THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Class-IV
1. What is the solar system? Name the smallest and largest planet.
Ans: The family of the sun, eight planets and their moons together form the solar system.
2. Name the eight planets of the solar system in order from the sun.
Ans: The eight planets in order from the sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus
and Neptune.
Ans: The Earth is a unique planet because it is the only planet where life is known to exist. Also, it is
the only planet known to have air and water.
4. What is the Earth’s natural satellite called? How long does it take to move around the earth
once?
Ans: The Earth’s natural satellite is called the Moon. It takes around 29 to 30 days for the moon to
move around the earth once.
Ans: Stars are huge balls of fire and light. They appear very small because they are far away from the
Earth.
6. What is rotation? With the help of a diagram explain what causes day and night?
Ans: The spinning movement of the earth on its own axis is called rotation. It takes 24 hours for the
earth to rotate once on its axis. It is the rotation of the earth that causes day and night.
7. What is revolution? With the help of a diagram, show how it is summer in one half of the
earth and winter in the other half?
Ans: The movement of the earth around the sun in its own orbit is called revolution. It takes almost
365 days for the earth to revolve once around the sun. Revolution of the earth causes changes in
seasons.
II. Define the following:
1) Planet – A planet is an object that moves around the sun in a fixed path.
2) Orbit – The fixed path in which planets revolve around the sun is called an orbit.
4) Constellation – The patterns formed in the sky by a group of stars is called constellation.
5) Axis – An imaginary line that runs from the North part of the Earth to the South is called an
axis.
