Unit 3 Instructional Strategies for Mathematics in the Primary Grades

Module No. 15 Collaboration
Student Name:
The Snowball Technique is a way for students to teach each other
important concepts and information. Students begin work individually.
Next, they collaborate with a partner. After that, partners form groups of
four. Groups of four join together to form groups of eight. This
snowballing effect continues until the entire class are working together
as one large group.

Identify a topic in primary mathematics in which this collaborative

activity can be used. Write down a sequence of increasingly complex
tasks that can be given in this activity.
Activity: SAY IT 3 TIMES!!!
Topic: Addition facts 1 to 20
Time: 10 minutes
CHALLENGE Tasks:
1.Select a column by spinning the MATH spinner.
2. Draw an equation and read it aloud.
3. The solution to the equation will be covered by the class.
4. After covering 4 consecutive squares in a row either horizontally,
vertically, or diagonally, the students will shout BINGO three times.

HARNESS Design your own collaborative activity. Explain the mechanics of this
activity succinctly.

Activity: Please put an end to me properly.

This activity helps students work together to solve problems. Each
group is given a problem to figure out. The board is divided into
sections for each team. Members of the team should work together to
solve the problem on the board, but they should do it one at a time. One
member will right the formula to be used, followed right away by the
second member who will translate the given using the formula yet, it
should not be completely answered and should leave for the other
members to solve until they reach the final answer. The trick is that
members are not allowed to train a group member who has been chosen
for the board.
