Patients require access to key medical and healthcare services, which can only be provided by a

hospital as part of a comprehensive healthcare system. The delivery of high-quality medical

treatment to patients is accomplished via the coordinated efforts of several departments, staff
members, and other hospital operations. This multi-step process can be thought of as a complicated
system. In this post, we will take a comprehensive look at the operation of a hospital as well as the
many different aspects that contribute to its efficient functioning.

The students from HAHM went to the SMGS hospital in Jammu on February 13th, 2023 for a field
trip. On May 6, 1940, His Highness Maharaja Hari Singh officially opened the SMGS (Sri Maharaja
Gulab Singh) Hospital with the intention of providing Jammu's residents with appropriate and
superior medical attention. The Maharaja constructed two hospitals: one in Jammu at a cost of eight
lakh Indian Rupees, and another in Srinagar at a cost of thirty-five lakh Indian Rupees. After that, the
two institutions took on the name of Sadar Hospital. Lord Vewel, Viceroy of India, was responsible
for the official opening of the Sri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital. Medical Officers were selected
among candidates located in other states for the position. Following the founding of the
Government Medical College in Jammu, this hospital became affiliated with the GMC for the
purposes of teaching.

The SMGS Hospital has a bed strength of 750, and it is home to the following departments and
services:

• Obstetrics and Gynecology

• Pediatrics

• Otolaryngology and Rhinology

• Dermatology

The SMGS hospital dates back to the time of the British occupation, and it looks as good as new
today. In spite of the fact that there has been a rise in demand for the hospital's number of beds, a
new building has been built up alongside the existing structure, and the hospital also has plans to
construct a new wing in the near future.

The SMGS Hospital has undergone expansion to accommodate additional beds. The intensive care
unit for newborns (neonatal ICU) along with capabilities for microscopic surgery and a phototherapy
unit have been established. At SMGS Hospital, on average, 533 patients per day visit the various
outpatient departments (OPDs), 86 patients are admitted each day, 50 major and minor operations
are carried out each day, approximately 10 electrocardiograms, 65 ultrasounds, and X-rays are
performed each day, and approximately 600 tests (pathology, biochemistry, and microbiology) are
performed each day in the various labs.
The first thing that happens when a patient arrives at a hospital is that they go through the
admissions procedure. Patients who are in need of medical care and treatment are admitted to the
hospital through the front desk, where they can get these services. Patients are required to supply
information on their personal circumstances, medical history, and any other pertinent information
throughout the registration procedure. After that, the information is recorded into the database that
the hospital uses, and the medical staff uses it to give the patient with the highest level of treatment
that is reasonably feasible.

The following phase, which occurs after the patient has been hospitalised, is the diagnostic. When
making a diagnosis, it is necessary to perform a number of different tests and checkups on the
patient in order to ascertain the type and severity of their health issues. Tests such as blood tests,
imaging tests, biopsy procedures, and other diagnostic procedures could fall under this category.
After the results of these tests have been analysed, a medical professional will choose the most
appropriate method of care to administer to the patient.

The provision of medical care is at the heart of a hospital's daily operations. Following the diagnosis,
the medical practitioner will choose the most appropriate method of treatment, which may include
prescription drugs, surgical intervention, or physical therapy. The therapy is administered by a group
of medical experts, such as physicians, registered nurses, and other specialists, who collaborate in
order to give the patient with the highest level of care that is humanly feasible.

In addition to providing medical care, hospitals often provide patients with a range of other services,
such as rehabilitation, physical therapy, and nutritional counselling. These programmes are intended
to assist individuals in recovering from the health issues they are experiencing and improving their
overall quality of life. Patients may benefit from rehabilitation in the form of exercises and therapy
sessions, for instance, which help them restore their strength and mobility. When it comes to
helping patients recover from injuries and ailments such as back pain, arthritis, and stroke, physical
therapy, on the other hand, may entail the utilisation of specialised equipment and treatment
methods.

The nursing department of a hospital is consistently ranked as one of the most significant
departments there. Patients are expected to get care around the clock from registered nurses, who
are also responsible for monitoring their health, dispensing prescriptions, and assisting with other
activities of daily living. Additionally, nurses play a significant part in the communication that takes
place between patients and physicians. They are responsible for ensuring that the patient's
requirements and concerns are taken into consideration. In addition, nurses are accountable for
maintaining treatment and condition records of patients in a manner that is both accurate and up-
to-date. These data are utilised by physicians and other medical professionals in order to give the
patient with the highest possible level of care.

The laboratory is yet another significant department that may be found in a hospital. The laboratory
is in charge of carrying out a variety of tests and exams, such as blood tests and imaging tests, and
interpreting the results of such tests and examinations. In addition, the laboratory plays an essential
part by giving findings that are precise and up to date, which are then utilised by medical
professionals in the process of diagnosing and treating patients. The personnel in the laboratory
collaborate closely with other medical experts to ensure that the test findings of the patient are
appropriately read and that those results are used to give the patient with the highest possible level
of care.

A hospital's pharmacy is responsible for the distribution of pharmaceuticals as well as the provision
of information on their appropriate usage and any adverse effects. It is the responsibility of the
pharmacist, in collaboration with the patient's attending physician, to ensure that the patient
receives the appropriate drug at the appropriate time and in the appropriate amount. In addition,
pharmacists play a significant role in determining how well a patient responds to a prescribed
prescription and ensuring that the medication is administered appropriately.

Hospitals also contain administrative departments such as finance and human resources, both of
which are essential to the hospital's operation and play an important part in the hospital's overall
success. The department of finance is in charge of handling the hospital's finances, which includes
billing and collections, while the department of human resources is in charge of hiring new staff
members, providing them with training, and managing employee relations. Both the hospital's
finance and human resources divisions collaborate to ensure that the institution have the necessary
resources.

OPINIONS:

The hospital lacked cleanliness, was overcrowded, and did not have an enough number of medical
professionals to deliver high-quality care. Because there was no ventilation in the emergency room,
the conditions there were suffocating and the number of patients was excessive. There was not a
suitable facility for the attendants to reside in throughout their shift. There was insufficient parking
available for the maximum number of guests. Although there were signs posted within the building,
none were posted on the building's outside.
