LESSON PLAN SCIENCE 6

I. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the grade 6 pupils are expected to:
1. Identify and measure the length of various objects.
2. Explain why we need a standard measurement unit (and discuss problems with
using nonstandard measurement units).
3. Do measuring things.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Measure the length of various objects.

Materials: Ruler, measuring tape, Power Point Presentation, and Picture
III. PROCEDURE
A. Routine Activities
1. Opening Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Attendance
B. Motivation
Instructions: Begin by asking the class to write down as many things as they can think
of that they 'measure' or things that require 'measurement.'
For example: Their clothes come in different sizes, their weight, their height, the speed
of a car, or ingredients for cooking.
Compile a list of all of the things they measure or things that require measurement on
the board.
If it hasn't been added, place 'length' on the list. Circle all of the measurements that
could be considered a measurement of length.
C. Discussion
The teacher will be discussed the definition of measurement and some examples of it.
Also the definition of nonstandard units.
Measurement is the process of obtaining the magnitude of a quantity relative to an
agreed standard. The science of weights and measures is called metrology.
Measurement is a system to measure the height, weight, capacity or even amount of
certain objects. We can measure how long things are or how tall or how far two things
are.
For example: The height of Oliver is 100 inches and the height of the giraffe is 150
inches.
What Is a Measuring Unit?
A standard quantity used to express a physical quantity is known as a measuring unit.
For example, we use inches, i.e., “in” to measure the length of small objects like pencil,
pen or matchstick.
Units are the tools to measure and compare different things. Comparison becomes
easy when all the units for the measurement are the same. Different units can be
classified depending on their use.
Nonstandard measurements, on the other hand, are much more informal and often will
lack the precision, and accuracy, of the measurements done using a standard tool.
Nonstandard measurements are usually applied when a measurement is needed, but a
measuring tool is not easily accessible.
A few examples that someone may use as nonstandard measurements would be:
-using steps to determine a length
-estimating a distance using car lengths
-comparing a length to a body part, such as a finger or an arm
D. Generalization
What is the measurement and give the example of it?
What is the nonstandard units?
What can use to measure the nonstandard units?
E. Application
Activity 1: Nonstandard Units
Allow teams of students to select what they want their 'nonstandard' units to be (i.e.
pencils, printer paper, etc.).
Tell students they are going to perform several length measurements with their
measurement tool. Have students create a table (example below) before they start.

IV. EVALUATION
Directions: Answer the following questions.
1. What is the measurement and give the example of it?
2. What is the nonstandard units?
3. What can use to measure the nonstandard units?
4. Give the examples to be measured of nonstandard units?
5. Measuring things are important? Yes or no. Why?
V. ASSIGNMENT
Directions: Create a video presentation to do measuring things. Table, Door, Book, Window and
Pencil.
