Let Us Learn

Hello Grade 10, welcome to another journey of learning.

In your previous lesson, you learned about definitions. That

learning will be enhanced more in this module; moreover, you will have
new concepts which will help you in giving and making definitions.

In this module you will master the Most Essential Learning

Competency (MELC): Observe correct grammar in making definitions.

To master the competency, you are expected to:

• understand the rules of subject-verb agreement;

• define words observing correct grammatical structure;
• tell the importance of observing correct grammar in day to
day conversations.

What you should know, therefore, are the rules of subject- verb
agreement. Your target evidence in showing understanding of the
concept is to be able to make definitions employing correct grammar.
Enjoy learning!

Let Us Try

Let Us Study

Let us begin the fun-packed learning. This module seeks to hone your
21st Century Skills such as critical thinking, sound reasoning, analysis and
content interpretation.
This part is your jumping-off point. Here, your previous experiences will
be refreshed or new one will be created as your reading will traverse you to a
majestic sand dune.
Activity 1: The Springboard
Have you gone to Laoag, Ilocos Sur? Ilocos Norte?
Have you seen sand dunes?
Let us learn one of the many kinds of sand dunes which is the
longitudinal dunes.
Directions: Read the paragraph. Then, answer the questions that follow.

Longitudinal dunes are long low ridges of sand that lie

approximately at right angles to the trend of the sand waves, or parallel to
the direction of the wind. Some of the ridges are almost straight; others
are slightly wavy. They range up to about 10 metres in height and 30
metres in width. Many are more than one and one-half kilometres long.
Both sides of these dunes have practically the same slope and are usually
covered with grass and shrubs. While the crest is usually bare of
vegetation, on some dunes, even the crest is covered. Where this occurs,
it means that wind action has stopped on this particular dune.

3
Comprehension Questions:

1. What is talked about in the paragraph?

___________________________________________________________________ .
2. Describe the ridges.
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________ .

3. What is the implication when sand dunes occur?

___________________________________________________________________ .

Great that you have learned about sand dunes. In the next preceding
part, you will be learning rules on subject – verb agreement.

Activity 2: The Equation

Directions. Read the line lifted from the paragraph. Label it following the
A=B+C. Then, answer the questions that follow.

Longitudinal dunes are long low ridges of sand that lie approximately
at right angles to the trend of the sand waves, or parallel to the direction of
the wind.
A. Answer the following:
1. What is the concept word?
_________________________________________________________________________ .
2. To what genus or class does the defined word belong?
_________________________________________________________________________ .
3. What is/are its distinguishing feature/s?
_________________________________________________________________________ .

4
Reread the line lifted from the paragraph then focus on the highlighted part.

Longitudinal dunes are long low ridges of sand that lie approximately
at right angles to the trend of the sand waves, or parallel to the direction of
the wind.

Let us focus on the subject-verb relationship.

B. Answer the following:

1. What is the subject?

____________________________________________________________________ .
2. What is the number of the subject?
____________________________________________________________________ .
3. Why is “are” used as the verb?
____________________________________________________________________ .
4. Does it observe correct grammar?
____________________________________________________________________ .

Longitudal dunes is plural in number; hence, base form of the verb be is

used. And that is what you are going to focus in this module. So, yes, the
above-lifted definition observes correct subject-verb agreement.

Let us discuss further the rules on subject-verb agreement.

Basic Principle: Singular subjects need S- form of the verb, others call
it singular verb; plural subjects need base form of the verb or what we
commonly call plural verbs.

Example 1:

A forsythia is a flowering shrub with

yellow bell-shaped blossoms.

https://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-cut-
forsythia-flowers

5
Example 2:

Axes are the "x" and "y" lines that cross

at right angles to make a graph.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/axes.ht
ml

Example 3:
A glossary is a list of words or
phrases used in a particular field with their
definitions.

https://images.app.goo.gl/aBbhiAvrH9GGwWfj9

In example number 1, the subject, forsythia, is singular. According to

the general rule, a singular subject takes S-form of the verb or singular verb
hence the use of is.

In example 2, the subject is axes. The subject is plural in number.

According to the general principle, plural subjects take base form of the verb.
Hence, the verb used is base form of be verb which is are.

