4. RESPONSIBILITIES
4.1 GENERAL
Contractor shall be responsible for the overall execution of the works.
In particular, the responsibility of Contractor concerns:
− Handling, transportation, storage and stockpiling of bare, corrosion coated and
overweighted pipes at pipe mills, coating yards, logistic bases and on land/sea
transportation means.
− Procurement of the necessary instrumentation and equipment, as well as consumable
and suitably qualified and experienced personnel to ensure the execution of the work to
comply with the technical specifications.
− Mobilisation of suitable means for pipes transportation.
− Preparation of the technical reports and procedures.
4.3 HSE
It is Contractor’s duty to observe the local and international regulations on health, safety
and environmental as applicable to his work.
5. REQUIREMENTS
5.1 ENGINEERING
Contractor shall carry out all the necessary engineering in relation with the handling,
transportation, storage and stockpiling of bare, corrosion coated and overweighted pipes, in
compliance with the applicable Contractual Documents, codes, standards and regulations.
Contractor shall demonstrate with appropriate calculations that all bare and coated pipes
shall be handled, loaded unloaded, transported, stored and stockpiled avoiding any
mechanical damages to the pipe walls, bevelled pipe ends, overweight and external
coating.
After Contract award, Contractor shall submit for Company's approval the detailed
procedure he intends to use for handling, transportation, storage and stockpiling of pipes.
The procedure proposed by Contractor shall be in accordance with the requirements of this
specification.
5.2 HANDLING
Pipe handling operations shall be performed using lifting equipment provided with fixed or
mobile arms (cranes, etc.), spread bars slings and suitable hooks. The arms and hooks to
be fixed at the ends of the pipe shall be provided with rubber protection, copper protection
or other soft metals to avoid any damage to the bevels and to the internal/external coating
of the pipes.
The slings shall be provided with lateral ropes to guide the pipes when suspended.
If end caps or/and bevel protections have been removed, they shall be replaced.
During handling operations, the pipes shall not be bumped or scraped against obstacles or
other pipes; the pipes shall be placed on other pipes taking the maximum care and
attention.
Slings and hooks shall not be bumped against the pipes.
The use of ropes and chains is prohibited.
All lifting equipment, including cranes, spread bars, slings, hooks etc., shall be certified
according to accepted standards.
If required by Company, all pipeline shall be internally cleaned before load-out using
appropriate tools as brushes, swabs, air hose, etc.
Upon completion of the cleaning operation, all pipe joints shall be examined internally over
their entire length, from each end of the joint.
soft wood, with no bolts or other irregularities. The use of saddles made of different material
(i.e. synthetic resin) may be accepted only if approved by the Company.
The minimum height of the saddles shall not be less than 10 cm and, in any case, shall be
much higher than the highest edge of the loading surface.
All saddle supports, used on the transport means, shall have the same height for a uniform
distribution of the load. The radius of the saddles shall be approximately the same as that
of the pipe to guarantee correct positioning and pipe/saddle contact over a circumference of
at least 45°.
All the parts in contact with the pipes, including flat parts on either side, shall be padded
with hard and smooth rubber strips at least 5 mm thick.
5.4.2 Stockpiles
The pipes shall be stockpiled in groups having the same characteristics.
Strength characteristics of the concrete shall be according to Contractual Specification.
To facilitate stockpiling operations Contractor shall propose a stockpiles marking system.
Data Sheet as reported in Section 7. shall be filled by Contractor prior to commencing the
work.
Contractor shall perform calculations and determine the maximum number of layers, and
shall submit then to the Company for approval. These data shall be collected in Data Sheet
of Section 7.
5.5.1.1 General
The pipes to be transported over land shall be loaded and stored according to the following
prescriptions and the API RP 5L 1 code.
Should the laws and official rules in the concerned countries be more restrictive, they shall
be fully observed.

Particular attention shall be paid to the characteristics and state of the roads and to the
duration of transportation. The means shall not be loaded beyond their capacity and the
load shall remain within the limits of the trailer or within allowable legal limits.
The use of means having pipe supports either on the tractor or on the trailer is permitted,
provided that the-supports are installed on rotating platforms.
Furthermore, it shall be necessary to verify that the roads do not present steep slopes,
narrow curves and deep holes. For brief journeys only saddle supports must be used at
least on the loading surface (see section. 5.3.2). This rule can also be applied for long
journeys if it is considered convenient.
5.5.2.1 General
For sea transportation the pipes shall be stacked under deck. The shipment of pipes on
floating units shall follow the Marine Codes, Insurance Contracts, Laws, Regulations and
the API RP 5L 5 code.
The height of the stacks shall be calculated to avoid damages to the coatings and anodes.
However, the height of the stacks shall permit perfect visibility and manoeuvrability of the
vessel and shall permit easy handling, taking into consideration dynamic amplification of
loads due to the vessels.
Contractor shall prepare a shipping plan covering all activities required to transport the
pipes from the pipe mill to the harbour indicated in the order, as well as from the harbour to
the yard and from the yard to the lay barge; the characteristics of various equipment and
means required to perform the work shall be considered in the shipping plan.
a) The surfaces of the ships on which the pipes are stacked shall be suitably levelled using
soft wood boards. The dimensions and shape of the boards shall be defined according
to the needs.
b) During loading into floating units, Contractor shall inspect for damage each coated joint
of the pipe that he receives. The check and repair will be in accordance with relevant
specification. Loading from and/or to floating units shall be done in accordance with API
RP 5L 5 code as applicable, and in all cases in accordance with a procedure to be
submitted to the Company for approval.
c) The methods for securing and protecting the pipes from damages during transportation
shall be established by the Contractor.
d) It is absolutely prohibited to load and unload the cargo by dropping or rolling it onto
guides.
The use of ropes, cables or chains placed round the pipes is also prohibited.
e) Any damage suffered during handling for loading and unloading, transportation and
stockpiling shall be repaired in accordance with relevant specifications at the
Contractor's expenses.
f) In case of stacking on deck suitable measures shall be taken to protect the
interior/exterior of pipes from seawater sprays.

6. DOCUMENTATION
6.1 GENERAL
Before and on completion of the works, Contractor shall deliver to the Company bound
copies of all documents, maps, computer print-outs and field notes produced or developed
during the work execution.
These documents shall be produced within a time frame as agreed during the initial award
negotiations.
