Particular attention shall be paid to the characteristics and state of the roads and to the
duration of transportation. The means shall not be loaded beyond their capacity and the
load shall remain within the limits of the trailer or within allowable legal limits.
The use of means having pipe supports either on the tractor or on the trailer is permitted,
provided that the-supports are installed on rotating platforms.
Furthermore, it shall be necessary to verify that the roads do not present steep slopes,
narrow curves and deep holes. For brief journeys only saddle supports must be used at
least on the loading surface (see section. 5.3.2). This rule can also be applied for long
journeys if it is considered convenient.

5.5.1.2 Rules and prescriptions for transportation

The rules and prescriptions for handling, loading and stockpiling of pipes on transportation
means are indicated below.
a) The removal of pipes from stockpiles shall be performed in a safe manner and in
accordance with the procedures.

arms (cranes, etc), fitted with slings and suitable hooks.
The arms and the hooks, to be fixed at the ends of the pipes, shall have a rubber or
copper protection to avoid damages to the bevels of the pipes and to the
internal/external coatings.
The slings shall be provided with lateral ropes for guiding the pipes, when suspended.
c) Remainders of sheets or cushions used to separate the layers of pipes (coated pipes)
and still attached to the coating shall not be detached (unless check of. the coating is
required); only the parts which do not adhere to the coating shall be removed.
d) The entire surface of the means shall be free from foreign bodies (bolts, nails, etc.) or
other irregularities that could hinder the correct positioning and levelling of the saddle
supports (see Section 5.3.2).
The edges and all the sides of the means must not present bumps or irregularities of
any kind; in addition they shall be padded with hard rubber or similar material.
e) Except for particular cases, the saddle support shall be arranged and fixed to the means
of transport.
The length of the saddle supports must be more or less equal to the width of the trailer.
The spacing of the end supports from the pipe ends must be at least 1.00 m.
f) For the road transportation of pipes having a very rough and anti-skid surface, external
protection mats can be used instead of the rubber strips. The mats consist of resistant
synthetic resin lines with soft incorruptible material.
The thickness of these mats shall be at least 40 mm and their length and width at least
30 mm greater than the dimensions of the supports.
The mats shall just be placed and not fixed to the support, as long as they are centred
on to the supports and remain in position during loading operations.
g) The load shall be secured on the transport means in at least two suitably & paced
positions. It is advisable to use tapes of synthetic fibres or plastified metallic tapes (the
latter is not advisable for railway transportation).
The use of ropes is only permitted for land transportation, while the use of chains is
always prohibited. Double mats or rubber strips shall be placed under the tapes or
ropes.
Should the pipes hang outside the means by more than 1 m all the extending length
shall be tied using tapes as described above and following the same modalities.
h) The Contractor must establish the number of pipes to be placed for the first layer and
the total number of pipes that can be loaded and the characteristics of the transportation
means (width, bearing capacity, max. allowable loading, height, etc.).
It shall be the Contractor’s duty to submit to the Company for approval the maximum
number of stackable layers for each loading and the characteristics of transportation
means utilised.
i) For the characteristics of supports, their min width and spacing and the max number of
layers for what concerns the loading of bare pipes, corrosion coated pipes with and
without anodes and concrete coated pipes after curing, reference is made to the
relevant sections of chapter 5.3.
