SIMOUN'S CAPTURE
GROUP 5
Why did Ibarra become Simoun?

After the events of Noli Me Tangere, Ibarra had

to fake his death. Then, he swore to get
revenge on his enemies. He dug up the family
wealth in a forest and went abroad. Ibarra
created a new identity and named himself
“Simoun”, moving to North America.
Who is Simoun in El Fili?
Simoun – Crisóstomo Ibarra in disguise,
presumed dead at the end of Noli Me Tángere.
Ibarra has returned as the wealthy jeweler
Simoun. His appearance is described as being
tanned, having a sparse beard, long white hair,
and large blue-tinted glasses.
What is the difference between

Ibarra and Simoun?

Ibarra was earnest and idealistic young man and

the love interest of Maria Clara. On the other

hand, he returned and transformed into Simoun in
El Filibusterismo, a wealthy man, a rich jeweler
who abandoned his idealistic views after the
tragic events in Noli Me Tangere.
What is the role of Simoun
in El Filibusterismo?
Simoun is the main character in Jose
Rizal's two El Filibusterismo novels. In
Rizal's second novel, he returns as a rich
jewelry salesman, Simoun. He is known to
be influential in the Spanish colonial
government in the Philippines and has
links to the Captain-General.
Who is the lover of Simoun
in El Filibusterismo?
Even though Ibarra has
created a new identity, as
Simoun it is clear that he still
loves Maria Clara.
What is the plan of Simoun
in El Filibusterismo?

Fueled by his mistreatment and

sufferings at the hands of the Spaniards
and his fury at María Clara's fate,
Simoun secretly plans a revolution to
seek revenge against those who
wronged him.
What happened to Simoun in

El Filibusterismo in the end?

In the final scene of Jose Rizal's novel El Filibusterismo, the anarchist plot of Simoun, to
bomb a wedding and kill the powerful of an imagined town in Philippine colonial
times, is preempted and fails. He takes poison and goes to the residence of Padre
Florentino to die.

After the failed revenge, Simoun was revealed to be responsible and was searched by the
civil guards. He was shot by a civil guard during his escape and sought refuge at Father
Florentino's house. He revealed his identity to the priest and asked him why did his plot failed
even though he had good intentions to free the Filipinos from oppression and why God had
forsaken him.

Father Tolentino replied that his plan failed because he was driven by revenge and that God
did not forsaken him. Before his death, Simoun accepted Father Florentino's explanation and
realized his wrongdoings.
SYMBOLISM
Simoun represents the revolutionaries during
that time who supported the idea of holding
bloody revolt against the Spanish
government. His death in El Filibusterismo
tells readers that Rizal does not support the
armed revolution. The author has also made
this clear through the scene where Padre
Florentino, after Simoun’s death, threw his
remaining jewels to the Pacific Ocean so it
may no longer be used for bribery and
corruption that can spark a revolt.
