PRE-ASSESSMENT
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct modals to complete each sentences.
1. You __________ study hard to pass the test and make it to the top.
4. My sister is _________ coming home late tonight because of the heavy rain.
Read the following. List all the modals that you find in the paragraph. Write your
answer in your activity notebook.
I firmly believe that tourism in Antarctica should not be allowed. To begin with
people will introduce germs and diseases. When people don’t clean their boots they will get
muddy and will pollute the water. When people are sick and they get close to the animals
they will transmit them the diseases contaminating thus the animals. Some pests like flies,
mosquitoes, and ticks may be introduced by tourists. This would undoubtedly affect local
animal life.
Secondly, humans taken to Antarctica might harm the animals there. For instance they
will leave rubbish in animal habitats. They also might scare the animals with their flashy and
noisy equipment. They also might trample penguins breeding areas. You can see what is
happening outside of Antarctica, do we really want that to happen there too?
Thirdly, there are many concerns about pollution in Antarctica. In the Gulf of Mexico
there has been a big oil spill, what if that was to happen in Antarctica? Our poor little
penguins would die. Imagine all the rubbish we leave behind, now imagine the same on ice,
and what Antarctica will look like in approximately 10 years, when careless tourists dump
their rubbish over there. Although tour boats may give people more jobs they are leaving too
much waste wherever they go. Sludge and leftover foods scraps are usually thrown over the
side of boats during tours. So if that is not going to affect Antarctica?
Lastly, people break rules in other continents so why wouldn’t they break rules there?
For instance tourist might want souvenirs so they might go up to the penguin breeding
grounds and take their babies for pets or their eggs as souvenirs. Can we just accept this?

Quick Review!
ADVERB
You probably remember that the underline words are called adverbs they are used to
describe or give more information about verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Unlike other
adverbs these ones are unique because they help express modality and that is why they are
called modal adverbs. The modal adverbs used in the given sentences describe the adjective
and modal verbs or expressions found in each sentence.
In sentence A, the modal adverbs surely describes the modal expression shall win, it
adds the information that without the doubt Josh will win.
The modal adverb willingly in sentence B describes the adjective happy it helps to
express that the students are ready to help Josh.
Furthermore, the modal adverb likely describes the modal expression will vote. It
gives more information that there is a chance that the students will vote Josh.
Modal Adverbs

Are they similar to modal verbs and modal nouns? If yes, how are they similar?
If not, how are they different?
In the given sample sentences, the underlined words are the modal adverbs and
the italicized words are the words they describe. Most of the modal adverbs
describe how something is done and how someone feels about something.
They are similar to modal verbs and modal nouns because they express modality.
However, they differ in form and the way they are used in sentences. Modal
verbs are used to add information to the main verb. On the other hand, modal
nouns name a quality, state, or condition that states modality while modal
adverbs or give more meaning or information to verbs and adjectives.
Noticeably, most modal adverbs have equivalent modal noun forms. Some of the
examples are possibly and possibility, necessarily and necessity, certainly and
certainty, etc.
