DIDACTIC SEQUENCE

TITLE OF THE DIDACTIC SEQUENCE: Talking about my last vacation

Purpose of the subject: To be able to use the Past simple question and negative forms.

Module’s number: 1

Module Purpose: at the end of the unit, the student will be able to express situations that
happened in the past or activities that he/ she used to do.

Learning’s description: To provide Ss with controlled and semi-controlled practice in


speaking, listening and freer practice in writing in the context of reporting about past events
using the past simple in questions and negative forms.

Contents:
Simple past (aux. Did)

Estimated class time: 2 hours

START PHASE

Activity: Who and where?


Purpose of the activity: Introduce Ss to the topic, set context
Description of the activity:
The teacher writes this question on the board
Where did you go last vacation?

Elicit some Ss to answer the questions


Writes the Ss’ names on the board and the place he / she visited last vacation

Activity: Where did you go last vacation?


Purpose of the activity: Make Ss infer grammar from sample sentences, To introduce the
past simple in the context of vacation
Description of the activity:
The teacher writes sample sentences in simple past from the previous activity.
Evaluation: Ss work in groups to share their ideas (sentences) about the places they visited
last vacation

Activity: What did you do in your last vacation?


Purpose of the activity:
To elicit the function of talking about past events using the past simple
To elicit the form of verbs in the past simple (regular and irregular)
Evaluation: Get students write sentences by using the simple past pattern.

DEVELOPMENTAL PHASE

Activity: How was your trip? (video)


Purpose of the activity: To provide listening practice (for specific information)
Get the students identify different expressions in simple past
Description of the activity:
Ss Unscramble the sentences according to the sentences they identify on the video How was

Get the missing sentences to complete the format given
Answer the exercises from the attachments
Evaluation: Get the students share the correct sentences from the video

Activity:
Purpose of the activity: To focus Ss’ attention on the simple past pattern for affirmative,
negative and interrogative sentences
Description of the activity:
The teacher divides the board in 3 columns: Affirmative negative and interrogative
Places the correct unscrambled sentences in the right column
Evaluation: Students identify simple past sentences pattern

Activity:
Purpose of the activity: To provide Ss with practice in transforming affirmative sentences in
the past simple into negative sentences and questions.
Description of the activity:
Students write questions in simple past and rewrite sentences in negative form
Evaluation: students correct anwers

POST ACTIVE PHASE (Evaluation and feedback)

Activity: Traveling around the world.


Purpose of the activity: To provide Ss with freer practice in writing about past events using
the past simple
Description of the activity:
You are on a trip around the world. Write an e-mail to a friend or your family about your trip.
What country/places did you visit? What did you see? What did you do? How was it? Where
are you now? and ask to a partner about his/ her trip
Evaluation: Get the students write a paragraph about his/ her trip

Marie: Well, hello, Dr. Anderson! Welcome Back.

Dr. Anderson: Thank you very much.

Marie: How was your trip to London?

Dr. Anderson: It was fine thank you.

Marie: Did you visit lots of museums?

Dr. Anderson: No. I didn’t visit any.

Marie: Did you eat in some good restaurants?

Dr. Anderson: No. I ate in the same bad restaurant everyday.

Marie: Did you see any plays or concerts?

Dr. Anderson: No, but I watched TV in the Hotel room at night.

Marie: Did you take some nice walks around London?

Dr. Anderson: Actually, no. I sat in a chair for four days.

Marie: Dr. Anderson, that doesn’t sound like a very nice vacation.

Dr. Anderson: Vacation? I went to London for business, not for vacation. I met doctors from all over the world.

We talked about new medicines and I gave two speeches. I always ate at the hotel restaurant. So

I actually never left the hotel.

Marie: But, Dr. Anderson, you were in London and you didn’t see the city.

Dr. Anderson: No. But it looked nice from the airplane.
