Interactive Assignment: The Internet, TCP/IP, & DNS

See the attached screen shot of the results from Task 2 for week 2 lab 2. You
can see that by using the command line prompt we can display the local
area connections available on PLABWIN701.

For the Interactive Assignment, you have the task to:

Describe the TCP/IP Command Line tool.

Stallings and Case (2103) state,

“A protocol is used for communication between entities in different systems.”
The basic communication language of the internet is known as TCP/IP. The
TCP/IP protocols are made up of two halves, transmission control protocol
(TCP) & internet protocol (IP).
This type of tool is used for configuring and testing connections. Specifically,
internet and local area network (LAN) connections.

Identify the benefits in using the TCP/IP Command Line tool.

The TCP/IP Command Line tool is a way for us to enter direct prompts into
our computers so that we can view how information is being transported
(sent and received). The TCP/IP protocols allows for interoperability between
all networks and the internet. Detailed benefits to TCP/IP are:
-TCP/IP supports multiple routing protocols
-You can establish connections between different types of computers
using TPC/IP
-TCP/IP is independent of the operating system

Describe the roles of TCP/IP in Internet communications.

TCP, the first half of this protocol, is responsible for how information moves
across networks. This means that the transmission control protocol
determines how packets of information are formed, then how those packets
are routed, and finally actually transmits the packets to different devices on
the network. Internet Protocol, the second half of this protocol, is responsible
for where the assembled packets are routed to. This means IP determines
where the packetized data originated (the source) and where the packetized
data is to be delivered (the destination). This even includes checking that
the data is delivered correctly, this is known as an error control mechanism.

Identify the differences between the TCP & the IP? Why are TCP/IP and DNS
important component to the way the Internet works?

Essentially, the main difference between these protocols is what they do. IP
can only obtain the address or location that the data is to be directed to.
And TCP insures that the packetized data reaches the destination obtained
by IP. They are symbiotic, closely related and equally essential but not the
same. Just as TCP & IP are essential to one another DNS is essential to
enable the internet to work as we know it. Our lecture this week stated.
“DNS is to content on the Internet as a street address is to the mail carrier
from the U.S. Post Office – it is a location identification system.” Without this
system, it would not be possible for IP to retrieve an address for data packets
to be transmitted to and from. It takes both of these protocols DNS and
TCPI/IP for the internet to be able to function.
