Typical Titration curve for strong acid and strong
base
HCl(aq) + NaOH → NaCl(aq) + H2O
At equivalence point pH will be 7 [H+]] = [OH-]

Known volume
of acid starts in
flask
Equivalence Point vs. End Point
An equivalence point is when the moles of a
standard solution (titrant) equal the moles of a
solution of unknown concentration.
An endpoint is indicated by some form of
indicator at the end of a titration. Today you will
see what an endpoint looks like - and make a
case for which indicator to use for a strong acid,
strong base titration.
Titration - with a burette

Solution of Known
concentration (NaOH 1M)
goes in the burette

50 mL - fill up to 0 at the
top.

Black card to help read?

10.00 mL of our Hydrochloric acid
Volumetric pipet with filler, transfer into a 50 mL Erlenmeyer
flask - add 2 drops either phenolphthalein OR methyl orange.
1st run - use to
figure out what is
going to happen
with the color of
your indicator
2nd
3rd
4th runs
(fresh sample acid
each time)
Try to “stop” at the
same color
change spot each
time; record
volume of NaOH
added each time.
One more thing for us to investigate today.

Use pH probe attachment to find pH of acid at

start, after 5mL of NaOH added; at end pont
(when indicator changes color).
Results: Indicator______ color at start ____ end___

Run Volume NaOH pH start, middle,

added at “end endpoint
point”

What did we learn?

HCl(aq) + NaOH → NaCl(aq) + H2O

At equivalence point pH will be 7 [H+]] = [OH-]
For the strong
acid - strong
base curve,
why doesn’t it
matter that
these indicators
don’t actually
change color
(show the end
point) when the
pH is 7?
But for the weak
acid - strong
base curve,
which indicator
would it be best
to use (which
one changes
color nearest the
equivalence
point)?
Next Tuesday :
Make sure you’ve made notes for chapter 13 and 14.

Tried the rest of the FRQs and the Multiple choice problems.

4 Colloquia presenters - freshen up your talk. Keep it short

and sweet and chemistry focused.

Time to review last exam

Thursday: Exam 3 will be 30 MC 45 mins; 41 mins of FRQ

points 23min + 2(9min)
