Matatag ka: A Study of Resiliency of The Marginalized Sectors and How Social
Intelligence and Covid Anxiety Shapes it.
METHODS
Research Design
The researcher will be using predictive-correlation that will focus on multiple regression.
Resiliency will be the dependent variable and social intelligence and covid anxiety as
predictor variables.
The analysis was hypothesized to be statistically significant and that social intelligence
and covid anxiety are good determinants of resiliency as will be reflected by the F and p
value
This study is quantitative in nature in that the researchers only used scales as tools and
are concerned with the statistical data only. This research design fitted the way data was
analyzed and the way the study was conducted, to ascertain the relationship of the
variables and probable predictor variables.
Participants
The participants of this study are the Marginalized Sectors specifically the members of
the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
138 participants will be in this study.
The number of participants were computed using the statistical software GPower version
3.1.9.2.
The participants will be gathered through the use of purposive sampling.
The participants of the study were chosen based on the criteria in accordance with the
purpose of the study. These are: a. Marginalized Sectors c. Member of the 4Ps c. must be
at least 18-60 years old d. Filipino e. Residing here in Pampanga. If any of these criteria
is not met, the person would not be considered as respondent.
Research Instruments
Tromso Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS)
TSIS was developed by David H. Silvera, Monica Martinussen and Tove I. Dahl.
The researchers used a scale Social Intelligence, to measure participants’ ability to be
street smart.
It is made up of 21 items to measure three factors of Social Intelligence: Social
Information Processing, Social Skills, and Social Awareness.
TSIS was then used a sample for 290 students (182 female and 102 male) at the
University of Tromso, Norway.
The mean of participants is 24.73 with a standard deviation of 5.83. The internal
reliability of three factors was evaluated using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient.
The SP is .79, SS is .85 and SA is .72.
Procedures
The researcher will go to the DSWD Regional Office in San Fernando, Pampanga to
request for the data of the 4P’s members.
The researcher will also go to the barangay where the participants are residing to ask for
assistance to gather data.
The researcher will also request if the barangay is feasible for them to distribute the
questionnaires.
Informed consents will be given to the participants of the study before answering the
questionnaires. After the agreement on when and where is the most convenient for them,
survey and interview will be conducted.
The answers will be kept confidentially to ensure the safety of the participants.
The researcher will first give assurance of anonymity to the participants before
administering the questionnaires.
Then, each of the participants will be given instructions on what he/she would answer on
the questionnaire and how the questionnaires are supposed to be answered.
Data Analysis
The researcher will use multiple regression to determine the predictive capacity of the
predicted variables (i.e., social intelligence and/or covid anxiety) with the criterion
variable (i.e., resiliency)
Data and information will be encoded using Microsoft Excel 2013 and will be computed
using statistical manual package SPSS V.23 and perform the needed operations.
Ethical Considerations
To make sure that the present study is carried out ethically, the following ethical
considerations are as follows:
Only copyrighted instruments will be used by the researcher. This means that the
researcher will ask permission to the author to use the instruments through sending an e-
mail.
Only copyrighted instruments will be used by the researcher. This means that the
researcher will reach out to the author to ask permission and use the instruments through
sending an e-mail.
Before the answering the research instruments, the researcher will make sure that
Participant Data Sheet will be filled out.
The protection of both the participants and researcher will be assured by asking the
participants to sign informed consent.
The informed-consent form will be discussed thoroughly to the participants. It consists of
the purpose of the study, procedures, risks and benefits of participating in the study.
The participants will also be informed that should they find that the questions are not
favorably answered, they have the right to choose not to participate or to withdraw from
participating.
Should problems arise as a consequence of their participation, rest assured that
psychological assistance and debriefing will be provided to address the participant’s
concern.
No cash will be given to the respondents. However, a token will be given to them.
Please take note that all information collected for this study will treated with strictest
confidence.
