Act.1: Introduction to the 21st Century Literacies

Name: GRACE MAE G. MABONG Course: BSEd-Science

1. Compare and contrast the traditional concept of literacy to the modern view of literacy.

- The difference between traditional concept of literacy and modern view of literacy is
that, traditional literacy education focused in teaching reading comprehension, writing
and effective communication. It is the ability to read and write or the ability to use
language-to read, write, listen, speak and spelling. Its method emphasizes that the
teacher must teach sounds and letters in isolation, then from words and sentences, and
finally read a book. The learners recognize the word then pronounce it when
accompanied or not accompanied by pictures. While, modern view of literacy is a
modern form of communication, collaboration and research shift increasingly to digital
formats, digital literacy has become an important facet of overall literacy education. In
this concept, teaching is to cause the pupil to learn and acquire the desired knowledge,
skills and also desirable ways of living in the society. In this process, learner, teacher,
curriculum and other variables are organized in a systematic and psychological ways to
attain some pre-determine goals. In modern education systems, students learn through
human-environment interaction. Its purpose is to empower students with the
knowledge and train them for life and can also contribute positively towards social
betterment.

2. Describe the changes in the 21st century that have led to the rise of new literacies.

- Education in the 21st century has been modernized. Students and teachers can
communicate directly no matter the distance is. Students are intelligent, independent
and extremely capable. We can say that they are skilled with technology and
comfortable with global and intercultural communication. And also they can show their
talents freely.
- 21st century education is giving the students the skills they need to succeed. And these
skills focus more on making sense of that information, sharing and using it in smart
ways. In this case, teachers need to serve as a guide or mentor for their students, not as
the all-knowing sage providing them with all their information. The digital education
helps teachers and students to learn conveniently and being resourceful. It will give
them the ability to think critically and creatively, collaborate with others, and to
communicate clearly sets students up for success in their careers, but also empowers
them to live happier, healthier lives.
3. With a partner of a triad, brainstorm and answer this question: What teaching strategies
and forms of assessment could you use to help develop functional literacy?

- For me, example of teaching strategies that could use to help develop functional literacy
is inquiry based learning. With this strategy, through asking questions, they can activate
their HOTS or Higher Order Thinking Skills that can be beneficiary to them. They can also
use their critical thinking skills and help them to be literate learners.
- Let’s just say that students have a natural desire to learn and that by doing so, they are
able to have their curiosity satisfied or given justice through the process of exploration.
Since they can choose what they want to learn, students can benefit from inquiry based
learning. One of the best skills you’ll ever cultivate is teaching kids how to satiate their
curiosity through exploration. In inquiry-based learning, both students and teachers can
communicate in an interactive manner; I believe this one of the best teaching strategies
for developing a good rapport between both parties. Teachers and students can both
share their ideas in class by asking questions.
