[2]

(b) Plot the results of the experiments on the grid below. Join up
the points with two straight lines.
[3]
(c) Use your graph to answer the questions below.

(i) Deduce the highest temperature reached.

Indicate clearly on the graph how you obtained your

answer.

(ii) What volume of sodium hydroxide produced this highest

temperature?

[3]

(d) Calculate the number of moles of sodium hydroxide in (c)(ii).

[1]

(e) Suggest why the temperature begins to fall after reaching its
highest reading.

A precipitate of silver chloride was formed.

(a) Write an ionic equation for the reaction.

[1]

(b) What is the colour of the precipitate?

[1]

(c) How could the precipitate be removed from the mixture?