The subject in example number 3 is glossary. Glossary is singular in

number. So, the verb to be used is S-form of the verb or singular verb. Hence,
it uses the verb is.
Now, how do we form S-form of the verb?

1. S-form of the verb is formed by adding -s to the base form of the verb.
Base Form S- form
Run Runs
Cook Cooks

2. S-form of the verb is formed by adding -es to the base form of the
verb ending in vowels.
Base Form S- form
Go Goes
Do Does

6
3. S-form of the verb is formed by adding -es to the base form of the
verb ending in ss, sh, (t)ch, zz, and x:

Base Form S- form

Miss Misses
Push Push es

4. S-form of the verb is formed by dropping -y change it to i then add -

es.
Base Form S- form
Fly Flies
Carry Carries

Note:
Words that ends in -y preceded by a vowel do not follow rule number 4.

Base Form S- form

Buy Buys
Spray Sprays

Rule 1: WHEN THE SUBJECTS ARE JOINED BY “AND”

Subjects joined by “and” take plural verbs.
Example 1:
The umbra, penumbra and antumbra are parts of a shadow created
by any light source.
Subjects joined by “and” are generally plural in number. The compound
subjects in our examples are umbra, penumbra, antumbra and they are
joined by and. According to Rule 1, subjects joined by and take the base
form of the verb. The three subjects in the definition sentence are joined by
and. The subjects are plural in number hence take base form of the be verb,
are.
Rule 2: WHEN TWO SUBJECTS REFER TO THE SAME THING
Subjects joined by and but refer to the same thing, take S-form of the verb or
singular verb.

7
A block and tackle is a compound pulley where
several pulleys are mounted on each axle, further
increasing the mechanical advantage.

https://images.app.goo.gl/5Nkztrn6x1
KzpAxu6

Rule number 2 is an exception to Rule 1. Compound subjects joined by

“and” but refer to the same thing is singular in number. The subjects block
and tale are joined by and. Yet it means the same thing, hence singular in
number. Therefore, the verb to be used is S-form or singular verb. That is
why, in our example, the verb is singular.
Rule 3: WHEN SINGULAR SUBJECTS ARE JOINED BY “OR”
Compound subjects joined by or takes S-form of the
verb or singular verb.
Example 1:

Variable resistor or Rheostat is an electrical

resistor, with two terminals, whose resistance are
continuously variable by moving a knob or slider and
correspondingly decrease or increase the current
flowing.

https://images.app.goo.gl/EgxGQgscQa3Cjw3Q6
The compound subjects in Example 1 are joined
by or. The subjects variable resistor and rheostat are
joined by or. It is singular in number. Therefore, S-form of the verb or singular
verb is used.

Example 2:

Intensive Pronoun or Reflexive Pronoun is a pronoun ending in -self,

myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves. It often
names the receiver of an action
In example 2, the subjects Intensive Pronoun and Reflexive Pronoun
are joined by or. Rule 3 says the subjects joined by or are taken as singular.
Therefore, the verb used is S-form of be verb, is.

Rule 4: WHEN WORDS END IN -S

Subjects that end in -s and appear to be plural but are really singular,
require S-form of the verbs.

8
Example 1:
Measles is a highly contagious illness caused by a virus that replicates
in the nose and throat of an infected child or adult.
Example 2:
Calculus is the branch of mathematics that deals with the finding and
properties of derivatives and integrals of functions, by methods originally
based on the summation of infinitesimal differences.
Measles and calculus end with -s. They are plural in form but singular
in meaning. Rule 4 says words plural in form but singular in meaning takes
S-form of the verb. Hence, S-form of the be verb is used in both definitions.

Rule 5: WHEN A COLLECTIVE NOUN IS USED

When regarded as a unit, collective nouns, as well as noun phrases denoting
quantity, take singular verbs.

Family is a basic social unit consisting of people who are related to each
other by blood, love or trust.
Family is a collective noun regarded as a single unit. It is singular in
number for it does not indicate many units in the family. Hence, S-form of
the verb or singular verb is used.

How do you identify it is taken as a single unit? The key question is

whether what is referred is the group itself. If it rather talks about the
individual members of the group, then it denotes plurality.

Let Us Practice

Now that you have learned the lesson, let us see if you could already
apply the concepts.

Activity 3: The Lens
